DIY Power Feed for Round Column Milling Machine (Part 1)
I'm building a power feed for my 2.5 HP milling machine! In this video I build a mounting bracket to attach a nema 23 stepper motor to the X axis of the milling table. You can also use this mounting technique to equip your mill for CNC controls.
This design should work on any round-column Chinese or Taiwanese milling machine such as the:
- Harbor Freight Central Machinery mill/drill
- Wong Fu RF-25, RF-30, RD-31, RF40, and RF-45
- Jet JMD-15, JMD-18, JMD-40
- Grizzly G0705, G0760 Mill/Drill
- and probably others I'm not thinking of.

      Try loosening the nut. If it gets so loose the spring is jiggling around, or the nut comes off, and it still won’t turn off at lower pressures, then you probably have a damaged pressure switch.

    My switch has on & off positions. IR T30 model 2340 L5. When the switch is off it still runs. When the switch is on it runs. It went to 175+ and was still running. Shouldn’t it stop if the switch is in the off position? Guessing the pressure switch is shot…….? Got this at an auction.

    • @MountainMikeNM
      @MountainMikeNM 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Possibly shot or the springs are so cranked down that the contacts can’t disengage. Try loosening both springs’ nuts until there’s only a tiny bit of compression (just enough to prevent them from rattling around) and then see if the cutoff lever works.

    Nice video, I am thinking of purchasing one of these round column mills so am checking out every ones upgrades they have done, over all do you think they are worth the money ? They seem very heavy and solid for the price , and have good power , with some simple mods like DRO for the quill and eventually power feed like your doing, oh they seem to have a fairly large table and 17 inches longitudinal travel, also, thanks for posting. cheers from Canada.

    • @MountainMikeNM
      @MountainMikeNM ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, thanks for the question and sorry I somehow missed this. Depending on your budget and shop space, I definitely think the round column mills are immensely useful. Mine is set up with a three axis DRO with the Z on the Quill, similar to what you are thinking. I am able to make some nice parts with it. The biggest challenge I have is adjusting the Z height for different length tooling. For example, switching from an end mill in a collet to a large drill in a chuck would require moving the head up and down. There are tricks for maintaining your zero position while moving the head, but none of them are perfect, and all of them are moderately frustrating. Also changing belts to adjust the spindle speed gets old. All of this said, considering you can get a used one for sometimes as low as a few hundred dollars, you really can’t go wrong. But, and this is a big one, if you have the space and the budget, a smaller Bridgeport clone, say with a 36 inch table, barely takes up more of a footprint on your shop floor.

    • @MountainMikeNM
      @MountainMikeNM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I missed this. Is it a newer or older motor? If new, do you have the correct thickness of supply wire? Running too light of wire to a heavy draw can cause coils to overheat. Otherwise look for cooling/airflow problems or mechanical resistance in the system to start.

    My compressor starts working and builds pressure up to 150psi but sometimes during work it will not start and won't keep tank charged. Sometimes it turns on only for a few seconds then goes quiet. Sometimes I hears something that it wants to start like air going somewhere through the pipe for about 2 second and then quiets and stays like that. Fails to keep up pressure in tank when I use it. Pressure goes low as 50psi but compressor doesn't start. Then I had to open drain valve to release remaining air pressure in the tank. Disconnect it from AC power for few minutes and it starts working again build up to 150psi again. I don't hear any air leaks. What could be wrong? How to fix it?

    • @MountainMikeNM
      @MountainMikeNM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Based on what you're describing it sounds like you may have a faulty pressure switch. They can wear out. You could also have some kind of obstruction in the air line leading from the tank to the pressure switch, like a big flake of rust. Those are my best guesses without seeing it myself.

    my switch only wants to cut in at 135 and out at 175, if i turn it counter clockwise will it work ? or is that switch not going to work ? ideally i would want it to cut out at 125ish

    • @MountainMikeNM
      @MountainMikeNM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems pretty high - like it's meant for a different range. Are you sure your compressor isn't designed to run at a higher pressure? For example, some 2-stage compressors can go as high as 250psi if I recall. If this is the case, you would want to use a regulator to drop the outgoing pressure. If it should definitely be lower, turning counter-clockwise might work. But generally the switches are designed for a certain pressure range and the adjustment is for fine tuning. Another thing you could try doing is to measure pressures with a different gage to make sure the one on your compressor is accurate.

      I sold IR compressor for years and you are actually incorrect! starting up on a compressor is one of the hardest things on the compressor. It should be and 175! they wider the start stop gap the better. The compressor is under a stead load when running and cycles less there for less stress on the motor and compressor head.
