The Final 10 minutes of Sunshine Radio 855 kHz Medium Wave from behind the scenes
Dave Porter who originally commissioned the Sunshine 855 MW transmitter in 1992, switches the 500w service off on 19th January 2024.
These was filmed behind the scenes during the final 10 minutes broadcast, before he threw the off switch just after 1pm.
This sad momentous event was witnessed by current Woofferton engineers and the Sunshine Radio team.
Dave (G4OYX) was a senior transmitter engineer at Woofferton Transmitting Station for over 30 years and continues to provide RF technical services to Sunshine & Community Radio services throughout the UK.

Introduction to Woofferton Transmitting Station Part 1
Woofferton will be the new home for Radio DARC broadcasts as of January 2025, this is due to the complete closure of the Moosbrunn ORS transmitting station in Austria after Dec 31 2024.
I was the install tech from Marconi on this exact unit back in 1981 (ish)...and did the handover testing with the BBC guys....
Hi Monty-NSW it's amazing to hear you were part of the installation team for S82. You are most welcome to visit any time to see how your handy work is still in good working order today! Just drop us a message.
Very informative
Digital is rubbish
A bit different than our sloping style Harris, Gates, Wheatstone, McMartin, etc. audio consoles we have here in the states, but, I'm sure just as well engineered.
Oh wow, I remember something very similar to this at BBC Radio Birmingham in the 1970's, not certain if it was exactly the same or the slightly later model, but it certainly takes me back..! We used the lower (fader) section of one of these at BHBN Hospital Radio in the early 80's, but it was replaced with another lovely old desk, the Pye SM8. If anyone has a video of one of those, I'd appreciate knowing about it..! I've always loved the PO 1000 lever keys, used them in a lot of amateur radio kit I built back then as well, but they seem to be rather hard to get hold of these days, sadly.
You used to get VOA on household appliances, it took years to find a workaround allowing UHF television reception (2km from site). Was good to see the sister station on Sao Tome - better beaches there than Teme's Green.
Remember the mast in Greete back in the 1980s. I had heard the station, playing around with a transistor radio and hearing somebody I knew broadcasting. A little later on a walk put two and two together. The silence through my earphones now is pretty powerful.
I want to know where in the Woofferton transmitter they turn off BBC Hereford and Worcester
I would wanna know where they turn off BBC Hereford and Worcester at the Woofferton transmitter and Sunshine Radio from the Villa Farm transmitter.
Very sad and short sighted to take them down with things as they are in the world I can see a need for HF broadcasting but alas the UK has now destroyed all its capabiluty
going off the air with a tiny 500 w signal. I could understand a high power Shortwave 200kw station but not a 500W station
why would a simple AM broadcast station sign off???I can understand a high power shortwave station going off from high electricity costs but not a simple what 5KW...10KW AM sign off??
Very sad . Thank you for sharing
Read the description Einstein, it says it was a 500w service.
th-cam.com/video/xL-QQWcdsMk/w-d-xo.html Happier days..
Interesting that they’re going onto DAB when other stations are coming off multiplexes. The quality is shall we say variable
Usually sounds like an MP3 downloaded from a dodgy Russian web site.
So it’s 2024? As the engineer said and not as per the presenters intro?
Yes it was 2024, Nick is Welsh and they can't drive fast enough there now to keep up with the date, that's why he said 2023!
Just heard David mention Graham (Symonds).........Mr. Whiskey galore! Was a good friend of mine many years ago.
Wow beautiful , I have the BD228A
"Encompass Digital Media" sounds like a big evil corporation from sci-fi.
Nice vid. Quite a different kettle of fish compared to the small 1500W PEP transmitters I used to work with on tankers.
sorry for asking but what is a pen stage?.
"Pen" is a short name for penultimate. It is nothing more than a driver stage for the last stage. Here in the states we will call that stage the Intermediate Power Amplifier or IPA.
Fascinating! Thanks. And thanks to KiwiSDR. 🙂👍
Beautiful! I saw couple of those in use at two local radio stations in England. Thanks.
Something died on that day.
😕
Thanks David. As expected, a very interesting series of videos. It's always interesting to see what Aunty uses - or used - for their RF.
Very interesting thank you for uploading. Cheers.
KiwiSDR, so handy. Great coverage from Wooferton
DRM - Digital Radio Mondiale, which is the digital radio standard for Europe. Its U.S. counterpart is the HD Radio.
Huge mistake by broadcasters in my opinion.
i've watched a few UK videos lately and it seems you can't do anything without a damn hard hat and hi vis jacket. even in some stupid situations. do they wear those in the bedroom too?????
Very sad
Sad to see how an era ends (Medium Wave) it gets every year more quiet.
I'll take the PA! ;)
I ran an analog UHF TV transmitter during college, so I've always loved high power transmitters. Water and high voltage in close proximity - what could go wrong?
know this is a old video, but Ronald Reagan was not President of the US until 1981.
Fascinating stuff... funny to see the 22 mm copper pipe exactly as used in domestic plumbing!
Used the copper pipe as the coax inner and aluminium pipe for the outer viax for high power tranxmitters. When ever the inner and outer touched on full power it melted or gave off a Corona burst
Memories of my days as a trainee engineer at WOF (later moved on to other things), c1986/7. Back then the B6124s kept breaking down 😅, many mod's later they became more reliable. WOF is the only HF site left in Britain, sign of the times.
Lovely clip. At the end, I presume Anne Davies was about to say that was where she started her BBC career :-) I remember her starting as a TA around 1982.
What a wasteful generation we are. All these decisions probably made by people who only listen to Spotify and have no appreciation for Radio.
Absolute classic desk in very good condition, thanks for posting this and all your other videos, mutch appreciated by an old ,but still working BBC audio engineer.
A really intresting set of videos. I'm located 100 miles NE of the TX site and it's a big signal here particularly on 75 meters!
I did 2 weeks work experience at woofferton in 2004. Would love to visit again. You mention 10w out of the leak tl12+ into 2 100R resistors? Am i correct in saying that is 5w per resistor giving by ohms law 63V pk to pk, and this goes into the TT21. You mention 1000v pk to pk comes out of the 813. What is the voltage level out of the TT21 / going into the 813?
What happened to John Flourence?
Shame it's gone down hill the breakfast show is worst !! Come back Ben Jackson great breakfast Dj his voice his super jokes
what about the power supply to wooferton . i am thinking when all transmitters are on full output it must need a power station of its own .i thought the video very interesting a friend told me he came to wooferton some while ago are open days still held thanks
Rubbish, it's just about 2MW or even less
A dedicated power line was built in the 1960s from Ludlow over Tinker's Hill via Ashford Crossroads.
Ted Randall owner of wtww and the Grand ole opry hotel in Nashville used to be the senior engineer at the bbc transmitter in south africa and had to make his own parts a lot of times and Radio Caroline has the bbc world service london transmitter in Orfordness and is slowly working towards getting it back on the air. they already have radio one formerly on 648 medium wave starting Friday 22/12/17
Great to see the PPMs at the correct level as well, not forgetting the Uher tape recorder. The BBC local radio Mk 1 desk looks to be in pristine condition !
...destroying a milestone of radio history. Fucking idiots.
The best video on Broadcast transmitters I have seen buy far..........those older units take on a real personality don't they. Its great to see some of the old stuff still in there, and you would think a lot of this stuff should almost be heritage listed.......so much of it ends up as scrap.....such a shame. Anyway, I have really enjoyed your tour and totally professional presentation,
