Chance, always a fun listen When will Milli Vanilli be reissued. The second one no one cared about Down to $22 in VMP but I am subscribed to Fuzz Club now. Reissues now come down to what a label can afford to get the rights to and also what will help the bottom line. Obscure albums are being picked up by people like Dillion and a host of others.
Haven’t heard of Fuzz Club. I’ll check it out! I actually donated a Milli Vanilli to someone who wanted one recently. Turns out I had more than enough copies. 😬
The German print of the Beatles first album is worth a good amount of money don’t sell your original copy keep them until you are in retirement then sell.

I’m psyched to be watching your show a lot more now, Cb! 👍
I like that sound of that!
Subs are duds… Subscriptions in music historically have not had great success. No one wants to be tied down to a commitment, especially if there is a fee to do so. But this also is an “audiophile” strategy. True limited editions only work with hiked prices and decreasing numbers sold to a smaller elite base. Companies, especially niche ones, are more than happy to do this if it will sustain. By now I hope no one is under the impression that most actually care about the consumer. Of course this is mainly speaking of audiophile labels. The boutique labels. The majors are a different ball of deadwax as far as how they see limited editions and what the quality is vs consumer acceptibility and ignorance (aka..mastering? what is that? Oh, ok (who cares weirdos)) Marketing… A business can market their audience all they want (which I agree is a good idea in theory); but licensing plays a huge role also. Yes, we all want Buckingham Nicks but does the artist? In a survey of AP customers how many do you think will name Led Zeppelin? Constrast that with say a more obscure band like Budgie. Do you think Chad will be able to do brand new masterings of Zeppelin? Do you think he would even consider Budgie? Yeah, no. So we see where what the consumer wants and reality is very different. Even Rhino’s access to Warner still shows limitations due to the various other factors (artists, lawyers etc etc) In 35 years of watching this as a consumer, over all it remains an old war horse game with a few bones thrown to the consumer. It gets to the point where we are thrilled to see Linkin Park for a bill? Well, that is just desperate now isn’t it? ;) Another example: VMP’s marketing to a hip hop audience has its faults. They do get a few titles that are desirable but all in all even the rather unique marketing of hip hop has shown they cannot pull a massive amount of classics. And at least with Columbia House you picked your titles. Never have understood this “Hey, try and guess what next months titles will be and pay us for what you have no idea will be coming out” philosophy. Oh an hopefully we will have that swap title in stock (not) if you don’t like the surprise titles. Not a sustainable subscription model imo. Reissues vs whatever…the acceptability factor… As far as reissues in general the collector is better served to diversify across the board. Look at many reissue labels and find the hidden gems. People focus alot on the big 2 (Mofi and AP) and miss alot of other worthy reissues. Do they always beat the originals? No. But do they beat a cd or streaming may be closer to the goal. One persons crap is anothers “different sounding”. Again, educating oneself on what to listen for and how to listen to is the foundation. Then you judge the degrees of acceptability in reissues. There was a time when many reissues were simply cookie cutter with masterings on vinyl that didn’t do much better than the mastering on old streaming. We can be more thankful now I believe that more engineers are contributing to reissues that do care about sound. Are their varying styles and tastes with each engineer? Sure. Does that mean they are perfect? No. Does it mean their work is bad sounding? Tell me what you mean specifically on each record that sounds bad and compared to what? What are the goals now of what is being brought out of a recording? I think it is closer to the truth that mastering engineers in general now try and utilize more “tech advancements” in order to reveal more detail. Remember mastering/cutting can only do so much. The trick is what eq changes go too far for some and which are simply different from what we have heard before. This has not changed. What I believe changes is swings and vaccilations in what changes with mastering habits. Again, what seems to be the emphasis now and has been for some time is detail, clarity, separation. Unfortunately tone will suffer at times due to eq changes to achieve this. Yet there are still engineers that recognize tonality as number one. And I never discount or depend upon one engineer to reach this balance on every reissue he or she does. Learn what you are listening for and whom to listen to before you purchase has always been my advice. Artifacts vs Sound.. In short, basically, Arnaldo is correct. In my usual yammering manner I would add… Coming from a collectors background initially and then later more focused upon sound, the two are not always mutually exclusive. While I am more focused upon getting the albums I love in the best sound possible and that I can afford, I also hold on to some of the collectors mentality. And if one knows and has a foundation about what good sound is, many times the two converge. That is, the collectible IS the best sounding version. I prefer that this is not the case and so does my pocketbook. But that is not reality. Again, acceptability comes into play. We cannot have the best sounding of every title in our collections. Sentiment also comes into play. I realize that many of the early Beatles original albums are mid-range strong. But, to me, that is the sound of The Beatles. As much as I strive for “the best sound”, the connection to another world and gritty in your face RnR of those originals are what I prefer when it comes to that particular group. But at least I know why I prefer that sound. See the difference? Therefore where does the strength lie? Again, it is found in knowing what to listen for and how to listen to. And doing your due diligence in research. Then we can more objectively determine the differences in sound quality and just how close or far off a reissue is from what that foundation is. I do not know many who have the ability, money or time to buy originals and reissues of every title they want to do actual A/B/C/D testing. And with a good foundation in understanding sound quality parameters one does not have to. This isn’t difficult. Learn what to listen for first. Arnaldo makes another good point with the Ramones for example. Sometimes the reissue does not hold up to the original. But again, I would add this comes down to what is it exactly that one means by “this one sounds better”. Is punk music better served by more clear aggression or do I prefer that the guitar actually sounds like what is on the tape? Which is more realistic? Which serves the style of the music best? And what also harkens back to the sentiment you first experienced in the album? Am I a new Ramones listener? Maybe I am less biased against audiophilism inching into a punk record. Maybe I am both digging the idea I can have the original sound now that I understand the genre better, yet also am taken by certain aspects of the best reissue. Again, how will you know these determinations without first understanding how to listen. And what to listen for. (I know, broken record) In the end what matters most? Are we afraid that if we get that cheaper boxset of three albums and discover that it sounds awesome that will endanger our quest for that $1500.00 original? Ahh the paychology of the music hobbyist. Gotta keep ourselves in check. Maybe we need an Audiophile Accountibility Support Group! Enjoyed the stream Chance and the gang🎸✌🏻thank you for your efforts.
Really thoughtful takes John. Had to take my time digesting and thinking about them, but glad I did. “This One Sounds Better” would do better on a tee shirt. Marketing, line one 📞 Thank you for these, and advancing the conversation forward 🙏🏻
To Arnoldo’s point, of not being too worried about the Nick Drake record he doesn’t have but wants and said maybe he will be at a euro record convention and spot it there, just want to say that’s a great perspective because it made me think “what’s more enjoyable: being the person who has every record they want or being the person who still has records to find”. We all want to be the king of our castle sitting on our treasures but really the life is in being the knight who’s on the quest for the kings treasure
this is a good point. there can always be something to look for, but does it hold personal meaning? or is it just an object; something to amass and put on a shelf? i think a lot of collectors could/should contemplate that as part of their buying logic.

Seems like all this Kevin Gray bashing is coming from those with buyers remorse paying all that money for the OG, when Kevin is making most of those OGs sound like crap compared with his releases. Yeah, mastering and cutting engineers do NOT like the fact that the OGs generally have the bass rolled off and a grainy midrange. Sure you want everyone in 2025 to cut the record just like the OG. Why in the world would you want a record that was tamed for crappy record players at the time. Get your facts straight here guys. Kevin is giving you kore of the Master tape than you hav e ever had. Yeah if you compare it to your crappy OG you will think he pumped the bass and accentuated the vocal range. That statement does jot seem like a problem to me. I want modern equipment and cutting rigs grabbing as much off the tape as technically possible. Sorry you paid so mu ch for the OG when you could have had a cleaner better cut kore true to the actual tape. Sorry, thats the reality people
I'm reminded of the old adage: some people like some things, and other people like other things. Likewise, (speaking for myself) I like some things KG has done (I feel he shines best on jazz), and some things weren't my fancy. In some instances I have to turn up a brand new record (reissue) past my pre-sets just to get an acceptable output whereas some OG's don't...that's the line for me. Take care ✌
@illumon8 Yes, new reissues are the way to go. Keep buying more reissues👍🏻👍🏻
@@FleagleSangria I am not sure if your being sarcastic or being serious. It is not always the case the reissue can be done better. It is probably more split down the middle. Sometimes pulling as much information off the tape can change the actual character and emotional delivery of a record. These are situations where I like the OG better as it is more relaxed and not in your face. some music lends to being in your face and it is desired to get the most off the tape. I cant recall any engineer saying they are trying to resemble the OG as much as possible. No, they do their best to get what was on the tape. Back in the day, if the record players would allow for a hotter pressing, you would have got one in the OG. Lets take the infamous Led II hot stamper. Nobody seems to claim the boosted bass and forward midrange of that pressing is not desirable, right? So why are people getting so down that they are now being given Hot Stampers of their favorite records? Yeah it wont lend to every record, I agree. I have been buying a ton of OGs and comparing them and the ones I already have against all cutting engineers recent cuts and not just KevinGray’s. A lot of this is subjective l, but to blanket statement that all cuts from one cutting engineer are bunk, is obviously one person’s opinion. Where it comes from, I don’t understand. If it were not for Chad, Michael F, Bernie, Kevin, Chris B, Ryan K, etc. etc. everyone in the Vc would only have OGs in the market. If you go back 10 years the options for new records was abysmal. We should all rejoice that they are giving us something new, even if “you” dont like it. And for all those cutting experts out there that think they can do better, go ahead and spend 10-20 years accentuating your cutting rig and figuring out how to get the best sound out of it. Good luck to you

Bryter Layter is my favorite from Nick Drake. I got into him from a Volkswagen commercial in the late 90s that used the song Pink Moon. I had a box set that I lost from him. That box set is now not cheap. I tried to look into getting OGs also from him but it is crazy insane money. They were super expensive 20 years ago when I was seeing if I could find them. I’m not a big singer song writer guy but Drake appeals to me. I tried to make a list of wants but I really don’t know what I want haha.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Don’t tell how expensive these are. You’re breaking my heart, Anakin! 🤣
I gave up on Nick Drake OGs and “settled” for the Fruit Tree box set which sounds great. But you never know… if I find one at the right price…😉 Good luck with the hunt!
I’m starting to think I’m closer to the end than the beginning.
It is a worthy and noble endeavor to take on getting those TVZ and Nick Drake originals. The UK Drakes will be super tough. I have a 2nd UK of pink moon, which is the second label design but apparently uses the same stamper as the pink rim. So in theory, should sound just as amazing and much cheaper. I have the US pressings on Antilles of the other 2. Never compared em to UKs, sure they aint as good so hopeful upgrades for me there as well. The TVZs I was lucky to secure Poppy pressings of those all around 2018-2019. They weren't very cheap then either, but now...yikes. Godspeed to you Chance
Thank you Dom! I like a challenge (as long as I don’t need to sell an organ to pay for it). Good vinyl luck to you on your list as well 🙏🏻
Good luck with the Drake pursuit Chance...took me 30 years to get the 3 😄 (Bryter Layter being the final one last year). You just don't see them around, even here in the UK. Bryter Layter is the one I've seen the most but only 3 or 4 times and wasn't happy with the condition on each occasion. I kick myself for not buying a 2nd press FLL around a decade ago for around £40/£50. Perfect shape but I'd recently bought the og so deemed it unnecessary. Obviously now even that 2nd press is selling well into triple digits. Good luck with the Townes as well...I think that'll be an 'easier' achievement but still a tough one. Cheers Nige
@@nigelcampag1290 easy….but difficult, yes 🤣 I was watching two TVZ records close on eBay and both closed 2-3x what they were at with 10 seconds left in each auction. INSANE close! 🔥

Over four thousand records and you're still on the lookout? Oh man, I struggle to find the time to listen to the 800+ records in my collection. It's funny, I wonder what the average collection size is in the VC? I wonder if the size of my collection is the outlier, and those in the VC have collections more along the size of yours. When I think of the A-Side panel, it seems like you, Rojas, Chris, José and Arnaldo (maybe, but he works for a label so is probably up there) are all what *I* would consider to be super-collectors all in that 4k+ volume range. I can't see that being the norm in the VC, but I could be completely mistaken. Oh, and I was surprised Maslov didn't magically appear on your screen when you said "Beatles". 🤣 Good luck with your wish list. I know you like hitting the LRSs, but where it make sense, use the Make Offer function on Discogs when you see it. I offered a buck-eighty on a record listed for $225 a few days ago, and the seller bit. I rarely ask for that much off, but the conditions existed where I thought it was still a good price for the seller. Good luck on your hunts! Cheers, Tom
@@highrantdistrict definitely not the norm, you are right. It’s a sickness with no known cure 🤣. I do like employing your Discogs maneuver - trying offers that are fair but price friendly. I like the US Capital Beatles records. I bought the 2024 Meet The Beatles and I am happy with it. Best wishes finding the originals. I think they are worth having. 😊
@@catherine6653 Thanks Catherine! I’ve heard those 2024 reissues sound pretty good. What say you?
@ConcertBuddie They sound great! I don't mind reissues. I look for best deals without compromise quality.
@ dig it! 😎
Hey pal. Happy New Year. Beatles originals....speaking from personal experience, that is a deep deep rabbit hole. Trust me.
@@NorthernRevolutions Happy New Year Buddie! Hope the little guy had a BIG bday this week 💪🏻. I’m gonna keep it basic - just studio albums. Probably. Long, long game in full effect 💸
@ Im mono and stereo first pressing Canadian…done. First pressing UK….almost done and very expensive. And yes the little guy had a good bday. Thanks my friend.
Great video! Thanks for the shout out! I’m hoping Billy does do a video telling his story. I’d like to hear his thoughts. I will keep my eyes open for Blaze and Townes for ya. Dillon is always into that stuff so he gets that kind of stuff all the time it seems.
@@spindoctorandhisvinylmayhem Thanks broseph!!
Gave up on OG Townes and Beatles records years ago. I did stumble upon one in Portland, but didn’t want to pay $125 for a cut corner. I’m silly like that. I would maybe like an OG copy of Live From The Old Quarter. Maybe. I scored the Nick Drake Fruit Tree box set this year. All of his albums in analog reissued in a box in 1979. It doesn’t include original artwork, but I’ll live with that. Cheers, Chance ✌🏻
@@TheDigitalGramophone I’m with you on the cut corner; especially if it’s a pricey one. Didn’t know about that ND box. Gonna check into it! Cheers Jon 🤘🏻
@@ConcertBuddieI also found a ND Fruit Tree box 2 yrs ago. Mine is the ‘79 3 LP version cut in the U.K., all analog, includes the three albums and 4 unreleased tracks. Different artwork but amazing sound quality.
@ now I’m even more interested. dare I even look to see how much these go for? 💸💸
Those fruit tree boxes use the OG Tapes AFAIK, a great way to get the catalogue without sacrificing a kidney for G+ copies
@ good looking out sir, thanks!
Ahh, the last Meagdeth album I truly loved.. cheers Buddie, always cool to see you
@@dimebagdave77 Dimeman, helllllo! Good to see you in the comments. Hope all is well sir!
@ConcertBuddie life is crazy sometimes, but never better✌️🤘 thanks Buddie, I'll keep you posted
That Megadeth find is unbleeping believable. Congrats Concert Buddies🤜
Thank you! And thanks for watching this one 🙏🏻
Respect to Jose for repping Daisy Rickman. I missed her lps first time round and have bought the 2nd presses for both of her lps. Really great stuff and looking forward to her future output. I only own two of the lps from that list. Not sure if that means I have bad taste or not. Great chat anyway guys. Cheers Nige
Jose, nobody is guilt tripped to buy anything. How addicted do you have to be to be “guilted” into buying a $150 record that you don’t want
I enjoyed the convo but would appreciate Jose trying to articulate his thoughts besides just cursing every other word. Comes off as angry with no actual solution to the problems. He doesn’t seem to understand how business works. Nobody is forcing you to buy these pressings.
Haha if you guys are asking for suggestions on what albums to do for the next ranking segment, 1,000% don’t use highest selling most commercially accessible albums again because that was rough!
Master of Puppets, Appetite for Destruction, and Born in the USA are terrible albums on Opposite Day
I was watching live and it was hurting my soul, haha
@ ahaha! It really did
😂😂😂 100% 😂😂😂
No love for AC/DC?
@@adamhunt4462 that’s high voltage rock n roll mmk
Jose was dropping the truth heaters, I agree, 20,000 audiophile copies of Aja is too much, you have to sell out in todays business. I just hope 20,000 isn’t the number they had to agree on
I have to disagree completely with Jose. I want to eventually own a few of the Steely Dan's UHQRs. Should I have to feel that I MUST BUY that LP within a few weeks of it coming out OR it will be gone and then I have to buy in the near future from the Flippers? No thanks, produce the LPs on at least a two year demand not a 60 day demand.
That, is a very selfish way of expecting the market to move around you
@@arzabael Actually that is how it USED to work, you did not have to wonder if an album was going to be in print
@@arzabael I wonder if the musicians who actually create the art would agree with you?
@ I agree with you on preferring it be that way again. Everything in todays world is rushed and scarce and panicky
@@scottadams7523 idk. The more I’m thinking about it the more sad I’m getting how much the OP is right, sales plans use to account for years now they turn and burn everything and we’re always caught in the tail wind
Hi concert buddy...whatever your name is...tapped into your vid...interesting...am a vendor last 15 years...curious to your personal tastes...80s/wave? You mentioned Thompson Twins? Artists as such...New Order Joy Division Depeche Mode Ultravox...ah jazz...now were talkin...seems like you injoy 'schooling' with names 'who heard about' Clifford Brown' yes perished in an accident PA Turnpike traveling to a gig. Yes CB also recorded sides with the late great Max Roach! (Less showy than Buddy Rich...who is phenonmenal...just prefer MR) Jazz huh? Whom else are you aware of? Now to George Strait...veteran name...curious...are u a fan of/heard about Asleep at the Wheel...Ray Benson's baby since 1970? Plenty of releases to dig into friend! Ill be at Travis" gig end of next month stop by and say hi hello...might have something to prick your interest...btw keep the flat black and circilar spinning
@@annkopfer6713 nice to meet you (virtually) like this! My tastes are all over the place. Depeche Mode is great, “Violator” is my favorite album of theirs. Jazz is an area I have much to learn, but when I find an artist I like, I tend to deep dive into their outputs, either as a leader or part of an ensemble. I have too many George Strait records. The guys on one of our recent podcasts had a laugh at my expense when I was showing my George Strait collection. There’s a reason they call him “King George” 🙂. I look forward to meeting you at Travis’ next show. Please introduce yourself!
