Preparing a CF / SD card as a hard drive for the Atari Falcon
In this video, I demonstrate how to prepare a compact flash or SD card for use as a hard drive alternative in the Atari Falcon.
The hardware used is:
- CF-IDE adapter, 44pin variety. Available for less than AUD$5
- 44pin IDE cable (if your Falcon doesn't have one)
- 8GB CF card. Cost AUD$20-30, but quality ones can be somewhat difficult to source.
Alternatively, you can used:
- SD-IDE adapter, 44-pin variety. Available for around AUD$13
- 8GB SD card. Available for around AUD$9.
Software required is:
- Uwe Seimet's brilliant HDDRIVER software. Available at www.hddriver.net/ for 45 Euro, OR
- ICD 6.5.5 HD utilities. Free but limited in functionality. www.icd.com/atari/adscsi.zip
(Prices current as at November 2018).

The Atari Falcon can also benefit from the Gotek Floppy drive emulator. This video shows that the installation of the Gotek drive is a relatively straight forward process for the Atari Falcon (compared to installing the drive in the Atari ST series of computers). With the rectangular cut out from the floppy drive's face plate, the Gotek is easily viewable with the Falcon's case assembled.

    Hello, can I load into Atari some program (e.g. Steinberg PRO 24, that I own) from original FDD (Epson 480L in my case), then connect Gotek floppy emulator in place of FDD and save PRO 24 into Gotek? I'd like to use Gotek instead of FDD, but have this sequencer PRO 24 only on original DD floppy disk. Don't know how to transfer sequencer from floppy disk to Gotek. Many thanks for your help.

    Hi, I'm waiting for my own OSSC to connect my ATARI STE to my DELL monitor. What RGB to SCART cable have you used? I'm going to build it myself so any help on a working cabling and pinouts would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    • @modernisingyourretrocomput3866
      @modernisingyourretrocomput3866 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used one from Cool Novelties. Obviously, this will only give you the ST's low and medium resolution colour modes, but I had since moved to using an ST2VGA adapter to connect the ST to the VGA input on the OSSC - this gives you access to all three resolutions then. The OSSC's VGA input doesn't have a low pass filter so it isn't as clean as the OSSC's SCART input. I've just received a VGA to SCART adapter that will allow the ST to pass 3 resolutions to the SCART input, allow the low pass filter to be used, and hopefully all 3 resolutions will look clean again.

    0:40 as for the little ghosting (which is far more obvious in some games and demos), it's a common problem with the STE and Mega STE machines. I showed this in a (german) video and how to solve this. It's quite an easy fix by just adding a capacitor to an existing one (or remove it with the new one). As I can't put links in comments anymore search my channel for "Atari STE, Anti-Ghosting". I linked to the original article of this solution from exxos UK in my video description. 😉

    Do I understand that correctly you actually no need for rotating encoder as well as LED display since you have an onscreen browser (unlike Acorn or amiga)?

    • @modernisingyourretrocomput3866
      @modernisingyourretrocomput3866 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rotating encoder and OLED display are really optional extras for the Gotek, as you have the standard two buttons on the unit and numerical LED display that serve the purpose of being about to change disks and display the current active allocated disk "slot". The onscreen browser is for allocating the disk image files on the USB drive to the disk slots on Gotek. The Amiga does have the same HxC browser available to do this too (it's available here: hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/SDCard_HxC_Floppy_Emulator_Manager.zip)

    Well that was easy... Funnily enough I waited about 6 weeks for the eBay gotek to arrive and yesterday I decided to get one from amigastore because I thought it was lost or something, well of course it arrived the day after I ordered the expensive preconfigured one from amigastore... Oh well, the good thing is the one I got for the Amiga is one that has a custom plate for fitting inside the Amiga and I can use my cheap one purely for the ST without swapping around jumpers all the time, good to have multiple goteks anyway in the long run. Very simple and easy tutorial to follow, only thing that stumbled me for a bit was the pinout for the TX and RX for the Gotek but that was one google search away and it would've been easy to swap the 2 around if they were backwards

The "1M44" part of the model number suggests this contains 1.44MB firmware, but this won't matter if you are flashing your own - the underlying hardware is the same.
