Vtubing as a Career vs Job vs Hobby (AKA a conversation about aspirations with a teacher)
Hiya, I’m Iiji, and today I wanna chat with y'all about your aspirations. What role does vtubing fall into in your life, and is that the role you want it to take? Is that feasible for you right now? I've had conversations like these with my students MANY times because they've never had someone tell them that it's OK to not want a career, or to take an easy job so they can put more time into what they're passionate about.
This is an odd one as far as my videos are concerned, but I hope you'll give it a watch anyways. We'll be back to the usual soon. (:
And congrats Heavenly Father for going full time! Goodluck man!

I'm glad that I finally had a chance to watch through all of this! You did a great job getting your points across. This way of thinking about VTubing, like any artistic space, is super helpful. I realized a while back that I may not be cut out for being a VTuber as a career (streaming, at least), but I do know that I want to solve problems for other people. Instead: I've kind of turned that into a career as a result of the kind of vocation I'm naturally drawn to (helping people overcome problems)! The results of that on other peoples' streams makes it all worth it, and that inspires me to do better, too. The friction that happens when people attempt to do content creation full-time without it truly being their calling (yet) really hurts to see. It's also difficult to see friends that can absolutely turn this into their sole full-time effort writing that off as a "job". Artists (especially the starving ones) seem to have a common anxiety that permeates their lives, mostly involving being worried if they're "good enough" at what they do. I might be spitballing a little too much here, but I personally think that comes down to attempting to shove themselves into a box doing what they love as a job without fully realizing that they've hurt their own passion, or attempting to chase a dream as part of a vocation that's actually slightly mis-matched from what they thought they were doing. I saw that a lot in art school, but that angst has persisted as a problem well after I graduated for most of my friends. Many of my old classmates have fallen out of love with their passions as a result. VTubing as a career can be complicated, tech-heavy, and requires a ton of support from other creators for most people to keep it up full-time. It feels like subversion of the classic Marshall Mcluhan "the medium is the message" mode of media production and consumption (It's not "hot" media, it's spicy!), but that creates some really heavy expectations for the creators that stay in this space, whether self-imposed or created by their communities. TLDR: I'm glad to see another creator thinking more about "why" people give VTubing a shot. I hope that more people see this video and take the time to really listen about it! Good looks, providing the source for your inspiration. I might dive into that mode of thinking a bit more, myself. Thank you so much for making another awesome video!

streaming as a career is a fool's errand. no one should stream full time. even if you make crazy money from it, it isn't a good long term thing. twitch itself is dying, perhaps showing that streaming just isn't a good business model for anyone

Honestly thank you for this. I always felt so bad that I had to keep vtubing as a hobby cuz my main job pays too well for me to give up, but also didn't have the time or energy to go as hard into marketing myself and streaming constantly to actually make a job or career out of. I've actually had to (at least temporarily, hopefully) give up on streaming entirely because my job has been stressing me out, I was getting tired of always falling back into the headspace that I HAD to grow, and in general seeing the low view count always got my depression going real bad and it was getting unhealthy... It still sometimes feels like I 'failed' and it can be hard to remind myself that it was a hobby and that's ok.

Asian here, this is my opinion: The creator of this video doesn't seem to understand that these companies aim to appeal to a mainstream audience rather than a specific group of people. Their opinions are biased toward what they think is good design. I don't understand why the creator criticized unrealistic body proportions, but then later at 2:40, they said that this 'hyperstylized' look gets a pass because it's "meant" to be like that. The anime style can already be considered hyperstylized, as many of its defining traits are unrealistic (such as small necks, big eyes, and hair that is made of shapes rather than individual strands, etc.) So, what's the issue with long torsos/small feet? It's also a stylization. Westerners seem to have a double standard; if a character is made chubby or with freckles and stubby arms/legs, it's considered good 'stylization,' but if a character is too tall and slender, it's deemed as bad anatomy. Why isn't that considered stylization as well? Asian culture differs significantly from the West; Asians are typically much skinnier compared to Westerners, so the ideal body type aesthetic tends to be very lean, slender, and tall. If you ask Asians about their ideal type, it's usually a guy who's tall and slender with lean muscle but not too bulky, or a slender woman with a small waist. That is the beauty standard in Asia. And of course, since these companies are based in Asia, they will try to appeal to the aesthetic Asians like. That's why I find it very pretentious that the creator of this video critiques the work of industry professionals as if they don't know what they are doing. Furthermore, all this criticism seems very subjective and biased. It's the same with the clothing; it's made to be very detailed and realistic to be eye-catching and nice to look at, but faces are kept simple to avoid them from looking strange. Your example of what's good at 4:59 looks very uncanny and would not appeal to a wide mainstream audience. I'm sure the artist who made that is very talented, but the design is just not something that would be marketable. I am certain that these companies could make vtubers with average human proportions if they wanted to, but that wouldn't have as much appeal to audiences in asia. I find it very strange that this person's argument essentially comes down to their biased opinion of what is "good" and "bad" stylization. They define what is and isn't stylization, when in reality, anything that isn't realism is already stylized.

gearing up to step into the scene and this video came at a perfect time. Ive been trying to vectorized my logo and found many design flaws so stumbling across this video helped me go back to push the design and I wound up finding something I like 10x better so TY!

To be honest some day I wish I could make my own oc and be a Vtuber of my OC (I'm a Girl but Genderfluid. I prefer he/him and would love to be my OC for a day ;3) My male OC is so silly I just would make him wear a blank sweater, jeans, etc. He is a plain guy or I can mix his og au (Dragons) and make him a dragon hybrid :33

This was a great video and very informative. As someone who very recently went the other direction from "IRL" streaming to Vtubing for personal and private reasons, it was super overwhelming to get started. I love the just get into it mentality though and have been just livestreaming and posting my usual content using my Avatar and while it's too soon to see any kind of impact I am really enjoying the journey.
