Larry Jon Wilson, The Complete Ballad of Handy Mackey.wmv

Because it's not politically correct in these days the 'complete' Ballad of Handy Mackey is not often heard. Larry Jon wrote this from the perspective of a slave during the War Between The States. It has a message of freedom.

Here Comes That Rainbow Again.wmv
มุมมอง 16K13 ปีที่แล้ว
Larry Jon Wilson does the best cover of this Kris Kristofferson song I've ever heard. As he used to like to say, "I Wilsonized it quite a bit." It was inspired by a John Steinbeck novel. - Larry Jon was born near the banks of the Ohoopee River in Emanuel County, GA where his ancesters lived and loved and made babies for generations, along with mine.

I would say Kris heard Larry Jon's version . Kristofferson described Karry Jon as having a voice " Like a Cannonball..". I would say that is a very apt. Description

wow!! Best version YET imo. To me, like a gift sent from heaven is better than ain't it just like a human. I do not like the word human BECAUSE I know what it originally meant. Like a gift sent from heaven, here comes that Rainbow again.

The use of the word "N-----" is always potentially troubling when it comes out of the mouth of a white man. However, here, the great Larry Jon Wilson uses it to tell a tale of a slave gleefully anticipating the end of the Civil War and the defeat of the South and the coming of his own freedom. The edited "Ballad of Handy Mackey" is a beautiful song on its' own and a favourite of mine. I say all of this, but, truly, defer to black people on whether they find this version offensive. Though, I must say, I am very happy that you uploaded this clip.

I came all the way from the future to tell you to shut up. What a fantastic non-opinion. If you’re not so sure if it’s offensive, how about stop bringing it up. Worst kind of person.

Augusta Georgia in the '70's. I was a night manager at Hops Grain and Barley, a local downtown beer bar. We had many business folks who would come in after work and enjoy a cold beer and snacks. I remember this one evening, Larry Jon was enjoying some company with friends and it was last call. Closing time. I checked on him and a woman that was sitting beside him. Larry Jon asked me where I was headed after closing up. I said nothing special planned. He said, Come join me and this lady and we will play guitar and sing. So we locked the doors, drove up Walton Way to an abandoned gas station. There, Larry Jon got his guitar and sang songs well into the wee hours of the morning. What a pleasure to listen to this talented man. He was gifted. The hours passed by. And then, the sky was beginning to get light. I had a VIP seat on that summers night. What a delight to have been a part of that performance. God Bless you Larry Jon Wilson. Thanks for the sweet memories.
