China not hiring Black South Africans anymore? | Is Teaching English in China in 2024 worth it?
The conversation around the ESL market in China right now is that most schools are no longer hiring Black South Africans and some are offering low salaries to new teachers and salary cuts for current teachers.
Though I’m not personally affected at the moment but in this video I share my thoughts and opinions on the situation and here to let you know that you’re not alone and I hope you find a school that will value you and pay you your worth.
If you’re affected by this or have something to share please do so in the comments section so we can help each other out and share information.

Do you think the job hopping is what is also affecting South africans?
They just don’t lik us Africans. It’s not about the money but yea exploitation is used by these schools.
Thanks for the nice video. Can you please say where or how you got this job? How could you recognize it's a good fit for you? I'd appreciate your help cause I'm searching for a new job here in Guangzhou and I'm a bit disappointed 😪
Thank you. I share about getting this job on this video Work Life Update| Why I left the school and what's next + Graduation & Gifts | Emily Boitumelo th-cam.com/video/60Ijp98Bjzw/w-d-xo.html
Awesome
听说有个南非教师和顾主起冲突,然后呢西方媒体大肆攻击我们种族歧视,所以估计是没有人敢再雇佣的
In China, it's government policy to turn away from English. Yes, birth rates are low but you don't see that for 5+ years. It takes five years and nine months to grow a five-year-old. Of course there's always preferential treatment given to white people with blue or green eyes from one of the actually Anglo countries, but that's true in Japan and Korea and elsewhere too.
Welcome back❤ I really enjoy your vlogs
Thank you 😊
Wonderfully informative video! Thanks for your transparency and talking about this! It has been affecting me too as a Black American living in China for 5 years.
Very beautiful. But how is the washing machine so cheap
Thank you. It’s quite small and not at all fancy so I guess the price represent that 🤭. It’s really good though.

How precious! You're so good with the children. I was touched. I see what you said in other video about building relationships with the kids. They speak so much English already. It seems you speaks at a natural speed with them. A class visit is so informative. Great videos. Keep them coming.
🙏🏽 thank you

Thank you ☺️
Hi Emily!!! I absolutely love your channel 🥺❤️ I am a South African Indian and I am in Matric I want to get a bachelor's degree in Education and teach English in China or South Korea. Do you think that I should go ahead at this point?
Thank you 🙏🏽🩷. If teaching is something that you really want to do then please go ahead. China and South Korea are great places to teach in but they are not the only countries that need teachers. It may be difficult for some right now but we’re hopeful that the market will get better. There are so many students in need of good teachers.
Unfortunately some kids have theyr parents far (here's why maybe this affirmation)
I moved here last year September and it has been blow after blow! Got in a TC, they got rid of me after 16 days. I managed to secure a job after a few weeks, the offer was okay but mentally I going under! I resigned and securing my current job was a mission! Things are not rosy, the high salaries people speak of? I’m still waiting for a full cheque(I’ve been getting pro rata). It’s bad!
😔😔 so sorry that’s been your experience so far. For most of us it really does start off quite rough before things get to what seems to be rosy. Praying that things get better for you 🌸🩷🩷
Maybe English could be considered the native language now but many people don't understand one other. There are over 10 languages. My research - growing up there over the last 40 years.
I just watch your videos before and now I’m in China. 🥰
So cool 😊🌸🩷
Yup they ghost you after seeing your picture. No matter how qualified you are.
So rude 😞😞
It is a bit racist, but there are also other factors that are understandable as to why some schools don't want to hire black SA teachers. 1-most black teachers in China at the primary levels are not NES's so parents are wary of being lied to by the school, so not as good for the school from a business perspective. 2-many black SA teachers, even if NES's, have an 'African' accent, which is less desirable for schools and parents. Especially if the students are preparing to go overseas or take IELTS/TOEFL exams.
also. most students will be going abroad to study in the US, or Canada, Australia, England, and not SA, so it makes sense that they want teachers from these countries
is not true at all, the demand is still huge for qualified teachers. I haven't taught for 5 years, and applied at some schools, and most offered me the job right away.
I am currently at a kindergarten and in overall my school is good but i am with them through an agency, i am actually tired of the agency as they take part of my salary every month and am trying to apply to other schools its still dry yooh. Don't even know what to do
Try talking to the school if you could sign with directly after your current contract ends. Normally agencies are quite expensive even for schools so they would be willing to sign you directly if they’re not outsourcing other services to the agency.
@@emilyboitumelo i tried they said it's not possible i think the option i have now is to look for another school because they are just taking a lot shame. around 6 k every month.
How much does South Africa value this type of Master's degree? It seems really handy. Well done, Sisi. You'll make it through.
my school let me go, leaving in June. after 8 solid years I'm done bra. and yes, stay away from kindergartens, it's not secure.
Nooo 😭😭😭😭. I’m so sorry 😞😞. Is the school shutting down?
Try the Middle East or the U.S. There is a teacher shortage in America
I heard that the Middle East has some good offers and the quality of life there is very good.
Emily, sad facts to share. Your parents and country fought (and many died) against Apartheid / racism, gave you the education they couldn´t have only for you to go to another man´s country that happens to freely practise Apartheid of their own! For me, China is, outside of business and tourism, a no-go for Africans/black ppl like many other Asian ESL countries. It´s traumatising, the money is not worth it, though I understand why many go (looking for greener pastures). Thanks for being honest and warning everyone to come at their own risk (the next pandemic/crisis there will hit black first, whites last. At the same time Africa rolls the white carpet for Chinese, Indians, Whites who all combine despise us adn we entertain them in and outside of Africa. Ican´t understand Africans s.t. This is the world we are living in. Sis, Please come back to Africa and build. You might not become a millionare overnight or at alll, but you are home and loved. By coming and staying at their countries, despite the treatment only signals to them, theat we are truly hopeless creatures, not human with dignity, bc they wouldn´t for a day stay! God bless!
The Chinese dont speak English so they know nothing about English proficiency. You can fake your qualifications, claim you are from the UK and they will hire you even if you speak and write ghetto English which is not acceptable in UK institutions. They are also clueless about Africa and the world in general, geography, culture etc since they live in a closed off country which restricts internet access. Most probably they think South Africa is an English speaking country because the name is English. Lol. They form ideas and make assumptions based on what they see on TV.
Hai we are going through it shame yaz🥹🥹💀
Kuningi 😔😔
What was the amount initially they used to offer from 12k rmb?
To my knowledge back in 2019 it was at least 15k rmb plus housing allowance or free apartment in Beijing
Dear Readers, Welcome to the reality of the rest of us black people from the African continent . All these countries have a list of the "7" preferred countries - Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, or South Africa. I guess black south Africans no longer sit on this list. Racism at its best. I can't tell you the number of times I have applied for these positions and been told, my nationality does not qualify. I paid for an entire TEFL course, and the company I was learning through, knew where I wanted to go and teach, and never once did they tell me that my nationality would never qualify. I only found out when I tried to applied for jobs. I couldn't even get jobs through them because of the same. So for anyone wanting to teach, do your research first before wasting your money on a course you can't use. I have also realised that the removal of black south africans has nothing to do with the Chinese Government, but rather with the Agencies themselves. I have spoken to the Chinese Embassy and they are willing to give visas to South Africans and other African countries, depending of course on the offer from the school, however the agencies are now putting in their own qualifying criteria and they have chosen to remove blacks from the African continent.
Thank you Emily for this video... When I commented about the salary, my offer went out the door😅
Bathong 😔😔 you’re expecting to just accept whatever. They’re playing into people’s desperation it’s really sad 😞
I wasn't going to comment but this is something I experienced a lot from "some" condescending Korean co-teachers many years ago. I think the designated pool of English speaking countries, particularly in Africa, it's diplomatically based on first of all The Commonwealth background, secondly I think it's based on progressive history and politics. Because not only are Foreign teachers merely teaching English but also bringing with them English culture in the classroom. It's not only about money, but something based on socio political background of a country, because a lot of times there are a lot of historical and cultural aspects of the English language that a teacher is expected to explain to the students as part of English learning process. To enable them to understand the culture and be able to do business with Anglophone countries in future. The last time I checked Zimbabwe wasn't and it still isn't a member of Commonwealth (for political reasons) These are the things that diplomats put in consideration when determining who they deem qualified as a "native English teacher" also as per visa requirement. In a nut shell who they think would better teach their children English while imparting English culture with them, for future purpose of commerce and even possibly migration to English speaking countries. If you look at the list of 7 designated English speaking countries, with the exception of USA, all of them are the strongest members of The Commonwealth countries. This is why I say it's not only about teaching English as a native English teacher. Host countries that are inviting native English teachers are doing this with a trade purpose in mind. They are carrying out this initiative for the future purpose of cultural exchange also as a way to prepare for stronger future trade relations with these 7 designated English speaking countries (which also happen to be major global economic zones) with the commonality of English as their primary language of commerce. Let me conclude this by saying to you (Tea is how we meet) 📜
Zimbabwe was a member of the Commonwealth until 2003 when they left for political reasons. Educate yourself
@@Bourne-fu8bz No, it was removed for human rights reasons. Such are things that are affecting your diplomatic recognition compared to other current members of Commonwealth.
This is your statement "The last time I checked Zimbabwe wasn't and is still not a member of Commonwealth" You are implying Zimbabwe has never been a member of Commonwealth. It's strange someone who calls himself an English teacher doesn't understand a simple phrase. There is something called Google to fact check your statements. Zimbabwe got its independence in 1980, we were members of the Commonwealth from 1980 to 2003. Besides, there are Zimbabwean teachers in China. The third largest group of foreign nurses in the UK from Africa are Zimbabweans, after Nigeria and Kenya. Zimbabweans also working in Australia, Ireland Canada and USA. The Chinese are clueless about English proficiency standards. Most of the English teachers in China would not qualify for a job in the UK, Australia or USA. Zimbabweans can be found in top positions in English speaking countries working as lecturers, engineers, accountants, architects etc.
@@Bourne-fu8bz Listen I'm not here to pointlessly argue with you. I merely stated your diplomatic setbacks and things that you do not have compared to South Africa to be on a list of 7 designated native English speaking countries where ESL teachers are recruited from. It's a long list of diplomatic requirements. We all know Zimbabwe is nothing compared to South Africa in terms of the economy, size and many other factors. I will close my argument here, so that I don't agitate you any further.
I recommend people to start looking elsewhere. Try Middle East.
Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room. I was trying to help a friend in SA get a job here in August but the schools/recruiters are not having it AT ALL. Devastating! 💔
And when you recommend recruiters to people and they start ignoring them it’s like we’re not giving good recommendations or not wanting to help 😞😞
This is so wild, imagine! So blatantly nogal! Hopefully you and other teachers can shine more light on this issue and more people will be willing to stand beside us because this is clear cut racism. So disheartening.
It’s so blatant and they don’t even care. They’ll tell you that’s what the school/parents want. Fighting seems pointless cause they’ll just tell you to go back home. But I really hope we can help each other where we can through this
Zimbabweans seem to stay mad at SAns like they aren’t coming into the country in droves and use SA as stepping stone to get to other countries, it’s disgusting. They always claim to be better but they have nothing to show for that “betterness”. We’re cool with other African people from their countries but wow, they have been showing out , especially on social media.
Nothing but the truth 🙌🏽.
O montle maan! Thank you for this informative video. It's sad but it will be China's loss. SAns are some of the best teachers.
Kealeboga 🥰🥰. So true, South African teachers are working their asses off here. We’re truly the best in the game and that’s being overlooked because of the color of our skin and that we’re from Africa 😞😞
It makes sense because whites is their native language but is sad for south Africans though i hope South African government can create more jobs for south Africans eish so that they don't have to struggle in china
Hopefully the next elections will bring some change to our country.
Most white people in South Africa are Afrikaners. It has less to do with who’s who but it’s straight up white supremacy. Here they’ll employ a Russian who can’t speak more than 5 words in English and leave a black American / South African who speak fluent English.
It’s really hard hey people should start looking in other countries as well.
True China is not the only country that needs ESL teachers.
They offered me 10K rmb said they'd increase it to 11k rmb the following year. If I broke the contract I would be fined 500 usd I am so grateful for Sli who told me to decline the offer. I am still looking but I am glad I did not take the sl@ve contract
That’s definitely a slv contract. They even have no shame when offering people these contracts 😞. Glad you didn’t take it, it’s really not worth it. I hope something better comes up for you. 🙏🏽🩷
Hie There how are you? I’m wondering if the same is happening to subject teachers in primary or high school or it’s mostly affecting the esl ? Might you have any idea on this ?
I think at the moment kindergarten and primary school ESL teachers are the ones who are mostly affected.
It’s depressing, been wanting to move to mainland but the offers are ridiculously very low, at 12k in Suzhou is not worth it for me😔
It’s really not. The move has to make sense because despite popular belief, things aren’t that cheap in China. A decent salary is needed especially for the amount of work you’ll be expected to do. Hopefully something worthy will come up 🙏🏽🩷🩷
the average salary for teachers is 20-30k, and those positions are very easy to find if qualified.
Thank you Emily
Our options at this moment are quite limited.
They really are 😞.
Its tricky honestly, at this point, sticking to your current school is the best or better options thats if you are happy. As long as they pay you on time and you work within stipulated hours in the contract stay.
Absolutely. I totally agree! Being at a good school right now is a total blessing.
I just received an email after applying for a job. It states “sorry, this school prefers a white teacher” 😭😭😭
😞😞😞 I’m so sorry. It’s so disheartening receiving messages like that, but don’t let it tear you down. That’s just a sign that you’re not meant to be there. A better option will eventually come up and I hope it does soon 🙏🏽🙏🏽🩷🩷
@@emilyboitumelo thank you ☺️ Hopefully I come across something better. I wanna leave my job end of July when my contract ends.

Sana, they would rather hire a Russian with a strong accent than a black teacher with a masters degree.. I’ve seen this here in Shenzhen 😢
Yoh! Just because of skin color 😭😭😭. Yoh it’s so disheartening. It happens in Beijing as well 😞 It shows that they don’t care about the kids’ education. They just want to look “good” on paper 😏
Aside from the skin color. Russians are also much cheaper and have friendlier relations with China.
