    The architecture of the Visualize fx cards are covered in HP Journal from May 1998. Not mentioned in the article, but one of the things I remember about it is that a bunch of the chips in the fx cards are just additional specialized PA-RISC processors.

    Hi, First of all love your videos reminds me why we got into this format even though it has mostly been forgotten there is something we all love about Minidisc that adds to any system. A little while ago I bought a JB940 Sony from the UK as I am in Australia to replace my other unit, That was just too past it to fix . I received it and changed the plug for Australian electrical and it seemed fine for a while (3 years)just recently when it gets turned on it just tics No display and just wont power up properly as you have dealt and fixed many minidiscs could you share some light on what might be the problem I do have a very good repair place that I use that I could send to JVP Service Centre in marrickville nsw but if it is something you thought I could tackle Myself that would be good. Thank you Look forward to your response Dennis

      Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately it's going to be hard to make any helpful comment. I don't have as much experience as you think. In general terms though, the first thing I would check is the power supply: check you are getting expected AC onto the main board via CN403, CN404. Check the DC output from regulators IC400, IC401, IC402. Try to isolate if something sround those has gone bad or something they feed has shorted pulling a whole supply rail down. Good luck.

    Thanks for the memories! Back in the late 90's / early 2000's I was in charge of a network of CAM workstations that ran HP-UX. The last HP-UX machines I bought were HP C3000's and HP C3600's running HP-UX 10.11 if I recall. Around 2004 our CAM software was ported to Linux so I switched over to Red Hat machines in 2005 and relegated the old HP workstations to terminals for manufacturing machines out on the shop floor. Even though the OLD workstations were workhorses the Linux machines were an order of magnitude faster in all regards and cost 25% of what the HP machines did. Having said that, in 2007 I had a Dell RAID server running Red Hat that corrupted the whole disk array due to a firmware issue in the RAID controller. I'm confident something like that wouldn't have happened on an HP RISC-based machine.

      I don't think there was any particuar trick - just carefully stretech around, using some fingers to hold in place the first section, then rotate so you can keep stretching around the next bit. It will be frustrating at first but eventually you will be able to get it all on without the first bit slipping off.

    cool stuff! Today I cleaned up my hp C3600 "Bastille HP-UX 11.11 Jumpbox", setup & used back in 2007 for a T-Mobile project where we deployed a very swanky Sun Cluster WAP gateway. Due to good T-Mobile IT Security constraints (no data out possible from the attached T-Mobile admin linux boxes in Bonn HQ). I used this workstation for reverse tunneling (I am Civil Engineer ...) from one of the WAP Gateway Front-End Server when connected to the internet "home", so I could finally 'grep' the complex system configuration for documentations. I again forgot root password after longer no use, and due to "Bastille" security setup it is a quite tricky thing to reset root password, especially 'cos I havn't touched HP-UX for centuries. But finally I could fix it. Think I got nearly 10 boxes (plus 3 a-class servers, but also several x86 VISUALIZE X-CLASS & X4000 Workstations) of these brave nuclear attack prune PA-RISC HEWLETT PACKARD Workstations. (HEWLETT PACKARD & its "HP-Way" rest in peace) My C3600 got the fx10+ GA and 2 IBM 9 GB Drives.

    Hi Nick, I've been watching this and your last video with great interest because it seems to be the only video about a hp-risc machine that involves graphics output and hp-ux on youtube :D I'm currently trying to get a HP Visualize FX10 pro to work in my HP3000 A500 server, which seems to be the exact same hardware as a HP9000 A500 server. And these machines share the same architecture of the C-Series workstations. I just could not manage to get the console redirected to the graphics card and also none of my USB PCI cards seem to be recognized by the system... Could you maybe take a look into your machine and try to find out which kind of USB controller chip it is using? I removed the disc tray the same way that you did. When I replaced it back as it was, it wouldn't work. I just get a continual clicking noise as described below by another owner who has the same clicking problem. I didn't do any rough handed work. I even wore an anti static wrist strap while working on it. You have mentioned below in one of your answers to a question that it could be "the relay that turns on/off power to the main circuit/display, controlled by a microcontroller and its own small power supply."...........As I said my one was working OK until I changed the small belt. Do you have any idea what the problem could be ?. I am thinking maybe I have damaged a ribbon. In hindsight I should have left the disc tray in the until and not removed it. It is quit easy to change the belt without removing the tray mechanism and risking damaging the ribbons.

    The drive seems to be identical to my Je640, thougt the QS series might use more advanced one. The main difference seems to be the linear powers supply(at least i think so) with a R core transformer where my has a simple Switch mode board.

    Any chance you could link that battery pack? All I found are either out of stock or discontinued. Appreciated.

      @@nicksmith4507 I found all of them. The first and second are too large to fit into the housing. The last one contains 1.5V 150mAh 1/3AAA but sadly they are not available.

    Hi there I have a mds jb940 with no power when I switch it on there is no power but there's a clicking sound Coming from a black box in between the two transformers. Any ideas what it could be please. I'm in North Wales UK

    • @nicksmith4507
      @nicksmith4507 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The click is from the relay that turns on/off power to the main circuit/display, controlled by a microcontroller and its own small power supply. More than that, I can't say, I am afraid - it would take some careful analysis of the schematic and testing at various points in the circuit.

    How do you get it open????

    I said "heat sink" but really it's not - it's just a RF screen Update: While the TV seemed more reliable for several months, it recently started playing up again. A fee reboots again, but also strange UI hangs: it would freeze in the middle of a UI transition in a most peculiar way. 20s later it would come back. Or perhaps not. I got a new mainboard off eBay (1-889-202-2) for £15, and for the last few days it's behaved perfectly. Procedure: unscrew mainboard and tuner board. Unplug tuner board from main board. Most of the connectors can be removed easily, but the video ribbon cable is tricky. Just pulling managed to damage the corner lugs of the cable so when putting into the replacement board it's hard to line up. The first time I failed and got no picture. Second time I managed to get it back in exactly in the centre, and it's been perfect since.

      Just search on eBay for the Sony model number and you should find a matching belt
