Can we prove that God exists?
What scientific proofs and mathematical proofs cannot do is what philosophical proofs can do with 100% certainty. Let me explain how.

Science under the Miscroscope
มุมมอง 18911 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this book, science has its say. But not with the pretension that science has the last word. We want to look beyond the scientific nose. And for that you need a philosophical analysis. That amounts to putting science under “the microscope of philosophy.”

How God Made Earth Our Home
มุมมอง 2.1K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Instead of the vaunted "randomness" of our immense universe, scientists have recently discovered indisputable patterns in the structures of matter and energy. Over the eons, these distinctive patterns drove the universe inexorably toward formation of the Earth as what we experience it to be: our secure, exceptional, and singularly welcoming home.

Transforming Data with a LogNormal Distribution
มุมมอง 75K7 ปีที่แล้ว
If your values are not normally distributed but have a lognormal distribution, you may want to transform them into a normally distributed data set, so you can apply regular statistical techniques, such as significance testing and determining confidence or prediction limits. Here is how to do that.

Simulation of Holism and Reductionism
มุมมอง 1.1K7 ปีที่แล้ว
Simply put, reductionism promotes breaking things down in science, to simplify them for further study, whereas holism tries to put things back together again so we see them in their context. In this video, we use a simple simulation that breaks a word apart and then puts the letters back together in a random way until we reach the original setting.

Dear Dr Verschuuren. Thank you for such excelent and didactical tutorial. My issues are on a sinus voltage & current measuring series, but with only 20 values per cycle (voltage and current of the same phase), due to an low 1200 Sample/s rate, over a 90s @ 60 Hz measuring window. Now I need to determine an angular phase difference (phi) between a voltage senoid and its current senoid, to calculate [cos phi] of this angular difference (the result makes the power factor, either advanced or delayed). So with only 20 values recorded, a gross error in cos phi will be produced, where an accurate 2nd decimal cipher shall be produced. Given that a whole cycle is 360°, how can I interpolate within the sinus function to get four to ten times more values, in order to have better accuracy on each zero crossing point (voltage and current), to have the said difference (phi)? I guess this is a non-linear, function & amplitude-conditioned interpolation. Thank you in advance S. C. Kirschstein [sc.kirschstein@gmail.com]

The distributional parameters are not preserved. If X and Z are iid Normal (10,2), and Y=rX + SQRT(1-r^2)Z where r is the target correlation, then Y is effectively a weighted average of X and Z, each of which have a mean of 10. But the weights sum to more than 1, so the mean of Y will always be more than 10. For example, suppose that r=1/2. Then SQRT (1-r^2) is the square root of 1/2, which is SQRT(2)/2, which is about 0.707. Then the sum of the "weights" is 0.5+0.707 = 1.207, and Y will "overshoot" by 20.7%, on average. To make this work, all of the Y values would have to be multiplied by 1/(1+SQRT(1-r^2)).

Can you elaborate on why the correction factor is needed and the motive? I found through a simulation that even with your correction factor, the correlation coefficient still over(under)shoots by +/-35%-50%. Basically, I simulated 2 scenarios and ran 50 trials whereby the 1st is the correlation equation as presented in the video and the 2nd is by correcting each and all Y values with your correction factor. And in my view, I don't think you should modify the correlation equation Y by your 'corrected' factor since it relates to matrices at the end of the day.

In the last part of the video, I believe the transpose on the Cholesky decomposition is not needed and would provide you with better results that more closely resemble the original correlation matrix. Can someone please check?

A warning to anyone who stumbles across this like I did: Lookup Fields in tables of your Access Database are evil. First, any query that tries to order the table data by that company name will not work, because the underlying value isn't the name, but instead a CompanyID number. Nor will any queries that use a company name in that field as a criteria. Second, if a filter is applied to the combobox as is created in this form, the persistent filter effect of Access may save that to the underlying query in the table and the next time the form is opened there will be a prompt for the value which cannot be provided, thus creating an error. And finally, any Access database that has Lookup Fields in tables cannot be upsized to, or queried by, any other database management engine without first removing all the lookup fields because no other engines use or understand them. Think very carefully before implementing any solution that uses Lookup Fields in tables in your Access database.

What if I want to populate RaceGroup column when Country Column is typed the country or when imported or appended data. Does this method applies or I have to use Dlookup afterupdate? I have the list of Countries and related Race-Group or Nationality. I could make combo box which we have. But the goal is to avoid clicking to much on combos to select the country. We want to avoid typing. Example when I import or append many rows with patients and countries. So after the importation or appending I want to see the country column and nationality or Race-Group to be populated. When you have too many columns and hundreds of rows you don't want to keep clicking on combo to drop down, etc. It's a lot stress on the hand for unnecessary repetitive tasks.
