Welcome to the ’Messy Middle!
Hi, I'm Bev, welcome to my channel where I share everything I've learned about life as a Gen X woman with late diagnosed ADHD who became an 'accidental entrepreneur' at the age of 52 - smack bang in the messy middle of menopause.
I also became a published author and even got to stand on the TEDx stage!

All well and good, when you are in the financial position to do so 🙄
Thank you for your wonderful down-to-earth inspiration
Thank you 🙏
So basically the advice is get yourself a good spouse and you're sorted. Splendid.
I'm still looking 😂
Privelged position to have a husband provide for u.
I don't disagree. We're a partnership and we support each other. I did also work full time for 36 years, bring up 2 children and support his career. We work together.
We have this in common! I was 52 when I quit after working the same job for 31 years and thankfully my guy encouraged me to step away while he has been supporting me even now as I’m trying to figure it all out! You are about 4 years ahead of me and you give me so much hope. I feel such depression in these days and a feelings of what is my purpose always whirling through my head. I know I’ll figure it out. I’m going through the mourning period after leaving all I ever knew behind. My channel really helps. It almost feels like therapy at times getting the thoughts out loud on my channel. This walk and talk was very validating. Thank you❤
It's good that you're taking your time to figure things out though Tracie. I do believe what's for you will find you x
Having a providing husband is a plan.
It was a safety net, not a plan.
the pension scam, half the people barely makes it to 65, and by the time you get there , you are half the time an arthritic , diabetic, burnt out , sexeless, impotent OAP...... and yeah i know it isnt everybody, but still..... your best life was spent working for a pension of 800 pounds a month..... and you are the lucky ones who own your houses....the millenials, and younger wont even own a pod
Well done you, it does take courage to do what you did. I did the same at age 61. Enjoy whatever you do and your video is very good grounded work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you 🙏
"I Quit My Job at 52 Without a Plan ", you had plan A since 1000000BC, it is called a husband
😂😂😂 💯
This was delightful to watch. 😁
Ah thank you 🙏
Very enjoyable. I was busy shaking my head yes!
Artificial eyelashes. Why? Why bother? Just do the best you can with your makeup and forget the artificial eyelashes. I'm a healthcare worker and one day I found one on the floor of the hospital. I thought well, I wonder if I might meet up with someone who looks a little uneven. And then if they find it with all the germs on the floor I hope no one would ever think to reuse it.
Haha that made me laugh. I've never understood false eyelashes 👀
I suffer alot with imposter syndrome and terrible self doubt. It ruled my life for a year and slowly trying to turn this around 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I’m going to go with 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 because you’re slowly turning it around ❤️💜👋
Feels good tohave more time for yourself. It is becoming tougher to retire early now.
You look absolutely Beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing your life with us. Love the information and encouragement and inspiration. Blessings to you.😊
Thank you Marcia xx

I just listened to this on my way home from school (work). I am there. It's time, and the universe has used you to help me realize that and start research about other options. My principal also just recently implied that my job is going to be reduced next fall as well. So messages are coming from all directions and I'm going to listen! Thank you!
Exciting! What do you think is next for you? 😊
@@BevThorogood Not sure yet...I have a couple of things I'm investigating - one is the meeting facilitation that I did the "imposter syndrome" video about. The other is 3D home printing. I've always been interested in construction/architecture and never did anything that direction. Maybe now is the time? We shall see!
Amazing legend look at u now x ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤we love u xxxx🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I think you may have gotten teary because you felt the depth of how true that moment was. You felt the pure joy in making the decision you made for yourself. Sharing that with us came from a place of compassion. It’s by telling our own stories that we connect with others AND heal ourselves. You just did both. This talk resonated with me deeply because I’m on the precipice of making this same decision. I’m coming up on many fears and feelings of inadequacy…like I haven’t EARNED it yet…even though I’ve worked in my career and the same position dutifully for 26 years. Fears because both my parents suffered major health setbacks after they retired…I want to LIVE fully…and experience all the joys that have gotten pushed aside due to my career. I don’t want to waste away. I’m not prepared financially, but have been a civil servant (teacher) and will have a pension. Ugh… Bev….theres so much to unpack here. Thanks so much for giving me some insight. ❤
Kim…are you a teacher? I am and in a space where I’m there too. It’s just not a fit anymore and at 55 (after a 26 year career), I’m wanting more for myself and to feel energized…not deadened at days end.
Agree with everything you've mentioned. And Yorkshire tea is the best 😍
It absolutely is lol
Aww thank you for this! I have this great stage fright that whenever I get up on some sort of stage, my whole body starts to shake, including my voice 😔 it's bec of my fear of being judged, that I might say something wrong, or there might be something wrong with how I look. I am taking baby steps since last yr and will continue until I overcome this 🍀
Well done on persevering. You will overcome it 🙌
Tights (in the US) are thicker than "nylons" or "pantihose." I prefer tights because they're thicker and stretchier.... but I haven't worn any of these in many years. It's TOO MUCH TROUBLE! 😆🤣
Thank you for clarifying. You’re right they’re too much trouble 🤪
Now out of your list the only one I don't agree with is sub titles. I can never read them in time before they change. But yes to all the rest.....and g.string just make me laugh out loud xx
They do go a bit quick at times for sure 😊
I feel like I need 'subtitles' on my life itself, LOL! I get it though. I love the subtitles. Isn't it funny how the older we get, the wiser we get? Especially when we thought we were so wise 'back in the day." Well said friend. I feel like you can just keep adding to the list. 17 just feels like a drop in the bucket. 🥰
There’s a challenge! How many more can I think of 🤪
I wholeheartedly agree with the entire list. I read an article that the sound on flat screen TV's is not a priority, there's no room for good speakers. They expect you to buy a sound bar, which no... the TV already costs enough. So I always have the subtitles on. Ok yes, my hearing is probably less sharp than it was. I can only talk on my phone with headphones now. Regarding tiny fonts: I can't read them either. My son showed me a great trick though. Take a picture of the package and zoom in on it. That way you don't have to carry a magnifying glass. No more high heels, absolutely need pockets in all dresses (it's the first thing I look for), and no more dressing to impress. After turning 50, I realized no one was looking anyway, I felt suddenly invisible. At first it was disheartening, but I've learned to embrace invisibility. It's nice to walk down the street and not worry about catcalls or harassment anymore. I pass incognito everywhere I go and I love it!
Ooh I love the advice to photo and zoom! Brilliant 🙏🙏
I never knew that about flat screens tv. I thought it was just me who heard 'mumbling' 😂. I don't want more electronics (sound bars) cluttering the place.
I love being invisible at 68. I go to the store at 7 in the morning not caring what l look like. It's only seniors there that early minding our own business.
When you drive under the speed limit... no one's ever in your way! 🎉
That is soooo true ❤🤗👍
What makes no sense to you after 50? Let me know in the comments 😊❤
Good video and your videographer did a great job!
Ha yes she's a keeper 😊
So grateful I happened upon you Bev. You talk about my life except I was diagnosed with BPD at 53 (there is a large crossover with ADHD). 6 years earlier I had to leave work due to my deteriorating mental health. Thank you for all you making sense of it for me. Starting a new career right now and overwhelmed by imposter syndrome, which is ridiculous when I compare it to my past career!
Hi and thank you 🙏. It's tough dealing with the imposterism. Just keep reminding yourself it's not the truth x
watching this has provided me with validation. you describe me and my past 18 months as if you have been a fly on the wall in my life
Don't wish your life away.😂
Nope definitely not.
My thoughts exactly!
My 40s have been tragic and stressful but I will be retiring in 9 years so I’m looking forward to my late 50s!! I am happy to see your perspective on 60. 🎉 aging is a privilege, so many people forget that.
Life is full of highs and lows and I love your positivity 🩵
I understand that feeling. It was always easier to act as a character to fit the occasion rather than being me as I was not entirely sure who the real me was. It has definitely been easier since I got my diagnosis as I understand myself better now.
It's extra lovely when you have a sweet human to walk through the open fields with you. I just love that you have the bravery to speak on stage and I know you can since you have done it before. You are a very inspiring human being and I'm thankful I get to know you.
Thank you Tracie. Right back at you. I see so much courage in the Gen X creators that I follow x
Great message and insight as always Bev. Get well soon
🩵🙏❤️
Well said, thanks
I want to be a trauma coach. But I'm afraid of accidentally hurting someone because I don't do it perfectly.
I would say the fact that you're aware of the possibility tells me you’ll be an incredibly caring coach 😊
Love the joy in the young one walking, skipping, being.❤
When I first got commissioned in the RAF after being an NCO previously I sat in the Officers Mess at RAF Linton on Ouse as a fresh Pilot Officer waiting for someone to come up and tap me on the shoulder and tell me to get out as I’m not supposed to be here. I’ve had this many times in my career as an entertainer too when in in situations of sharing a stage or a bill with an established artist, always waiting for someone to tell me to leave even though I’m often the headline act. I’ve always powered through it but it’s not easy
That in my mind is definitely imposter syndrome. You didn't doubt your abilities but questioned whoo are you to be there. Brilliant example x
What a wonderful start to a video to see my Great Niece skipping through the countryside. Lovely, xxxxx to you both.
Let me know in the comments, what gets you most, self doubt or imposter syndrome?
I can't decide!
I guess knowing what it is is useful but the solution is pretty much the same. Script is normal ad human to feel these things but push on and do whatever is causing the discomfort anyway ❤️
I'll be 61 Nov 10 n I hate the age. Not happy about getting older . People look at me like I'm already old n done. HATE IT
