(S-5 Ep-1) Shoestring Shipyard Update (June 18th - 2024) #Boatbuilding #Sailboat #Backyard #Boat

I realize it has been a very long time since I’ve published a video on his channel. I apologize for that. I hope this video answers many of the questions I’ve received via email. I hope to be more active this season with video production, however the building of my daughter’s tiny house (build videos on my Downeast Thunder Creations TH-cam channel) has priority right now.

(S-4 Ep-3) 30 July 23 Shoestring Shipyard Update
มุมมอง 123ปีที่แล้ว
Here it is Sunday, July 30th, 2023 and I have not made any progress since my last video posted the beginning of May 2023. There are many reasons and causes for this but the fact remains that progress came to a complete halt! I have quite a bit of prep work to do before I can even begin to resume work on S/V OohRah and it appears a bit overwhelming to an old guy like me. Nonetheless, I need to s...

The “Wintah” weather has finally left us behind in Downeast Maine, and it’s time to get back to work outside. It’s still too cold for using epoxy resins and most other marine adhesives but it’s perfect for getting a shelter back up over the boat in preparation to resume boat building. I purchased a new shelter this year and have begun to build the structure. Be had a big Nor’easter storm though...

Nothing. It's sitting and waiting on me to get back to it. I've has some entertaining thoughts about how to refurbish it but with "wintah" setting in here in Maine and several surgeries scheduled over the next few months, it won't be till next "summah" before I do anything with it. 👍👍👍

Honestly, I don't remember. That project took place quite some time ago. I do remember visting the Mantus and Rocna websites and looking at their drawings with dimensions to help determine the sizes and angles used in making my anchor. Sorry I can't be of more help. 👍👍👍

Just a couple tips to you, you could have done this using a 4-in elbow and then your opening would be larger, and a 4-in elbow will fit around the outside of that flange. Those flanges are designed to have a piece of 3-in glue into them or a piece of 4-in glue on the outside of them. Couple other tips, You can get a flange that turns and then you could have glued the elbow on and then you could buy a fitting clean out that would shove into the elbow for inclement weather. Another note is that you could get a union flange and mounted inside the box glue a 4-in elbow to the outside of it and then you would have a vent that would never fall off and would still pivot. On top of that you could take that fit and clean out and you could glue it in and then all you'd have to do is screw the cap on In bad weather. Personally, I just made a couple doorades by 3D printing the whole thing. About $20 in petg plastic. I know they probably won't last as long as nylon or ASA, so I will reprint the tops in ASA in the future.

Will do! Right now we are experiencing a heat wave (very unusual for us). Yesterday the high temp made it just over 100 degrees and the weather forecast calls for higher temps today. Humidity was also very high (83 percent yesterday). I'm trying to stay inside today - not used to this kind of heat! 👍👍👍

Hey Paul! It doesn't take long for things to get out of hand especially when you're working mostly alone. I just read that ticks hate Castile soap. I didn't know this when I switched over to bathing my dogs with it but they haven't had a tick this year. My Shih Tzu loves to dig big holes and lie in them so he's a tick magnet. Sounds like you've already got your plate full for the summer already without your projects. I still have your yacht club info on file. I've hung onto it because I plan to join when I finally get back to Maine and it looks like that's going to be soon. Been a very long road. YAY! Thanks for the update! Love the mugs! BTW! I've seen some commercial dollies that are fully adjustable without taking them apart, and fancy DIY ones that grip the material automatically, but frankly given that I'm only going to need to move sheet material occasionally (a couple of those occasions being very soon) and need to change the size of material I'm dealing with even more rarely, this looks like a pretty well perfect solution for my needs. Quick to make, versatile enough and since I probably have all the plywood needed in my scrap bin, cheap enough to be worth it even if I just use it a few times.

I last saw Jeff at his 25th wedding anniversary in the beginning of July. He seems to be doing well in spite of his health issues. It was a matter of convenience (for me). There are very long periods of time between opportunities to check the boat and there is no one to pump it out. Eventually, when I get caught up with my back log of ongoing projects, this boat will undergo a major redesign and modification, making such holes minor in comparison. The holes I drilled allow the boat to no longer fill up inside while it sits on the trailer outside over a long stretch of time. It's a very old boat with many places that allow water intrusion and I don't have time to tend to it right now. Thanks for asking.

Well, it's your boat. You can drill the hole where ever you want it. No judgment about it. I own a mirage 5.5, mine is parked in a heavily wooded area so I've had similar issues in the past. But, just a tip: if you make sure the deck is angled back so the stern is lower then the bow you get far less water ingress. Even with a clogged scupper. I've had mine for more than a decade and have done alot of work to it. If you ever want to compare notes just send me a message. Happy to discuss the topic with you.

Mine came from a bunch of large size, homemade boat stands that were given to me. You can get them through Fastenal but they are very expensive from them.

I did exactly the same thing last fall. Bought a cheapo greenhouse to put over my boat to work under - similar thin poles but at least a decent semi-transparent cover for light. I thought as long as I was on top of shaking off the snow this winter I could get the tent through to spring. One bomb cyclone later meant pulling the boat from under the tangled mess heavy with wet snow and getting a quickie tarp over it (how it usually spends the winter). Definitely false economy. Never making that mistake again!

Wow! Sorry to learn of your loss. I'm thinking I should have gone with one of those Versa Tube, portable steel carports and then add steel roofing panels to the sides. The cost would have been at least 4 times more but worth it in the end. 👍👍👍
