Join me for art content , sometimes it's an art tutorial or product review, other times it's a fun creative art challenge.
I don't shy away from trying new things and hopefully I will inspire others to be creative and try something new.
What’s my background? I’ve worked as an artist, illustrator, sculptor, prop maker, and set designer.

I’ve been watching some of these videos and I swear your TH-cam channel is a hidden treasure! More people need to know about it!!!
@@rotten0apples Thank you, that is very nice!
I want to try this! Thanks
I’ve been wanting to try this, thanks for the tips!
@@charlarp glad you found it helpful!
Wow, fascinating to watch you create, Laura. Love seeing how you blend the pastels. An amazing likeness!
Thanks, Liz!
Your drawing skills and colour knowledge are amazing.
@@sharonhiebert1977 thank you!
I left pastels also because of paper if i use sanded (UART) paper it was very dusty and falling down while pastelmat was very frustrating to blend on surface...please comment 🙏
@@sujanithtottempudi2991 soft pastels leave dust and oil pastels leave flakes. I am new to both and just remove them as i work. For soft pastels I kept a bowl of water and a rag next to me to wash my fingers after blending.
I left pastels because of the mess and dust...otherwise its an excellent medium
What paper is this?
@@sujanithtottempudi2991 strathmore toned tan sketch paper. I should have used a pastel paper, lol.
This was a wonderful idea!
@@leighsirvent654 thank you!
To open this bottles it’s needed to press it first. I use several layers of fabric. Put the bottle on hard chair, fabric on top and press with whole the body weight, turn the cap after click sound. If clean screwing part carefully after each use, it opens much easier, but I forget to do so often.
@@Nastyasptmbr Thanks. My hands couldn’t do it, lol. I even had my husband try when he got home; it took him a while but he was able to do it. I transferred it to another container that was easier to open. We will try the fabric trick when I buy a new bottle.
Does the linseed oil seep into the paper of the book at all?
Good question. I let it dry for quite a while and haven’t had that happen. But if you are worried about the possibility, you could always use a light coat of matte spray acrylic finish instead.
This is great. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Texas tea! 😂. Thanks for alerting us about opening the jar 👍🏼. I just bought a set of these to play with. I decided to order some of the water mixable paint thinner because I heard that it won’t change the colors like water will and it is formulated to work well with the paint.
omg thank you for this video! I was making my own and had no idea what tool i needed to set in the t-nut so i just resorted to carving a little mote for the T part of the nut. Also drilling into the plastic hinge wasn't something i thought about to make the easel close shut lol i wish i had known that earlier before buying hinges that has the tension screws on the sides
Thank you! So glad you found the video helpful.
Thank you for the tips and encouragement.
Thank you for sharing an easy, affordable DO IT YOURSELF plein aire work station for watercolor using a minimum of tools and supplies that most people have on hand and can readily find at any local hardware store.
Thank you! It is nice to know the video was helpful. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for the feedback.
I’m loving the intro
Thanks!
This is a phenomenal video! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
This looks fun but i am pretty sure i'll manage to injure myself while carving 😂
Lol. 😄Yes it is fun, but safety first! I wear a glove on the hand that holds the wood and leather protectors on the thumb and two fingers of my carving hand. There is also a protective tape (that sticks to itself) that you can use to wrap fingers. Also never have your fingers in front of the cutting edge of the knife. Oh, and always use a sharp knife, a dull knife causes most injuries. Thank you for watching.
great video as always laura, it looks very nice
Thank you!

Laura, thank you for the video, just found your channel. I have painful thumbs as well, but willing to try this.

Which is best to color anime art , gouache or alchohol markers ?
That is more of a personal choice. Also may depends on subject size - character or whole scene. I like drawing characters with the markers but if I want to create an entire scene I would use the gouache. I did a video using alcohol makers to draw the bus stop scene in My Neighbor Totoro. Loved using the markers but not on the background...of course now they have wide markers that would work better. Here is a link to that video if you wanted to take a look. th-cam.com/video/VilV6nRqlao/w-d-xo.html
Are you sure that’s Balsa? It appears to be basswood. Either way, good job!
Lol, oops. Yes of course it is basswood...don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for catching the mistake.
OMG, I even said it in the video, lol. It's basswood not balsa.
No worries, I just found your channel and thought I’d give you a heads up. Great job on the carving!
Thank you! I will use balsa for models when I do set designs and I guess it just got stuck in my head on that day. Thanks for taking the time to point it out to me.@@hmk946
JFI - I think Ian does - light grey tombow pen, then uses watercolour paint, then goes in with ink pen for detail after the paints dried, it really loosens up the drawing if you do it in that order. X
This is really lovely, thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you!
It was fantastic! Could you tell in the next video the names of colour which you mix them? Thanks
Thank you, and yes , I can list colours next time.
I couldn't open that bottle either!! Tempted to write to W&N...grrr
great learning example for Ian's technique, thank you for showing🙂
Thank you!
Why must we paint the same things over and over when oil painting. Its gotta be my #1 vice with oil painting in general. It's tedious... oil painting, at times!! Especially on a complex piece.
great job
Thank you!
Looks like fun and your instructions are clear and thorough. Thanks for sharing this. I imagine people can do all kinds of things with this printing technique, from wedding invitations to posters and fun birthday cards.
This is a pretty basic print aimed at beginners (like me, lol). People who do a lot of work with lino-cut can do incredible artwork for all kinds of things.
This is so cool!
Thanks!
Love it. New knives are fun
So Cute… As usual, very concise description of your process 👍

Hi Laura. I've been carving fruit tree branches for a few years. Just carved a spoon and two letter openers out of branches. I must have gotten your video because I was thinking about carving a design in one of the handles.
Hi Dan, I'm new to carving wood. I've only ever carved a rooster from a branch/twig and then this penguin from balsa. I admire people who can do this art form! Thanks for watching!
@@LaurasArtBasement Laura I started carving a few years ago out of boredom, and to see if I could make anything. So far I have carved mostly spoons, but also letter openers, and a few walking sticks. Check out my latest under my name at Flickr.
Wow
Hi Laura. You did a great job, and better than my first attempt with a better branch too lol. I don't think every one has to get curls in the tail, and though it looks nice yours looks nice too. I am not a great whittler, but every now and then something amazing finds its way out of the wood I'm whittling and despite my best efforts to ruin it, it emerges triumphant. X
Thank you!
Don't worry about one leg being shorter...Just name him, Eilene... Your other knife looks to be a Solingen #58...Great steel in that blade. Should be able to sharpen it enough to shave the hair off a gnats legs
Lol, and thanks for the info about the knife.
