I have a very similar relationship with my parents, and none of my friends can relate, so it's good to hear from you. It's similar in that my dad can also go months without speaking to me despite living together, is unable to emotionally regulate, and doesn't communicate what things are bothering him, and it's exhausting and scary living with someone who can be explosive and moody.

asian's lifelong struggle: getting rid of their parents

This is so relatable in Chinese household. My parents are similar to yours where they expect me to drop my life and attend to their needs. It is very toxic. It had affected me mentally and physically for years because I was not getting enough sleep, lost focus, depressed, formed me to be codependent, lack of appetite. I was the same where it is extremely hard to have these conversations with my parent without getting emotional. It is very hard. My solution was moving out. I found peace however, I did not go to therapy to fix this childhood trauma from my parent. I still think about it often as of lately and I am so much older now. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever get rid of those trauma or memories.

I'm from India and I hate this culture of being expected to "respect out elders" just because they are older than us, whether or not they are respectful to us and treat us well. My boyfriend and I are considered black sheep in our respective families because we are both people who don't take shit, and we don't fall at the feet of everyone older than us.
