Phnom Penh in 1968 was once hailed as the "Pearl of Asia," a city renowned for its charm and beauty. Designed with a vision by French architects, the layout of Phnom Penh still retains elements of its elegance, despite the rapid urbanization and disorder of the 21st century. Today, however, the city is a far cry from its former glory. Chaotic building projects, uncontrolled urban sprawl, and traffic without regulation have turned it into one of the least pedestrian-friendly cities in the world. With virtually no proper pedestrian crossings or footpaths, Phnom Penh has become a difficult place to navigate, diminishing its appeal to visitors. Phnom Penh today is a living canvas that tells the story of Cambodia's tumultuous history-a tale of political upheavals, genocide, and power struggles that defined the nation over three decades. In contrast, 1968 marked a peak of peace, freedom, and democracy in Cambodia. While the country was under the monarchy led by King Norodom Sihanouk, political plurality flourished. The king’s Sangkum Reastr Niyum (សង្គមរាស្ត្រនិយម), or the People’s Socialist Community, dominated the political landscape but coexisted with other significant political movements. These included the Democratic Party (គណបក្សប្រជាធិបតេយ្យ), the Pracheachon Party (គណបក្សប្រជាជន), and the Khmer Renovation Party (គណបក្សសម្រស់ខ្មែរ). This diversity of political thought in 1968 was a hallmark of a relatively open society-a stark contrast to the present day. At that time, Cambodia enjoyed more freedom of expression and political competition than it does today. The atmosphere of openness in 1968 contrasted sharply with modern Phnom Penh, where governance is dominated by individuals with limited understanding of urban planning. Many leaders lack the experience or vision required to manage the complexities of the capital city, leading to its evident decline. What was once a city of beauty, ambition, and cultural vibrancy is now a symbol of lost potential, struggling to reconcile its storied past with its chaotic present.....

Since Josip Tito had visited to Cambodia eight years before the Khmer Rouge took the power on that country, Pol Pot should had pursued the Tito style of communism instead of Maoism, Stalinism or a North Korean style of communism in his home country. That one he couldn't killed millions of Cambodians under his dictatorship and he'd allowed free market in a Communist system and became the Josip Tito of the East and might be as prosperous as of today's Vietnam and China. He'd choose the wrong side of Communism that makes his country a terrible place to live and a Hell on Earth during his brutal regime between 1975-79. Sad and also cringe.

Without the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodia today would certainly be economically catching up with neighboring Southeast Asian countries. such as urbanization, development of transportation, electricity, internet and possibly a Chinese-controlled economy
