Ayers DS and Yamaha FG 500
มุมมอง 6K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Just had these two handy, not really a deliberate comparison, the DS is capo'd on the 2nd fret, and is new with solid mahogany b/s, the FG500 laminate jacaranda but 40 years played in!
Yamaha FG110 demo

Hi, this is the FG110 I am selling on ebay. Why is it when you finally decide to sell a guitar it suddenly sounds better than all the others?
Takamine EAN10 and AN15 comparison, very quick
มุมมอง 7K12 ปีที่แล้ว
.The first is a GS330S, then a AN15, then an EAN10 (with electric guts removed). Don't know why the GS got cut off at the beginning. Still gives an idea of the difference in tone of the EAN10 (mahogany back) and AN15 (rosewood back).
Yamaha FG336SB (after set up)
มุมมอง 20K12 ปีที่แล้ว
Same strings as earlier video. Full set up done: Adjust truss rod/ neck relief. fret dress/level/crown/polish. New bone nut. Lower/crown/polish saddle and ramp peg slots/ shave/polish bridge. Add ebony pins. Hoover out 35 years of dust... errr that's about it. Plays really nicely now, low action all the way up the neck, no buzzes. A great guitar.

A Yamaha FG336SB, before set up, just opened up the box. Old strings and needs a set up. Please see the 'after' video for sound comparison (coming soon).
Vintage V200NC guitar.MTS

The 14 fret version of the Vintage V200NC (pictures show a 12 fret version too). Solid cedar top, laminate mahogany back and sides. Nice little guitar, still a bit new sounding, very similar in dimensions (and sound) to the early '70s Yamaha FG75 folk guitar. Now sold. Playing here in open D tuning.

A quick demo of my Ayers DS. Solid sitka top, solid mahogany back and sides. Great guitar - I love its tone and fingerboard (bit wider at the nut than usual dreads). Strings are 6 month old D'Addario EXP13. Recorded with a Sony SR11 camera/ built in mic.

Ayers AS acoustic guitar, spruce top, mahogany back and sides, all solid. Lovely guitar.
Ayers JS (Gibson J45 clone)
มุมมอง 1.8K13 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an Ayers 'JS'. If it had Gibson on the headstock and J45 on the label, I'd believe it. I don't think Ayers make them any more, probably for copyright issues. It needed a proper set up from the shop but has played and sounded sweet since. A very worthy poor man's J45 :)
Contessa / Hohner 8 string conversion

Couldn't afford a real Irish bouzouki, so followed the conversion done by the luthier on www.frets.com . Turned out really well.

Incroyable yamaha fg140❤
❤🎉❤ very good sound
Thats a beautiful sound, so is that a real bone bone nut you put on it and how bout the saddle, reason i ask is cause i have one identical to it but it needs set up bad
Such sweet playing! Very nice!
I was kind of hoping he would give his opinion on his choice of the best. I just bought a FG-75 from Craigslist for 140 dollars. Its a 1975. I could have afforded something more expensive but after reading several positive reviews i decided what for? I'm really amazed that they could produce such quality instruments for the price. Around 300 dollars new adjusted for inflation. The action is a little high on the upper frets but i should be able to remedy that. I missed typed. Its a 1974.
Love the sound, love the playing!
What a lovely sounding guitar. Back before the 2008/9 worldwide financial meltdown I ran a small shop selling acoustic guitars, including Blueridge, Walden and Ayers guitars. These three makers produced guitars with tones which were rich, sonorous, complex and not overly bright. It's actually hard to find guitars with this calibre of tone nowadays, where almost every maker of acoutistic guitars makes them exceedingly bright and brittle, and these are not at all to my taste. Some vintage Gibson slope-shouldered dreanaughts and LG-0s have these same tonal characteristics of being rich and sonorous, and occasionally some Martins, but honestly my experience is very disheartening among guitars that most people can afford.

The 110 sounds the best sweet tone, highs sparkling and nice and warm mids perfect.
1055814 thats my serial # on my FG -140 I bought in 1970 in Newburgh NY, its my baby
Thanks for Ayers guitar th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTqs4btuvBtP-zCUQbtSjxoCuviy1u3s7?si=HQGfLvHoSukbMG7f
140 much better
Looking for solid top 1970s Yamaha. Which models have solid tops?
Aye, dats lovely, that is… I like the way the pickguard catches the light too
I got a Taiwan 75. Tone is great but it lacks volume. Does not quite fill my room like a 330 or other 000 size.
It's not mahogany is it
Spruce ply top and mahogany ply back and sides. 77-81 production years. Superior guitars for the money, if you can find one in decent condition with a straight neck.
The fg-140 is slightly much better sound, more bass and treble than the fg-500, try to listen it on headphones and you will hear the difference.
How can I get in contact? Gary (Ely)
This guy is an undiscovered superstar. Amazing chord progressions and playing.
Inspiring - not sure why you no longer post. Really enjoying your video’s. Thank you
all these om old fg series are all the same sounds this 110 is chip board laminate
I bought my fg500 in December 1972. My mom cosigned for the purchase. It has been the greatest guitar I've ever played, and I continue to enjoy it today. Fantastic tone, and playability!
Is this fingerpicked or with a pick?
I just picked one up , love it plays awesome
Amazing playing....amazing sound. I guess I am too invested in my multitude of high dollar Martin's, Furch, and Collings.... when one of these older Yamahas would be just perfect.
Yamaha fg150 rad with solid wood top guitar?
Is it 000 size of the guitar?
Love it!
Plugged in the 15 will win
i would never buy another laminated guitar ever, i have 4 and i wish i knew then what i know now, lamianted is cheap sounding
Hauntingly beautiful guitar playing, as always. Dude, when you coming back. We miss you.
You play awesome
Hi. It's been a long time since we've heard from you. Hope your doing well. As always, beautiful soothing music and playing. Would love to see you come back. Cheers.
Good guitar but😅😅😅
Great video demonstration. I am fixing up my old FG-75 (black label Taiwan '74). It was my first acoustic, can't remember how I got it but most likely from a pawn shop. It got a golf ball sized hole in the soundboard below the bridge. I have custom fit a spruce piece (Stewmac) and fixed the soundboard. I'm now slowly refinishing the guitar, just taking my time for the best result. I'm already getting excited as the guitar starts to look better and better! (it was down to bare wood when my dad pulled it out of a closet, forgot we still had it). When I was sanding the top and sides, it vibrated loudly and you can tell it just wants to sing. I'm looking forward to finishing the refinishing and stringing it up again.
I just bought a 1974 FG-75 for 140 dollars on Craigslist. I love it and am amazed that a quality instrument can be had so cheap. Your story reminds me of my first guitar which was a Gretsch Corvette solid body electric. I was 15 in 1971 and i decided to sand it down to bare wood and then apply oil. A close friend who was a prodigy professional musician saw what i was doing and about had a cow. He said it would ruin it. I have since decided he was wrong.
Man, we all miss you. Come back soon.
What is the tuning please?
I've been told my compositions r soothing. But when I want to soothe my ears, i love listening to your compositions. Love your music.
Just got a Fg110 it is very cool I am going to fix it up bone saddle and strings. Lower that action a bit.
What do you emphasise most on to form these playing habits? Beautiful.... I fingerpick and never really used a pick, and practice suggestions? What scales do you prefer, thanks.
The loveliest sweetest sounding guitar ever. N i listen to a lot of reviews. I've got n fg335 n i love it. Tuqs nut, bone saddle n buffalo bone bridge pins. Amazing guitars.
Which of those two do you prefer?
What strings are you using here? I have an FG-160 that had unchanged strings since possibly the 70's/80's that I fell in love with & wrote on for many years until I finally broke a string. I never found anything that returned it to its original glory. It sounded like an old Nick Drake album. If you have recommendations love to hear.
Love these old red lable Yamaha guitars. They still sound incredible.
I learned to play on a Red Label 75, ca. 1973. Took it everywhere with me. Wish I still had it.
Glad to see this video! i bought mine early 1978 and it's an old friend, still plays and sounds great!
I bought 1973 FG-160 a couple of months ago and it's one of the best acoustics I've ever played or heard. 49 years of aging does wonders to a wood instrument.
I love your originality, in the words of Nicola Tesla "I don't care they stole my ideas, I care they don't have any of their own." Good harmony in your voice reminds me of an artist from the garden state soundtrack I can't recall whom it is. Not the shins, it's the I could've been song if that helps.lol
There’s something very special about these old Yamahas. I recently bought a 1973 FG-160 and it has more character and tone than any acoustic I’ve owned or played before. I only bought it to clean up and resell but enjoyed playing it so much that I decided to keep it and now it’s my favorite. It responds as well to a light touch as a hard strum and sounds like a concert hall inside. That’s what 49 years of maturing will do to a well built guitar.
Same here!
I own fs311, fg75, fg313, fg303 and fg345, i collect all of them because i love the sound produce !!
Do you wanna sell fg-160? 🤣🤣
I have an FG-160 that my father bought used for my mother back in the late 70’s. I also have a red label FG-230 12-string that I love!
That's some top notch noodling there, my friend. The same mood as Carl Miner conjurs up. Love it.
