    I Love the album , it’s a grower. I’m sure Ian is giving an honest performance in the studio with no “help”. He always sings in tune and I’m sure I read somewhere that he doesn’t even bother doing lots of takes. Looking forward to part two ! 👌🏻👍🏻

    Another winner. Best album, since Whoosh. It's interesting, I can hear the Steve Morse era in this album. He did such a great job sculpting their modern sound into the Autumn years. Looking forward to a stimulating part two.

    'Show Me' is very 'Gillan' band/Purpendicular. Keyboards sound like Colin Towns. ★★★½ 'A Bit on the Side' = Ted the Mechanic/Rosa's Cantina & Zero the Hero. ★★★½ 'Sharp Shooter' - the riff is very Abandon. Don's solo is very Colin Towns again. ★★★★ 'Portable Door' - Classic DP Shuffle (Pictures of Home, Strange Kind of Woman, Mean Streak). ★★★★ 'Old Fangled Thing' - Ian Paice nuff said. No One Came vocal delivery. ★★★½ 'If I were you' - It's growing on me. Simon's sound hints at 'Sometimes I feel Like Screaming'. ★★½ 'Pictures of you' - I'm going around humming the chorus which is the best part + the outro is cool. ★★★

    Listening to you review this and other Albums makes me think you don't really like Ritchie or understand him. I Totally disagree with alot of your views and ratings. The Album cover is Fantastic. Sixteenth century Greensleeves.Temple of the King,Catch the Rainbow,Still I'm Sad are All 5s.Self Portrait is a 4.5. Snakecharmer would be a 5 but I don't like Ronnie's vocals and feel it would be better as another instrumental. I like Man on the silver mountain but feel it should hit harder-Great riff and Solo-a 4.5. Black sheep of the Family again could hit harder-a 3. (The new version with Ronnie Romero is much better!) The only track I don't like too much is If you don't like Rock and Roll which does sound like an Elf inspired song. I much prefer this Albumt to Rising although Tarot woman and Stargazer are Fantastic too. (Catch the Rainbow has never been played live by Blackmores Night,although I wish they would). (I have Always thought if Ritchie used some of his ideas on this album for Stormbringer it would have made a Fantastic Album-still one of my faourite Deep Purple albums.)

    • @TheDeepPurplePodcast
      @TheDeepPurplePodcast 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, everyone has different tastes and is exposed to things at different times. I don't think it's fair to say we don't like or understand Ritchie. We love Ritchie! To be fair, who really understands him? I don't really remember what we said about the individual songs but everyone's tastes are different. This is a reason we were hesitant to even do ratings since everyone's will vary. Songs on this album for me may be in the 3-4.5 range. For you, they're 4.5-5. My wife? Probably 1-2.5. 🙂 I like this album a lot, I think it just isn't as cohesive (overall) as future Rainbow releases, likely due to the short-lived nature of the lineup. Short-lived even by Rainbow standards!

    I STRONGLY DISAGREE with almost everything you said about this album. It is probably my Favourite Rainbow Album along with Bent out of shape. I especially like Insatiable. It is Unique,and I Love the way Ritchie solos throughout. It is one of those tracks that I could listen to over and over again. Favourites on this Album are Insatiable,Wolf to the Moon( A great opener),Black Masquerade,Silence,Ariel,Hall of the Mountain King and Still I'm Sad.The only track I don't particularly like is Stand and Fight,which is OK,but I'm not a fan of Harmonica. The whole band is great and the Live shows were Awesome. I like the way the riff in Cold Hearted woman repeats but builds at the end.

    • @TheDeepPurplePodcast
      @TheDeepPurplePodcast 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Very fair! I remember this one resonating more with me when I first heard it but can't really say why it didn't hold up as well upon repeat listens. Certainly think all the musicians involved were top notch. Doogie is a great singer as well!

    You forgot Reeves Gabrels! professor of noise at the university of Bowie! his presence on this really intrigues me because i just can't imagine him with Coverdale! edit: Well the first 3 tracks were really great, very Reeves! the rest was predictable, might have been ok normally but sounded flat because the opening salvo was so startling. the album needs resequencing and She Give Me should have been the single , that would have stopped Melody Maker laughing!

    Good job! I can think of a couple more: The film "Breaking the Waves", starring Emily Watson and Stellan Skarsgard, featured "Child In Time" in the trailer as well as in the movie. Netflix series "The Crown" had an episode where the Prince of Wales goes to a Welsh college to learn Welsh, and complains to some other students for playing their music too loudly. It's an obscure non-album track that was both a surprise and a joy to hear in context. Also, since you mentioned wrestling, "The Franchise" Shane Douglas used "Perfect Strangers" as his entrance music in ECW, then an altered version when he went to WCW.

    Great concept for a show! By the way, Jon Lord's daughter is at Hipgnosis Songs Fund and used to be at Concorde Music, both of which do a huge amount of sync work for feature films, TV and advertising. I am sure that helps get the DP work into good content situations and at least into directors' consideration more often, given that filmmakers will often try multiple tracks against a scene, usually once the film is edited, to see what fits.

    Still looking for the Smoke on the Whopper commercial. With Twister, it could just be the director knows Child in Time and wanted to use it and doesn't know the band well enough to use Stormbringer. It could have been a licensing issue, as well. They are different publishers so it could have been a cost issue. It also could have been a tempo preference.

    Nitpicker alert, sorry -- actually an opportunity for a plug: Just as Nick clarified that his band wasn't "Deep Purple", Glenn Hughes is out there as "Glenn Hughes". He's been celebrating the 50th anniversary of "Burn" by playing material from that album as well as "Stormbringer" and "Come Taste the Band" (and that one particular track from "Machine Head"). For a guy who's been through the wringer as he has, he really sounds amazing, especially since he's now into his 70s. He's got a great band with him -- the drummer is a real character -- and it's worth the price of admission for fans of that era. We were lucky in Dallas to get an extra bonus, "You Fool No One", thanks to Dallas's having been so supportive of Trapeze back in the day.

      I think I wasn't clear in how I stated it. I certainly didn't mean that either of them are calling themselves "Deep Purple" but merely that they're touring with the music FROM their mark or version of the band. I don't think I was very clear in the way I said it. Ash Sheehan is a BEAST!

      This is a great service! Thank you so much! I cut and pasted it into the description so it should add chaptures and "key moments." Thanks again, Jasur!

      @@TheDeepPurplePodcast No problem! Although it seems the timecodes haven't integrated into the bar. I think you need to add "0:00" to the top of the list for youtube to detect them. So, something like: 0:00 Intro 0:28 Witty Banter etc

      @@jasurmakhkamov Hmm that doesn't seem to work. But it does show up in the Key Moments section!

    Smoke wasn't a regular in the setlist, even after the LPs release, until it took off on US radio. As for the setlist, I saw an interview some years ago where Ian Gillan said that he would prefer to play more newer numbers but, especially in america, the atmosphere dropped whenever they played the newer songs. He felt that the band was moving forward and continually producing new music and the setlist should represent this and some older songs should be phased out as regular pieces, although they would always have to play Smoke. A lot of the Morse material is either ignored or played for a single tour. Apart from Screaming (which was dropped for a number of tours) in the US they will play one, maybe two songs from the latest album the rest of the set is Perfect Strangers and the original MKII eras. In Europe and the UK things are better but they still only play a few morse-era songs. Personally I would have liked to have had a setlist of at least 50% Morse material with the rest made up a number of older songs that could be switched in an out. I also agree that a few farewell gigs with Morse, playing a full set of his songs would have been fantastic. A couple in the UK and a couple in the US would probably have been enough. Maybe even donating profits to cancer charities. Although I would suspect that if they did this there would be plenty idiots in the audience screaming for the old songs,

      Yes, of all the live performances I've seen, setlist is my only real complaint, though this show in particular had a great one!

    Great show! Looks like the guys had a real good time on stage... and they were playing so well! Have to say, of all the incarnations, the one featuring Jon Lord and Steve Morse has to be my favorite. What a natural interplay between the two of them. Especially love the atmospheric intro to When A Blind Man Cries. Once again: thanks Nate and Jon for bringing back some good memories!
