Just old stuff that I work on, mostly Mopars from the 1950s and 60s.
1947 Ford 59AB Flathead V8 First Run After Refresh
Running this engine for the first time in an unknown number of years. This engine was seized but complete when purchased. It took about three months of soaking to free it up. No machine work done to the block, only honing and port polishing.

This engine has only run twice previously in the past 16 plus years, never for a prolonged period of time. My dad and I got a cheap radiator, a new water pump, and wired up an HEI converted Mopar electronic distributor to run this engine.
1956 Dodge 270 Poly V8 with headers
มุมมอง 1.5K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Update to previous video of the same engine. Now running headers originally built for a Toyota Tacoma with a 4.7 V8. The ports match almost perfectly and there was plenty of extra flange to drill and modify to match the heads’ exhaust ports. The flywheel, which was for a truck, was light-weighted by 12 pounds as well.

My dad rebuilt this engine in the spring of 2019. All stock components, but lots of attention to the small details. All new rings filed to close end gap specs. All intake, head and exhaust ports polished and matched.

A brief walk around of my 1961 Plymouth Savoy 2 Door Sedan. 225 Slant Six, 3 speed on the column. I will be parting this car out as it is pretty rotten in the rear quarters and in the rockers. If you're interested in parts, leave a comment. Car is in the Milwaukee, WI area.

This is a 1962 Poly 318 V8 that I purchased locally on craigslist. The engine was disassembled, but appeared to be in pretty good condition. I needed a drivetrain for my 1960 Plymouth 9 passenger wagon, so I asked my dad to refresh this motor while I rebuilt an AX15 transmission from a 1998 Dodge Dakota. The cylinders were honed, all new bearings and piston rings were installed. All parts are s...

Motor Sounds Great,
Sounds awesome for stock cam.
What transmission is that? Is that the long 53/54/55 bellhousing?
whats firing order n rotation on distributer clock wise or counter
whats firing order and rotation on distributer clockwise or counter clock wise
What muffler
What transmission do you have behind this? I want to take my three on the tree to a 4 or 5 speed floor shift.
Had two Mopars, ‘71 Charger 318 auto, 82 Ram Sport Stepside 318 stick. Bulletproof and fun on a budget!
Both of those would have the LA engine. The Poly's head was more akin to a hemi head. The LA series had "wedge" heads. The LA was choked down with a very low lift cam (.390" lift) and most were equipped with 2 bbl carbs. A very few with the "Denver package" had the Thermoquad 4 bbl.
What engine power are you betting on? What torque? Greetings from Poland
What setup did you need for the trans? I assume its a tr6060?
Beautiful. Are you running a Canadian aluminum intake?
GREAT JOB !
Had a 318 poly back in the day. My forever memory is how smooth it was and how much torque it had. Notice it doesn't vibrate at all on the engine stand.
That's basically a water cooled V8 Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine.
Not at at all
@@johndaniels1356 Actually that is pretty accurate. They sound great and run forever, just don't ask them to make any real horsepower.
They can make real horsepower. They just take more work. Make excellent torque.
Maybe accurate to you but I've seen a Briggs and Stratton V8 and it sounds nothing like a Ford flathead v8
@@johndaniels1356 If the B&S V8 has a cross plane crankshaft, it sounds EXACTLY like a Flathead Ford. A crossplane [even firing] V8 can only sound one way.....
The engine in my '47 Tudor Sedan doesn't use the "crab-style" distributor cap; it uses the V2 - 2 piece cap. Perhaps Ford left the earlier style on the truck engines.
The Flattie is THE most beautiful American V8, in my opinion.
That engine sounds sweet . GOOD JOB THAT MAN.
cannibals?
Motor 318 prende pero no acelera qué puede ser
Where did you get the headers I need some same engine. Thanks .
oil pressure is a little low...
Nice!!!
Saludos desde Ecuador si me ayudan con la caja de cambios de que vehículo es porque me parece que es adaptada gracias
Parece de Toyota Hilux año 2005 para arriba o sea la AX15
Cool! I just bought a 56 C3 pickup with the 270 Poly V8, and it turns over. Hasn't been run in more than 20 years. I'll get it running, but eventually the 56 cab/box is going onto my 2001 Dakota chassis with a 4.7HO engine, daily driver.
Wondering about the transmission what is it what year is it from?
Cool setup what year and what transmission are you using
Want a wagon??
That starter isnt right
You should never break an engine in idling.
Mind if I ask what are the specs for the cam you are using? Also, who did you get to rebuilt the original cast-iron torqueflite?
Ask all you want. His lips are sealed.
I need one of those motor in my car
Never idle an engine to seat rings
If you didn't have access to a 340!!
Gorgeous!!! I have a 270, 4bbl going in a '51 Henry J this Winter/Spring for next summer racing!!!
Im not a pro on mopar. Was wondering what poly block means as i hear it alot. Thank you great videos!!👍
Just a marketing term from the era, really. Short for polyspherical combustion chamber.
Very nice
Hi Jon Love your work! I`m in the process of rebuilding a 270 poly for a 1956 Dodge (Fargo) C3 truck. Any tips on engine work/cams/carb etc is much appriciated! Best Regards Sven H From Norway
This engine is all stock, but rings were gapped carefully and all the intake and exhaust ports were matched. Time consuming stuff, but free. We are running a 500 cfm Edelbrock with vacuum secondary and a Mopar small block electronic distributor converted to HEI.
@@BigJonsAntiqueMotors Thanks for your input Jon, much appriciated! I noticed you insulated the inlet manifold, any difference to stock? Also the headers I presume worked well. Best Regards Sven H From Norway
Do you have a link for the headers?
Cool !
just starting on my 56 dodge C3 pickup with a seized motor.. Can you tell me where you got engine parts to rebuild yours?
We ordered our rings from Summit Racing. Stock size ground to fit on the original used pistons. We did not have to buy any other engine parts.
Awesome! Canyou help with what distributor you used, and did you consider a different cam? Thanks!
Sounds beautiful.
First startup? Then don't let it idle on a flat tappet cam.
Fucking duhhhhh, for fucks sake, they know, first start AFTER break in you butterbrain
The best motor for sweptlines in my book. They're great racing engines too and were used for that a lot in the past.
I have had this combo in my 1960 Plymouth 9 passenger wagon for about 1.5 years now. It has 3.31 gears and 255/70R15 tires (29" OD) and it runs great down the road. I can drive it like a diesel truck, keep my RPMs low. I run 1500 RPM at 50 mph, or 1800 RPM at 60 mph. Averaging 15 mpg all around right now on 87 octane.
200hp -220 hp
@@BigJonsAntiqueMotorsI have a 1968 Power Wagon W500 with the 318 Poly in it. I love the set up.
The engine sounds very good and doesn't smoke. How much are parts on these engines ? Great job !!!
Expensive
very nice i hear you can bore those 318 blocks .090 is that true
Yes, there are plenty of examples online of people going 0.090 inch over bore to 4.000" total bore with a 4" stroke crank to make a 402 cubic inch Poly
@@BigJonsAntiqueMotors Very underrated combo.
Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!!! (BABBVEN LAWS )
Same old story. First, it was74- then 1980 s, then by 2K,and now- 2025.. 😅
The call it the big SCHLABUBVVO @@ThomasSmith-hh8fp
what did you have to do for the 5 speed
Since my Poly is a 1962, the 5 speed bolted right up to the block and the flywheel to the crank. No adapters required. The Jeep crowd is running this 5 speed behind 318s for off road rigs without issues, so the 5 speed was just a stock rebuild.
What Transmission is That? Is that a Big Block Stick?
Why is it in gear?
It's in neutral. Since there is nothing to keep it from spinning the drag of all the components is spinning the output shaft.
Don’t ask me how I didn’t realize that 🤣 she’s beautiful!! Which trans is that?
@@AncientAir It is the original cast iron TorqueFlite 3 speed auto. Chrysler introduced this trans mid 1956 and it immediately became standard equipment for Imperials.
Test, break in tranny too?
What can is in it?
Stock cam shaft
Running smooth! I just started working on my 1956 poly 259 do you have any suggestions for parts?
