My First Animatronic Build! - Homemade Animatronic Mech inspired by The Rock-afire | Atlas Update
Atlas animatronic update!! Random college student builds animatronics instead of doing materials science homework
Hopefully this "new" series will be useful in learning some things about building and designing animatronics. In case you are new to this project, this is my animatronic mechanism that I started building in 2022, and have since found the time to give it a major rehaul. I have built this figure entirely from the ground up, and have either modeled or machined everything you see.
The mechanism is inspired by the Rock-afire Explosion design, but it also strays away from it as well, as my understanding of how animatronics work grew bigger. I began to deploy my own creativity and design skills into this mechanism.
Through both my education in engineering and curiosity to learn new things, I have been able to use my strengths as a tool to reverse engineer, design, and build what you see here.
Watch as I finish this figure, that began my interest in animatronic engineering, turn into the eventual completion of my entire band. As the years go on, I will continue to learn and strengthen my design skills through building more animatronic figures like this one.
Thanks for watching!

@collegetoycollector yay! Can't wait!
Come on, you will soon achieve your goals. 🎉
Howwww pls tell me how
22:18 where did you get those piston heads?
Wasn’t aware we’d still be seeing these! Looking great.
@@S.J.C._Entertainment Yup! Just been busy finishing my last semester. There’s more to come, stay tuned!
I’m not kidding when I say this, I think this is the first time I’ve seen someone’s custom animatronic that is literally on par with the likes of CEI, Creative Presentations, all those companies. Heck this even beats a crud ton of VP’s characters too. I can’t express how pumped I am once the cosmetic parts start happening! And regarding the springs, I’m assuming they were intended to be for some sort of secondary movement like a hip shake or something? I know some characters from varying companies have a little bit of flop in some areas to make them look less stiff
Houndog was pretty on par with his last version on Dave too.
@@Sea_of_Waves thank you, this means a lot. My goal is to make my animatronics as professional as possible, to hopefully turn it into something one day. I have put a ton of work into this figure alone, and I’m happy to finally get to start showing it again. Like you already know from the previous video, so much of the work was all drawing, design, spreadsheets and CAD based for the last few months, so there was nothing to show. Now everything is starting to come together!
Nice job I’ve been following the journey since the beginning
@@LeperchaunStoryMofo awesome, thanks for sticking around!
Do you still have Dook?
@@GoofyGoober747 of course

@@Sammey12136 finishing my engineering degree, this is the last thing on my agenda.
With your achievements in engineering. I'm incredibly optimistic about the future for Mattel. Having animatronic action figures one day. Is a goal that I felt would happen by now?
@@playdisplay1468 Thank you, that means a lot to hear. This project was partially what got me noticed by someone at Mattel in the first place… a former Disney imagineer. And now I am a part of what I’d consider the most “engineering intensive” brand. I hope to do a lot of great things, both in and out of work. Thanks for watching!
@collegetoycollector I genuinely hope that you are the next generation. That changes action figures.
@ I’m not on the action figures team as of now, but you never know what the future holds!
How many movements does he have?
@@GoofyGoober747 with the design I have in mind, there should eventually be 15. That may change.
@ nice!!
Under what circumstances would you recommend using servos over pneumatics?
depends on the motor strength and the weight of the load but usually like a small servo (ex: 9g) would be good for lightweight plastic or cardboard but it depends in most cases
@@ethanfishell1930 a lot of factors: scale, material, precision of movements, application. A life size animatronic character will have movements that need the strength of a linear actuator to work effectively. Servos are good for small movements that need precision, but they are not as strong as linear force.
Nice. Please keep these videos coming.
Beautiful! Can’t wait to see more on him.

Are there places I could use a milling machine? Did you buy one? Or is there a place you go to that has one?
There are machine shops that you can have memberships to, you can look up ones around your area. You typically need to be an adult and go through training to be certified to use certain machines. They tend to be very strict on safety as well, which makes sense.
@@collegetoycollector I'm in my late 20s, so that's no problem. When you say training, are we talking a couple months of training or a couple years?
@ It’ll probably be only a few weeks at maximum. I get all my machine shop training through my engineering education, so I’m not entirely sure how it is outside, but it’s definitely not years. Machines are very dangerous if you do not know how to use them safely, so that’s why you are required to have some form of certification to use them. Hope this helps! I can talk more about it in a future video if that’s of interest.
@@collegetoycollector yeah, that would be great. I am a professional puppeteer and puppet builder and I am trying to eventually build animatronic versions of my original puppet characters.
@ that’s really neat! Do you work independently or with a group? I plan to show more of my work when I get around to it. What things would you be interested in me to specifically talk about?

Holy cow. The amount of time and measurements that have been put into these part and move designs must’ve been absolutely insane. The best products are the ones that are well thought out and planned, I think it’s safe to say that you’ve got a BRIGHT future with your engineering projects. Looking forward for Atlas’s further development!
@@Sea_of_Waves thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I put a lot of time into designing things because I want them to be the best they can be within my capabilities. A lot of the true work goes unnoticed b/c it’s all measuring and making spreadsheets and models on the computer. Just about every part and mechanism I design gets redesigned over-and-over, until it’s “perfect”. I look forward to Atlas being finished, I want to show people what he can do! Who knows what else I’ll end up experimenting with in the future 😊
@@collegetoycollector Who is Atlas, as a character? Do you have drawings of Atlas? Is he/she an original character?
@ Atlas is one of my own characters, a part of a band called “Mesozoic Mayhem”. As time continues (and as I get more space), I plan to have this entire band a reality in my house, or if I partner with someone who runs a business. Atlas is the character I am building right now. The band is punk-rock, and they are catered towards an adult audience, but anybody can enjoy them. I have concept sketches of every character, both their appearance and mechanism designs. I need to make fully finished paintings of them at some point though, so that their appearance is fully fleshed out.
I have a question, if atlas’s eyes are on the front of his head, and dinasuars are on the sides, how thats gonna work?
@@cec_oregon good question, I most likely will end up redesigning the head to account for the eyes being slightly more recessed. They still will be facing forward, but not leveled like you mentioned.
Indeed, a certified Animatronic classic.
