I am primarily an uploader of train videos. My channel name is intended to allow me to utilize multiple genres if I have need, but by default I'm a railfan. I don't have a schedule for my videos, and it also depends on me getting a video. I also procrastinate, so occasionally I will upload a whole bunch of older videos all at once.
CSL Assiniboine - Cautious Canadian Comes to Town
Here we have the CSL Assiniboine, arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on December 16th, 2022, just 10 minutes after the Mesabi Miner departed (which was captured in my previous video - th-cam.com/video/eB-k8qrpcek/w-d-xo.html). Having waited outside the Superior entry for 3 days as a result of the storm, she was no doubt ready to come up to Duluth and load some iron ore at the CN dock (the Miner having just vacated it).
(For more context on the storm that kept shipping at a standstill, check out my previous video of the Philip R. Clarke departing - th-cam.com/video/qODukYSKTYo/w-d-xo.html)
(Apologies for the shaky cam; I did not have a proper tripod, and was reduced to handholding everything. In retrospect, maybe not the best decision. Next time I visit, I promise I'll have better equipment)
This was the fifth and final ship that I was able to witness during my vacation to Duluth. It being late morning, and having been promised an arrival so soon after the Miner's departure, the crowd of over 30 people remained to see the CSL Assiniboine arrive. As the Maritime Visitor Center docent remarks on the PA, she was traveling exceptionally slow through the ice. But, with the weather she had just had to endure that week, we can't fault her for being a little more careful, especially since the snow in the air made it virtually impossible to see beyond the end of the canal. However, that became a problem when she seemed as though she was trying to get by without a horn salute! Luckily, at the prompting from the docent, enough people waved their arms that the captain eventually sounded a deep, rumbling salute as the pilothouse passed us (indeed, right before the horn sounds, a man can be heard joking "No waving! No more waving.") After she passes under the bridge, both the tugs Missouri and Kentucky were on hand to assist, as she began her turn right out of the canal.
As the docent gives all the relevant details about the laker, I'll give what I can on the tugs:
The 88 foot Missouri was built in 1927 as the Rogers City, for one of US Steel’s corporations. After a handful of ownership and name changes, she was eventually was sold to the Great Lakes Towing Company in 1990, and renamed Missouri. She was converted from steam to diesel in 1981, and is currently powered by a 2,250 HP Alco 12-251F diesel engine.
The 84 foot Kentucky was built at the Great Lakes Towing Company’s Cleveland yard in 1929, and was converted from steam to diesel in 1959. She's powered by one Cleveland 12-278A diesel engine, making 1,250 bhp.

Saying goodbye to dad as he heads out to sea that's so cool...👍👍👍👍👍👍💓💓💓
Many years ago, I was that kid, watching my dad go off to sea for months at a time. My dad was next to me as the Clarke left, and he said of the family saying goodbye "Yeah, that gripped my throat a little bit." I've only ever been the one watching the other leave, but I imagine it's just as hard to be the one leaving.

Look at her go!! I love the crew member and his child hollering to each other!! That was precious! Love her decorations !
Now I can comment on your ship videos! 😁 Nice slow arrival there, with extra time to enjoy the view. Glad you got a salute, which is never a given with CSL ships.
Aw, shucks. Yeah, I had pretty much given up on a salute; he waited that long. Glad I was wrong, because that echo was wonderful.
It says three days ago that you posted this but three days ago I saw the Assiniboine in Port Colborne Ontario Canada Winter works. You're definitely right about the echo from the salute it sounded really good thanks for good video.
@@jayhopkins6990 Check the description; it lists the date of recording. I had some problems with my editing program that delayed the upload by over a month. I'm glad you enjoyed it though! I was glad to finally get them posted.
She's an amazing looking and sounding ship! Definitely incredible. Her horns are fabulous!
Another one cruising out in a hurry. Nice cold video of her. 😊
Just another crappy snowy day for all the ships and their crew. ❤Sail on safely 😊
Another well decorated ship, Christmas tree and lights going out with a sore throat/horn lol 😂 She tried. ❤
She is beautiful. She’s cruising in fast to make up for lost time. Thank god all of them are safe. I love the Christmas tree and the lights all around. ❤😊
I don't blame them. Those ships cost almost as much to operate sitting still as they do moving, only they don't make any money sitting still. For them to seek shelter and wait for days like that is very unusual.
Love the Christmas tree lights on the big ship 😊
I always love it when people are able to decorate the vehicles and machines they work with. When I worked for an airline, there was a pilot who would put Christmas lights against the windshield while they were on the ground. Just a little thing that adds to the experience.
True Giant,Bet the men who built her were made of pure steel...
The men who built her, sail her, and mine the ore that fills her holds.
Why does the horn sound like that ???
That's not the locomotive's horn, or even a "real" horn at all. It's a wayside horn system, which uses a recording of a horn at crossings that are in otherwise quiet zones. The WHS is aimable, so the sound is directed only at the road (or the path in this case) on both sides of the crossing. That way, the residents nearby don't get a loud horn in their home.
:D

In his defense, it was a pretty loud horn. Like I said in my description, this was one of the loudest I've ever heard. What's interesting to me though is what kind of things the viewers see that I don't. I had never noticed that guy before. And I've had several other comments on other videos pointing out weird or funny things that I'd never noticed.

Noice Video, But The Official Classification For A Train Like That (With Containers & Wellcars + Trains With Trailers) Is "Intermodal"
That's true. But there weren't any trailers or empty well cars, which makes this a unit container train, commonly referred to as a "stack train." You'll notice that some of the containers even say that. I'm not saying you're wrong, because you aren't. It's just that what you said isn't exactly applicable here.
No Intermodal Is Doesn't Have To Use All 3 It Can Just Be 1 Or 2 Or All 3
It's A FORM Of Intermodal... "Double-stack rail transport is a FORM of intermodal freight transport where intermodal containers are stacked two high on railroad cars. Introduced in North America in 1984, double stack has become increasingly common there, being used for nearly 70% of United States intermodal shipments."
I understand that, but for me, it feels less productive to group multiple permutations of various cargo under "intermodal." While it's technically correct, that means that stack trains, trailer trains, empty well car trains, and any combination thereof all get labeled as simply "intermodal." I would rather my viewers have a more specific idea of what they're watching. If someone only wants to see trailer (piggyback) trains, then I don't want them to have to sift through a bunch of "intermodal" videos to find what they want; I'd rather label the video as a trailer train, or as "mixed with trailers." It's just how I work.
Ok
no this is the same set. the set that derailed was the Mt. Adams. this is the Mt. Adams set just they changed the f40 for a charger in the night

MultiPurposeReviewer lol k
Don't take this the wrong way, but what you caught wasn't anything too special. The Horizon coaches and Ocean View (full dome) were deadheading to Los Angeles and are now running in Pacific Surfliner service. This is routine for the Holidays as Amtrak California sometimes runs out of equipment with longer Surfliner trains and thus needs to bolster its single-level fleet. When Amtrak deadheads equipment other than motive power, 90% of the time the cars will be ahead of the baggage car and that is how you can tell the equipment is being deadheaded. The 3 California Zephyr cars you saw make regular trips on the rear of the Coast Starlight as part of a charter service. Usually Silver Lariat (CB&Q CZ Dome Chair) makes the trip solo, but can be seen with with the 2 other cars available for charter, Silver Rapids (PRR Broadway Limited/CZ 10-6 Sleeper) and Silver Solarium (CB&Q CZ Dome Sleeper Lounge). Hope you found that interesting and always do your research before declaring something unusual.
Really? So the fact that this was the last Starlight to travel along the Sound is just a coincidence? I've been chasing trains up and down the Sound for a few years now, and been riding them many more years than that. Rarely are there any kind of dome cars on any train, and when there are, it's special. There are occasionally a smattering of private cars, but nothing like this. This was by far the highest concentration of exotic cars on a train that I've ever seen out here. Given that this was (supposed to be) the last time this train would ever travel along Puget Sound, I find it extremely hard to believe that all those cars were there simply by chance.
MultiPurposeReviewer Yes it was just a coincidence. There is nothing exotic about Horizon coaches or Ocean View, as Horizon coaches are common and Ocean View travels the country. The California Zephyr cars do frequently make trips on the Coast Starlight. Sometimes they don't make the entire trip and transfer to other trains to reach specific destinations, but those cars are seen quite often. I myself have seen Silver Lariat come in on #11 into Los Angeles, and that was just this summer. I know once doesn't mean much but I don't railfan often as I don't have the time.
MultiPurposeReviewer My co worker knows Amtrak crews and rode behind Ocean View today on the Pacific Surfliner, proving my earlier statement that it was just a deadhead move of Ocean View and the 4 Horizon coaches.
They're seen quite often around the system, but on any given train, they're a rarity. For instance, if Ocean View travels the country, how often does it ride with the Starlight? There's such a large number of trains in the system, even if it constantly rotated between them in the same order, it would only visit any one train every few months, which means just a few times a year. That makes it unusual. And I associate Horizonliners with the East Coast and Northeast. They are not common out here. For me, seeing them in the Pacific Northwest is a real sight.
MultiPurposeReviewer Seattle keeps a few Horizon coaches (not Horizonliners) for emergencies. They're actually pretty common on short-haul routes on the West Coast, mainly California routes but they do occasionally find themselves replacing a Talgo set when there isn't one running. The Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin use repainted Horizon Cafe/Dinettes on the Comet I sets. Rarely do Horizons run on the East Coast, if ever. The East Coast is pretty much Amfleets and Viewliners only with the only two exceptions being the Capitol Limited and the Auto Train. The biggest concentration of Horizons is in Chicago where they are used on Illinois Service (Illini, Carl Sandburg), The Missouri River Runner, Michigan routes, and the Hiawatha to name a few.
