Oak Street Boot Makers Trench Boots Ruined…and how I “fixed” them
มุมมอง 11K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
In Nov 2022, I bought a pair of trench boots from Oak Street Boot Makers and I didn't like them as much as I thought I would. I decided to dye them oxblood hoping to make them better, but , of course I made it worse. In this video, I talk about what I did to ruin them, why I did it, and how I can salvage what was almost lost. Hope you enjoy the vid! Thanks for watching.

    yeah i feel like there's a modern sentiment that patina = abuse and neglect. partly because people dont actually have their things for long enough and use them hard enough for them to develop real patina.

    You're doing it the right way! I'm personally more impressed with a boot cared for & aged beautifully vs. One that is clearly dry, dirty, & mistreated. You have to take care of your things! Great work, they're beautiful boots & the vid was engaging ✌🏼

    Not bad. I’ve been thinking about doing the same with the Nicks I ordered. I ordered them with brown edge color in brown waxed flesh and didnt realize how dark the edge color is. I haven’t changed the order yet because I think the light natural edge color would contrast too much with the almost black BWF when they’re new.

    Dying them black was a good solution to the problem, well done. Down the road when you have the next new pair of boots, I'd recommend you just use some Obenauf's LP conditioner if you're looking to darken the boots a bit or add "instant patina".

    I think you got the patina philosophy down. I personally prefer the patina of well taken care of leather. I guess it’s the “longevity look” if that makes sense. I’ve done both with leather products. While non conditioned leather goods have that certain rugged look, they won’t last that long. Then that kinda defeats the purpose of purchasing something of quality.

    I'm picking up a pair of these in copper as well. I love the contrast of the light and dark, that natural distressed look. I was concerned about what products to use as to not darken the leather too much and mess them up. So far I'm considering bick 4 or the red wing leather lotion. Great info thanks for the vid, the boots look much better to me after the cleaning.

    While I wasn't as unfortunate as you were with my Oak Street boots mine look dry to my out of the box and I'm reluctant to condition them feeling that such a reputable brand wouldn't send them out too dry. After seeing the mismatched leather on yours makes me feel like conditioning them won't be as invasive as dying them red😁. You're eventual Black solution worked well though.

    That black and white thumbnail fooled me and I thought this was a pair of grey Grant Stones that I somehow missed. Grey is the most underrated boot color. I do agree with you though about the versatility and durability of the wax commander, especially living in a tropical climate where it rains all the time. I'm really wondering how these will age and patina.

    • @LikewiseAmericana
      @LikewiseAmericana 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ha! Sorry I fooled you. I’ve always liked GS’s storm kudu, but never clicked purchase. I think I’ll have to look into a pair forreal now.

    • @cheekibreeki9155
      @cheekibreeki9155 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am actually curious though, is there going to be significant wear and patina difference between waxed commander, being a waxed suede on steroids and something like a waxed roughout or waxed flesh. I only have smooth leathers like calf, gaucho crazy horse and cxl up to this point and a waxed flesh/roughout/suede is certainly on the menu. That is unless OSB brings back their indigo roughout field boot in my size and take my lunch money first lol.

    I think they look far better after conditioning. I have a very old pair of cowboy boots made in Phoenix. The reason they lasted so long is down to conditioning every so often and really not worrying about the patina. As it happens they now have a lovely patina that can only be achieved through time, and not neglect.
