The Abel Rove. Is this cork drag, salt and freshwater fly fishing reel the best in the industry?
Anthony breaks down the Abel Rove to examine why this might just be the ultimate "desert island" fly reel. No compromise was made in the design, materials or fit and finish of this exquisite reel. Anthony also explains why you might want a traditional cork drag, draw-bar style fly reel over its fully sealed brothers. This must watch video is full of insight on fly reel design itself.

Most "complete" video I've ever watched, thanks.
Great tips on tying the Squirmy. Also, very informative on fishing the Swift. Thank you for sharing the information.
Awesome video. Thank you Anthony!
This was fantastic! Swift can be a humbling place. Thank you!
Nice fly, the eyes are backwards 👊🏽
Very nice tie. I'll twist a few up.
Nice tie Anthony
Excellent as usual Anthony.
Ahrex. Tried almost all baskets. Ecoastal would be good if they wouldn’t have these totally stiff sticks!!!! The line tangles in them. Total nonsense at a total insane price on top! Didn’t like it at all!
This is an AWESOME video. Love the physical example and explanation of the drag stack and how the waterproofness works, rather than the generic “it’s sealed”.
May you show to us how to clean drag on steel fin vario 120 reel, please? Thank you
My only issue is the loop being caught in the rings but after initially pulling the line out of the guides that is no longer an issue since I only have to do it once per fishing session.
Pat Cohen´s flies are out of this world!
Mumblers
Thanks. Very informative and helpful.
I still have my Billy Pate, and a spare spool, given to me by Ted when I was doing features for various fishing and outdoor magazines. I will not part with it even though now I am only fishing for myself. It gets used for bass fishing around our coast here in England. It is such a well engineered reel.
100 bucks for a piece of plastic. Wow i wonder what we are actually getting in terms of value on all the other gear from this companies. I got an Orvis Clearwater rod,but fell out during fishing, the inside was glued to the blank with cardboard,no help from customers service i have glued it my self with epoxy.
i started getting my gear from maxcatchfishing, really good pricing and decent quality. now I need a stripping basket and don't want to pay these ridiculous prices for plastic either haha
@@3runjosh i know, right? I made mine from some stuf out of Chinese pet shop, like some little sleep basket and a toy for paws or something and it works great, it costed less than 10 $ all together
Would love more "vintage reel day videos," or more in-depth looks at other reels/ rods!
Check out the Take basket, made from flexible material. Super comfy and will outlast any of these. Can be drilled easily to add pegs (e.g. flexi stripper pegs)
Danielsson Control is a great alternative, if not better than the Billy Pate (still a great reel, I have the Bonefish). Less expensive, sealed (washers & carbon discs) drag, has a crazy engineered brake, you can switch the hand and it's easily available.
Your videos are all very good. You definitely know your stuff and can explain it clearly.
I always cut them off and always will. Nothing to do with the strength, it's the ugly lump at the end of the line. I nail knot to the end with a tapered mono leader and connect a tippet to that. That provides a smooth set of connections and transfer of power along the line and very little to get snagged on rings.
100% pure all american beef
The loop just gets in the way, clunky at least for me.
True legends. Thanks for the upload.
Awesome review. Thanks!
I'm new in the game.. and Bought a 3wt rod.. what reel would you recommend to me.. a large arbor or the classic?
Thanks for sharing
I had had my Orvis for about 25 years , use a bunge cord , and re glassed 2 of the corners with plastic JB weld.
Thanks for the video, my wife got me a 2.5 in gold international and I use it all the time. It has caught Stripers, blues, fluke, tarpon, snook, trout/ weakfish, jacks , largemouth and peacock bass. The only thing that I have changed was I cracked the handle, took one off an old spinning reel, used a straw as a spacer and now it has a power handle. Left it on roof once, drove 20 minutes to boat, probable got ran over and was still there on the side of the road and it worked just fine. People ask about it quite often and are shocked Penn made a fly reel. Cheers
I've gone back and forth but right now, I'm leaving the loop on. All the talk about a hinge is not true.
Excellent video
he's the man
Simon's the man!
with trout, my issue with welded loops was about hanging up in the guides and, most importantly, the energy transfer from the line to the leader while casting. i’ve found the needle nail knot to be strong enough for my trout fishing and to cast more smoothly and present the leader/fly more predictably and delicately. I use it with salmon and steelhead too, and it’s never let me down, but i can’t claim the same benefits as with trout. i think the best things about rigging with loops is twofold-it is convenient and easy. But neither aspect makes a lick of difference when trying to present the fly well to trout. i could see that loops would be great in the salt where delicate deliveries are less key to success and your leader never runs into your guides?
Very cool looking sand eel. Thanks for showing such on efficient method for apply the resin. Doing it with epoxy was such a pain. When tying epoxy sand eels, I used to use yellowish olive bucktail for the layer where you use the Krystal Flash and then top the eel with 3-5 peacock herls to imitate the darker upper body. I think the herl would also work nicely on this version. I wonder if you think it would make sense to add a layer of heavy tying thread or cotton thread to thicken the body before applying the body braid so you didn’t have to use so many layers of braid?
You can. But the braid is very inexpensive and lays down very easily and evenly. I like to streamline the process the best i can with as few materials as possible. Using all braid also allows me to improvise on how i want the body to look as I'm going along. Im sure the peacock herl would look great here, I run into a lot of bluefish and I find the krystal flash holds up pretty well to their teeth, it's also the reason i chose the synthetic bucktail over the real thing for this particular pattern. Im glad you are finding this resin method helpful. Once you get the hang of shaping it with the bodkin it makes tying with the resin fun instead of a dreaded final step.
I still have my pulse 9plus. Rarely used anymore but still works great. Bought it in 2011 or 2013. Can’t remember
Appreciate that the video wasn't sped up. What I learned is to be more patient in spreading the resin. Excellent description of each step. Thanks
Rewatching I see something else you are doing to contr\ol the UV glue. You use the needle point to drag the glue to where you want it. I've been using the side of the needle like a knife blade to butter the glue. But the glue was frustrating to control Using the point is much better.
Another cool pattern Anthony. I guess I'll be in for more bodi braid, I have to try these out.
After armageddon all that will remain is cockroaches and Penn International fly reels
Perfect timing finding this , I’ve been looking at getting one of these . Thanks for sharing
this is nice to see, so much better than the "reviews" where it's a guy casting a shooting head in a carpark..
I had. 5+ finatic that got water in the drag. It seized up after sitting a few months. Hatch sent me paid overnight postage and upgraded all my gen 1’s to gen 2 components for free. Got them back in under 5 days. I’m bummed I had a failure, but absolutely loved how they stood behind their product.
This has got to be the most underrated fly reel clips on YT! Usually when the topic of fly reel drag comes up, we get very generic answers and footage around the topic of sealing. It was fascinating to see how a mid range reel deals with sealing compared to the high end stuff. Thank you for sharing, and well explained. Growing up and living in SA, I fish Shilton reels (SL series for Salt and their CR in the Fresh). The CR in particular is probably the most popular high-end freshwater reel here for Trout CR2, and the CR3/4 for our indigenous Yellowfish. At this point it feels like sealed drags are just a marketing/sales gimmick. Apart from a few of the very top end reels, water eventually finds its way in. Just about all of us fish Shilton SLs here with the occasional Tibor or Abel corks, being at the tip of Africa even a failure in “civilization” potentially means shipping a reel back to the US and Months of waiting. The corks are soo simple to service and look after, the Shilton SLs and newer SR series truly are weapons that never fail. I hope this clip gets more views with time, thanks again Anthony from South Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks tons for your insights and overviews of various stripping baskets. Awesome.
I love factory loops. Kelly Gallop and Flip Pallot insist on amputating them. Then they put on a small section of heavy mono nail knotted to the end of the fly line. Then they tie a perfection loop in the mono and loop to loop the leader. Looks awkward. Use the factory loop.
Sometimes the loop to loop connection can cause hinging. “ Sometimes “ if so a nail knot would be better for laying the line out.
Often people don’t tighten the handshake knot enough, should be closed completely and flattened. I use home-made blood knot leaders with 30 lb. butt section of Maxima (25 lb. for 3 weights or lighter). Both of these solutions will significantly reduce hinging, and no loss in energy transfer. Maxima chameleon is much stiffer than most store-bought leaders, so it matches both diameter and stiffness of the fly line. And, the step down leader formulas lay down the leader and line on the water just fine. Most store bought leaders suck, both in durability and the taper which is too abrupt. Also, people forget the loop has the core of the line running through it, so even if the plastic coating gets worn through over time, the core is still there holding it. Not sure why strength is an issue because this connection should always be stronger than your tippet. Make sure handshake knot is tight, don’t use a leader loop that is too small in diameter, and you can catch hundreds of fish before you would ever notice any wear. You can also make a new welded loop easily, with shrink tubing and a lighter or heat gun, so repair is easy.
My issue has never been the welded loop coming apart but rather the mono in the butt section digging into the fly line at the loop to loop connection to the point where I don't trust it. I generally use 8 weight lines and 25 pound monofilament butt section on my leaders.
never had one break either
