I'm a keen sea kayaker who loves to explore the rugged Scottish coastline and islands. I live with the spectre of clinical depression and keep myself as well as I can by living adventurously and by immersing myself in the natural world as much as possible. I hope my channel and playlists portray the life I have chosen and am fortunate enough to lead and in a big part, offer you the wisdom I have accrued through my sixty years.
Thank you very much for watching. Please leave comments, subscribe and like or dislike any of my short films.

Sea Kayaking The Mull of Kintyre | Solo
This is a throwback to my year long sea kayak journey around Scotland 2022/2023, when I paddled around the infamous headland, the Mull of Kintyre. Here the tides can create challenging seas with a large tide race. Ads you will see, it was not as bad as I feared.

This is a film about my recent overnight excursion from Tobermory to a camp spot at the foot of Ben Hiant on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. It was a poignant trip because it was my first kayak camping trip of the year, having been laid low with a severe bout of clinical depression. It was a wonderful experience in every respect and I hope you enjoy my telling of it. I mention my next long adventur...

Sea Kayaking North East Scotland - Part Two
มุมมอง 1.2K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the second part to my film about the day I spent kayaking from Noss Head (Wick), down to Lybster on the north east coast of Scotland. It's an absolutely incredible stretch of coast with myriad caves, arches and geos. A must for any sea kayaker! All filmed with a GoPro Hero 11 on a head strap.
Solo Sea Kayaking North East Scotland - Part One

The coastline of North East Scotland, from Noss Head (Wick) down to Lybster is some of the finest I've ever explored in my kayak. You'll need your headphones for this one to enjoy the atmosphere. I enjoyed calm seas which allowed me deep into the myriad caves. If you're a kayaker, this is a stretch of coastline which has to be enjoyed. All the camera work is with a GoPro Hero 11 on a head strap...
Scotland Sea Kayaking | Beneath the Iconic Bridges Across the Firth of Forth.
มุมมอง 1.1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's unusual for me to enjoy kayaking close to large infrastructure, but I couldn't help be awed by the mightiness of the three Firth of Forth crossings. The rail bridge is the most fascinating and quite something to behold for its construction and sense of history. I particularly enjoyed paddling right below it when trains rumbled overhead. All the filming with a GoPro Max 360º camera. Kayak: ...

What's the length and weight? And how did you install your gopro?
Thank you, Nick, for your honesty and for sharing a very personal story. You have helped me in that I now feel I can go back to my doctor and to community mental health supports which I have been dreading. Depression has been terrifying and exhausting. I am so glad you are ok.
The swells are hitting the cliffs then bouncing back out again and interacting with the incoming waves. That's why it is so choppy. Would be less of a problem further out from cliffs.
Hi, just a few questions. What’s the length of your dual ball mount? Did you drill the mount or is it suction to the deck? What’s the length of your kayak?
Thank you for your openness and honesty about your recent bout with severe depression. I'm sure this will touch others facing a similar crises. I only found your channel this week, and was immediately drawn in by your video " A Challenging Day- Huge Atlantic Swell". I wish you well on your journey of mind and soul, as well as your hike. Fair winds and following seas. (sub'd)
Thank ypu for share de experiences! 🙌
Really enjoyed the film Nick, good to get the insights on your camp set up. Of course like others we are looking forward to hearing about your next trip and seeing how you are getting along with the paraglider.
Thanks for sharing the video and God bless you at every moment of your life.
Remember that there is always a better day upcoming, always a better day.
As an old man of the sea and one time Kayaker I congratulate you on a courageous day on the water. Don't do that again !
So stimulated
I had depression also and attempted suicide, then after ending up in hospital and detox stopped drinking alcohol. I thought alcohol was my freind and cheered me up but was told by my psychiatrist that the alcohol was causing my depression. I stopped drinking but was “dry drunk” (not uncommon) then I went to AA meetings and all the depression fell away. There are hundreds of AA meetings 24/7 I saw you talk about depression and wondered if this would be useful. It’s actually a real allergy but I needed a spiritual solution.
I could feel those midge bites through the video
To all those who "haven't been there", GoPros make things seem a lot flatter than they really are!
I used to use my gopro on chest place, I now use it on a suction cup on thw foredeck and even then it doesn't do the conditions justice.. m.th-cam.com/video/hu2XVViTw74/w-d-xo.html

I am reading a novel set in Scotland that mentions singing seals. Had to hear it for myself. Thanks for bringing it to life. Cool.
Good luck Nick. I must say, your vids are always inspirational and motivating. I love watching them. 👌
You mentioned you have a vacuum flask. Do you know about thermal cooking? It's a technique where you heat the food up to a simmer then pop it in a heated flask and after an hour or two is better it's cooked and ready to eat. I also make my own dehydrated food. Normally stews without the meat as I don't like dehydrated meat. It reduces the weight by up to 80 % and the bulk by 40 %. I cook the meat in a pressure cooker kilner jar system.
Muy buen video. Muchas Gracias y buenos Viajes!!!
It's great to see you out and about again. I'm toying with the idea of heading over to Treshnish this weekend. If I do I'll give you a shout.
Welcome back mate, you so lucky to live where you do.Seems such a lovely place i could so live there!!!
Scary stuff that high swell. What kayak you using
Huh? This is amazing!
Hi Nick, firstly thanks for producing a very enjoyable and relaxing video. I was intrigued about your paragliding plan, sounds great. It is something, along with hang gliding, which I tried years ago. So best of luck with your training. Now, I am 66 yrs old, and wanting to get into sea kayaking. I am fit an active. So confident with myself in that way. But need advice to getting started. I live in the North East of England. So intending to purchase a kayak and start out on rivers and lakes, before tackling the sea. Any advice? Thanks.
Thanks Nick for another great video. I live on Kintyre and have just spent 3 days going around Gigha. The Mull may be next having watch this. Good to have you back.
Nice scenic paddle there Nick. Also nice to hear some happy sounds for your good self. I would like to circumnavigate the Hebridean Isles at some point in time.
Cripes that area is remote, little or no chance of a get out of jail card. 23kms trip...?
Perfect timing 👌
Good morning from Brittany. Thank you for sharing Nick. Just discovered your channel and very much like your content. Somehow very comforting and peaceful :)
Hi nick great video have great day.
What an amazing day! Crikey! Well done Nick.
Nice trip
Fantastic!! What an adventure! Thanks for posting.
I'm living all wrong. You have it figured out. Put your faith and trust in yourself. It's the realist thing indeed. Thanks for the inspiration.
Wonderful!
Just found your channel. Great film. I’m inspired! I moved up to the Highlands a couple of years ago and have developed a yearning for sea kayaking! I’m off for some training in a week. Hopefully I’ll be out on the sea in the spring. Happy paddling.
A wonderful film Nick. Great to have you back
A great film, thank you😊
Nick, as always many thanks. I finished my first three day kayak expedition yesterday and was feeling very flat until I watched your video. You have inspired me to look at that coastline as I’m only in Kintyre. So good to have you and your films back.
Wonderful video. So good to see you enjoying a great day on the water and your first overnight stay in a while. Thank you.
Another great video Nick & glorious weather. Look forward to Nick Ray - LifeASoar with your paraglider ! Those coffee filters are excellent (ground Columbian Arabica ), wood burning stoves are useful and leave no trace, I use either Solo Stove, small backpacking one or the larger Titan one, and a homemade penny-can meths stove for backup with homemade wind shield. If any consolation Nick this summer was really awful weather, June - cold and wet with July not much better. hopefully we will have an Indian Summer to enjoy. All best
The Beauty of your videos is they way that you transport us along with you. Always a time to just slow down and get your mind to run with the tranquil pace of the video. The added bonus for us is seeing you back out on the water making films that we enjoy and hopefully bring you inner peace as you go one your adventures once more. Looking forward to your next video.
lovely relaxing watch - thanks
Wonderful video. Thank you for taking us along with you on such a magical journey. So glad you're enjoying your kayaking again❤
Nice to see you back in your kayak.
Great video 👍 great paddle. So did you finish that bottle off ? Some beautiful views, and yes you're right you made the right decision with your route back. Looking forward to watching your next video.
so beautiful.
the beach and the pink morning sky.... reminds me of Lake Superior.
Beautiful … soothes the soul
Absolutely gorgeous landscape. Thanks for sharing with us.
Looks gorgeous weather.
What a fabulous camping place. and sea journey, thank you. Midges are hard to love. So peaceful, sitting on the edge of the sea with the evening light fading, and the fire. Thanks for this lovely video.
