Nick's Nectar
United States
Nicholas's great grandfather was a beekeeper in East Prussia in the early 1900s. This extends our family fascination with beekeeping and our experience as amateur beekeepers. This channel provides insight into backyard beekeeping as we eventually move towards commercial beekeeping. My son provides insight and commentary from the view of a now 9 year old (we started when Nicholas was 5) as we learn and grow together in the art of beekeeping.
Queens?
This is our first time grafting queens. We'll see how they come out. Out of 4, 3 of them are capped and potentially growing. Let's check the results!

Finishing checking the hives after the swarm split
Checking the last of the hives from the emergency splits. Two of them have queens and one hive is making a new queen. Don't miss our next episode where we graft larvae to make queens!
Checkup after swarm split
Really quick checkup on the forced split we made to hopefully prevent a swarm. It turns out the split went well. The queen was in the new brood box. So that makes it as near as possible to a natural swarm.
Swarms and Splits
We had two hives trying to swarm. So we made some blind splits. We'll check to see if the queens are there another day. We had planned on making splits of these large hives in July after the nectar flow. Guess nature decided otherwise. We're having a great year so far and will hopefully set a record honey harvest!
Start of 2024

Start of our 5th year of beekeeping. The year is starting off great and will hopefully lead to a successful year!
Mid Season 2023
Our overwintered hive died. We have two new packages. One package swarmed immediately but we were able to catch it. We also caught a swarm in our backyard. And we lost quite a bit of equipment because of wax moths over the winter.
Are they still alive
We did a quick hive check to see if the bees made it through the bitter cold
Bottling the Honey
We bottle 60 lbs of honey into 70 BEARS! Such a great harvest this year!
Processing the Harvest
In this video, we're processing the harvest from this year's season (2022). It was a great harvest with the Russian bees really working hard and delivering honey in only 2 1/2 months!
Harvest

Our first sizeable harvest. After 3 years, it's paying off - both with knowledge and honey!
The Hunt for Red Forearm
The Russians Have Arrived. The Russian bees arrived and I got a ping on my forearm - one ping only
Insectiside? Still not sure
We won't have time to check this hive again later this week so we're cracking it open now. Later this week, we'll have two new hives...
What happened?!?
Our first hive to ever make it through winter almost died out. About 1/2 the bees were dead in the bottom of the hive.

How wonderful!! Honey 🍯!!
Where are you in the USA? Is the HOT hive a hybridized colony? If so, you may want to replace that queen with a known European queen.
Hey Jocephus, we're in north Georgia. All the hives are Russian bees this year. This is our third year and the past two years weren't very fruitful. The first and second winter all the hives died out. So this year, we were looking for more active and robust bees. That comes at a price with the bees also being more aggressive. We did Italians and also Carniolan bees in that order. The Carniolans did a bit better than the Italians. In comparison, as a guess the Russian bees did about 3x more productivity. Hopefully they'll make it through the winter with these super strong hives. Thanks so much for the view and the comments!
Love !!

Also, I like the added text and videos.
Thanks Faisha.
The swarm cell situation is very interesting. I will have to do some research on that. I want to know what role the cells play in swarming.
Thanks Faisha, yes. The cells on the bottom are indications that the hive is trying to raise a new queen. At that time, 1/2 the hive will leave with the old queen. The new queen and the rest of the hive will start fresh in the same location with less bees and less honey. Also, the queen can't fly well. To prepare to swarm, the bees will restrict the diet of the queen to make her lose weight. Afterwards, she can fly. Great comments.
Wonderful!!
Many thanks!
