Obito was saved by Madara after the cave in and Obito thought Kakashi killed Rin and so Obito saw the world differently and became known as Tobi.

... Its already been confirmed that Tobi IS Obito... Chapter 600 of the Naruto Manga.... and when he fought the 4th.. That was madara posing as Tobi and then when he died, Obito took his place as Tobi to achieve his own goals.
