Triumph Bonneville T120 vs. Speedmaster Comparison | What kind of ride does each offer
How does the Triumph Bonneville T120 differ from the Triumph Speedmaster? In this side-by-side comparison video, I compare the character of the Triumph T120 vs. the Triumph Speedmaster, and what kind of a ride each offers. Also what to do if you want one to be more like the other. This might be insightful to someone looking at each model, or for someone who already owns one and wonders about the other. Triumph Bonneville Handlebar Wobble and How a Steering Damper can fix it.
มุมมอง 2.2K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Why does my handlebar wobble on my Triumph Bonneville? If you have experienced a handlebar wobble on your Triumph Bonneville while letting for a second, it may not be the tires, or the suspension, you just may need a steering damper. Here I compare how my Triumph Bonneville T120 handles with a Steering Damper. Also here is a link to one as well. Steering Damper www.diybikely.com/product-page/st...

Probably not if its angled upwards,
Does anyone know if aftermarket REMUS exhaust will fit under these cases? Thank you kindly
You bought the wrong bike.
I am from the UK and the owner of a T120 and it’s the best all rounder that I have ever owned. I traded in a Speedmaster for this one as I disliked the suspension on the cruiser. As the pegs were forward it was impossible for me lift my backside to avoid looming jolts from pot-holes. Now I have the T120 I use it for country rambles as well as touring with canvas saddlebags - and no back problems!
Thanks for your comment. I get what you're saying about your back taking the impact, the T120 is much better at that, as well as for 2-UP. That seems to be an issue for most cruisers, I have found the Indian Motorcycles to have that issue as well. Thanks for sharing, ride safe.
great for touring trips! tie down more things on the top! really great share! n thanks!
Thanks for your comment, yeah, these are pretty solid!.
Being an inexperienced Rider practicing on freeway and turns the wobble was very scary and I attributed it to my lack of experience this video is great because I was able to connect that I felt it also on little bumps the wobble would start
Thanks for your comment. For a premium motorcycle, it's an issue for me. I think Triumph should look into it. I have not ridden another motorbike that has a similar issue, but I wonder if other ones have this issue as well.
I own a 22 Speedmaster, and while I love my bike, I am constantly curious about the T120. I added a pair of Viking bags, and it has been wonderful for longer trips. The suspension is the one thing I don't enjoy about the SM. I always knew I would need a 2nd bike, but ended up buying a z900rs cafe.
Very true, I think many of us feel we always need a second bike. There is a difference between a long-trip travel two-lane bike, and an interstate long distance machine. For the latter, I would prefer something much more confident and capable, hence another bike! :) If there is only one bike,, I think the T120 is a strong contender. Thanks again, ride safe!
Love the bags! Where can I get them?
Not one view from front to see how the mount.... How could you possibly omit? useless video
What model rack kit did you need? Looks like a great setup, looking to copy for my T100
What’s with the vibrating speedo?
Is that a Corbin seat?
why doesnt the speedmaster have two clocks on the instrument panel? dealbreaker for me
nice video, i have same set up, but without steering damper, and i have shimmy!! have you got the same difficuties? have you change the shocks? thanks you
I replaced the front springs, and have bitubo shocks, which are great. But the Steering Damper is the only thing that fixed the wobble issue. The shocks did not fix the wobble, but the bike definitely rides much better. I have another video where i show how the wobble and how the damper fixes it. The Damper works really well, and locks the bike together. I recommend, especially at highway speeds of 75 mph+. I would almost say the Damper is a better buy than the shocks, but that's just me
thank you very much for the answer.
Can you post a pic of the billy bar how it attaches to the bike... your video is ok but you only shot it from one angle and never from the front or close to show how the billy bar attaches to the frame ...
The bike is stashed for winter, but you check with the manufacturer maybe?
I test rode both the T120 and the Speedmaster last week. For all the things you indicated and the fact that I felt completely comfortable and at home within 300' of riding the T120 and not so with the Speedmaster. I assume I would get used to the Speedmaster, but the T120 was the bike for me and ordered one the same day. Should arrive next week- Can't wait! Thanks - David
Nice! Which color?
great looking. Want a top box added also but don't want to remove that grab rail. dont' see why a little design effort to leave that in place.
assume you need be careful in adding a top box also ; for opening.
nice. big and dont' need crash bars !!
Thank you for the video very helpful. Just ordered my T120 this week.
Which model did you pick up? Just curious.
@@bike_addict I found a blue/white 2023 (new) in a dealership in Farmington, New York. I loved the color combo and put a down payment on it- The bike is being shipped out to Montana this week. Long wait, but I am getting exactly what I wanted. I test drove the Speedmaster and Speed Twin- great bikes but when I got on the T120 it instantly felt right. I owned a 1200 XE for 2+ years and loved it but got tired of the tall seat heght and burning my leg and sold it.
Nice! That is a great. I like clocks on it. Super cool.
@@bike_addict Super excited, already ordered the center stand, heated grips, Triumph grab handle and rear rack. I like your Corbin seat, I think I will end up with that also. Leaning towards SW- Logitech panniers.
@@flyingmulerider7166 Wow. You def gotta ride that seat, it's pretty stiff for a little bit. Although I will say the 2023 and up seats are much comfier than pre-2021 models.
thank you for your research. It really helped!
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching the video.
Thanks! Color I like.
I have a 2020 Triumph T120 and I can say without doubt it is the superior bike vs the Speedmaster. One big advantage IMO the T120 has over the SM is the lean angel in the corners. You can really push the T120 hard in the curves without the pegs scraping whereas the SM will scrape relatively easily in the twisties. The T120 is such a light and flickable bike that it impresses me even after 5 years of ownership!
Yeah, it's fun on the turns, I would say as fun as naked bike, but good lookin'!
Holy crap. That seat is 💲💲💲. Nice video
Thanks, color I like
I am 62 and just bought a T100 and i agree its not perfect, but it is perfect for me.
That's awesome. I like the T100, perfect bike in 5th gear at 55 on the two-lane, really comes alive!
That bike is hot man. Nice job!
Question if you’re able to answer, I might of missed it in the video but if I get the hard bags that are in the video can I simultaneously also use a passenger back rest?
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I believe so, if you get the backrest, you would have to remove the hand rail which is where the mounts attach, so it would basically replace that.

@@bike_addict thank you!
Love this man.
Thanks!
I have the same issue on my 2007 t100. Just ordered a steering damper so hopefully should help 🙂
I didn't know the issue went so far back, I think it def will.
Not sure the community would appreciate this... but thank upu. This video made me realize I already have a better bike for me at 6'4" and as many touring miles as I do. Maybe one day I'll grab a used bonnie just to habe around... they sure speak to the heart since I grew up riding in the 1970s.
It's all good.
I have this issue with my Bonneville, it seems to be caused by the rubbers where the handlebar clamps are mounted.
Hmm... interesting perspective. Could very well be.
Out of curiosity, with the tall fix windscreen and your large luggage bags, what kind of gas mileage at 80 mph cruise do you get consistently?
Hmm, you know I never checked, the Bonnie is pretty good on the gas, I would say mid-low 40's. I'll have to check.
Buy a GS😅
Want to stop wobble? Don't take your hands off of the bars. Seriously. The T120's design takes the mass of the rider's arms and shoulders into account, using them as dampers. There's never any legitimate reason to take both hands off of the grips. Just one hand resting lightly on a grip is all the damping that the design needs. Let's not go identifying problems that don't exist.
I will agree to disagree here. The video addresses this approach. Thanks for watching the video.
@@bike_addict Any bike design can be made ultra stable if the rake and trail are increased enough. Such a bike is miserable to ride. I'll wait for a T120 recall for stability. Bet I'll be waiting for a long time.
Those cases are butt ugly.
Did you ever look at the madstad detachable windshield made for the t120 I have one and it’s great
Hi, yes, that would be my choice out of the third party well known co.'s However, quite tall, aesthetically, meh. But works great, totally agree.
What leather palette did you go with?
@secutores, Chocolate, but I would ask them to send you a sample of colors, they will and then you can match. There is one that matches the stock brown on the t120 black as well.
I heard ground clearance could also be an issue. T120 has more clearance on top of center stand
Thanks for the comment. It's possible, the pegs on the Speedmaster are def a little lower and more forward, I can see it scraping during a good lean...
Any of you guys know if it would fit a street scrambler?
It would not, I think you would have to see about the sump plate, but you can always check with the company, they would know better.
Too big
Lol, for every day around town, yeah, for a longer ride, I like em, but I dont put them on every day.
Could you make a video about the suspension upgrade, cheers
Great video, do you think would be fine a trip 2up with this seat you got for touring, and the power is enough to take 2 people about 130kg together? And the stock rear suspension would be fine or an upgrade would be necessary, cheers!
Highway? I dunno....Gets a little sketchy past 70MPH with 2 for me. I prefer solo on the highway, and 2Up on the two-lanes. But, that's just me.
I have sump plate under the bike and I wonder where you installed these pegs ? Do you think both can be used at the same time? if there is an install manual , can you share it ? thank you
I am not sure, although I did see a guy with a sump plate and the pegs, it was the OEM one. I had the Motone, and it was too tall. You'd have to check with the company to see for your particular one, ask and see. But def check before you buy. Ride safe.
I have this problem which is more severe than your bike on my 2008 Triumph Speedmaster it a common problem on most bikes but some models are worse than others why a steering damper or at least the provision to fit a factory one isn't standard my bike has fork shrouds so you cant put a clamp on the fork leg
I think u can fit one from the side, but I am not aware of any kits for the older Speedmaster. Most universal ones are from the side.
Nice upgrades. I went with the Triumph touring windscreen knowing that it won't completely shield me. It takes a good bit of the wind off of my chest which is a good thing when touring but I still get wind on my shoulders & face which is also good since the screen isn't adjustable. I used to ride FJR's with the adjustable windscreen so one could put wind on or off you depending on the temperature. I went with the Hepco & Becker C-Bow mounting brackets and bags. I have a variety of bags including one's similar to your Givis. The brackets also are very unobtrusive when bags are left off.
Thanks for your comments. Hepco & Becker are good bags too.
@bike_addict I like the brackets for lashing/tie downs on your Givis, that's a nice feature.
Your Vid is very helpful, as currently I am planning on doing a 2 month trip in Canada (shipping T120 from UK) in 2025 and then USA in 2026 and was considering changing to a GT Pro, but now I have seen what is possible for upgrade I am now thinking stick with T120 and just upgrade a few things (will certainly be cheaper than trading in for a GT Pro)
Thanks for your comment. The upgrades do help, although the Tiger is one good bike. I've takne 300-400 mile trips before, but the winds in the mountains are strong, love the Bonneville but for an adventure like that, I dunno, I guess you have to test it out right?
You butchered it
I would strongly disagree. There could be an argument for the traditional colored Bonnies, but the Black... looks boring stock. Triumph made it to do something diffferent, seems like blank canvas to me. and besides it doesn't look like that all the time, but it sure is comfy and enjoyable. Ride safe.
I beg to differ.
Any thoughts on how it effects low speed in city steering?
Thanks for writing. Above 30 is when is was happening to me.. Watch the speedometer in the video, that may help to give you an idea of speed, etc.
Great video... but what is the windshield you are using later in the video with the Black Moulding around the edge? It's at 6:25 on the video. It does not appear to be either of the windshields you talk about earlier in the video. Is this a different model windshield? And your thoughts about it?
Same windshield, just took off the black striping that comes with it.
I personally like the removable, mostly due to the wind locking down the front end, the front is def not my favorite part.
@@bike_addict Thanks for replying.... 1 more question? Do you like the darker smokey color removeable windshield ....versus a clear one?
By Same windshield to you mean the Triumph more permanent one? Or does that black border go on the Removable windshiels?
@@paullandry5907The border is on the Triumph Permenent Long Haul screen. On the removable, I chose the tinted one because I have the black model, I think otherwise, I probably would have went with the clear one honestly. I will say that I am not a fan of the national cycle logo on there, and wish it was blank, but again, for the times i use and take off, works. And for the 10 times a summer I used it, the $120 is well worth it. I have owned it now for 3 years. I think it paid for itself, it's a little wobbly though. Just FYI, but hangs in there even at 90 mph
The rear brake pedal is to low. No real adjustment can be made.
Yes, much agree
@@bike_addict I ended up taking the assembly out n adjusting it to the safest max. Better, just not 100%
I have this problem with my 2024 bonnie
Thanks for writing, yeah, it's an issue, not sure how many folks actually check.
