This performance was part of Bernstein's video cycle of the complete Mahler symphonies. The video of this performance, complete, is on TH-cam. Obviously Bradley Cooper studied that video to recreate the performance and Bernstein's unique conducting style for the movie. One should watch that video for it truly is a thrilling performance. I was lucky enough to see Bernstein conduct the Mahler Second with the New York Philharmonic several times between 1973 and 1989. His last 1989 performance was among my greatest concert hall experiences. My very emotional response to seeing that performance can be read about in my recently published book "Reflections from the Audience."

I think these tragedies would better fit in his 9th Symphony. 1st movement is his heart disease, 2nd movement is his wife cheating on him, 3rd movement is his firing from Vienna and 4th movement is his departure to heavens with his daughter.

Mahler like Tchaikovsky liked to use unconventional instruments, Tchaikovsky used the canon (or more accurately the siege artillery), Mahler the hammer. I for one want to hear the 1812 overture played with the Iowas 9 mark 7 guns as the instruments. I love unconventional instruments
