Why I Love Making T-Shirt Quilts: The Heartfelt Reason & Behind the Scenes

I got a little emotional during my most recent t-shirt quilt. Customers send me their most prized possessions, especially those that have lost someone, and trust me to cut them up and sew them back together. It means the absolute world to me to be able to take that garbage bag full of clothing and return to them something that they can cherish forever. I am so happy to share this gift that God ...

    Quite inspirational and useful, too, but . .. isn't there a better way to attach the Quilt Block than with tape? What about sewing the quilt onto an 1/8" acid-free archival mounting board? I'd rather not laminate the quilt with interfacing and an iron. The idea is similar to stretching a canvas.

    Oh my gosh this was so helpful. I’m so glad I found this. One silly question I have is, with the blocks with the pinked sides, where does the 1/4” seam begin? I had the seams be off a bit because I had two different sizes with blocks that had the straight cut sides and the others with the pinked. Ugh I know it was hard to make the same size. 😮 sorry for being so off.

    • @southernsewingco
      @southernsewingco 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a great question! I’m sorry I didn’t address this in the video! This can be a little tricky but the best way to figure this out is to go off your cut fabric (since we are confident that it is an accurate 5”), line that up perfectly in the middle of your charm pack square and then use the cut fabric to follow along your 1/4” seam allowance. I really should have mentioned this in the video! I may do another video about this soon!

    • @southernsewingco
      @southernsewingco 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Welcome!! I'm so glad you found me! To be honest, I rarely mess with the presser foot pressure. The only time I've messed with it was when using a walking foot when I noticed that my machine was moving around kind of squirrely (if that makes sense lol). In this case, I adjusted it a little more so it held my quilt together a little better and didn't let it bounce around so much! For FMQ, I've never seen this as an issue though. I hope this helps!

    Your video just popped up in my feed. What great tips and easy to see sewing. I will follow and watch the entire series, but when you FMQ a quilt, do you start in the corner as you do on the sample shown? Thanks

      I’m so glad you found me! That’s a great question that I didn’t go over, and I’m glad you pointed that out! I typically start in the corner but I know other quilters that start in the middle. I’ve just always started in the corner so it’s kind of a habit at this point but no particular reason other than that. You’ll have to let me know what you think about the series!

      @@southernsewingco I have been practicing FMQ but need to graduate to a quilt. I think starting in a corner will be easier. Also. Loved how you focused on completing the circle, keeping the spacing pleasing, etc. I look forward to watching your series/content.

      Some do start in the middle with the mentality that the Quilt won’t ever be harder than it is right then. You could probably try a smaller maybe baby quilt, as those are lighter and easier to move around! You got this! Thank you for taking the time to watch these videos. It means so much

    How far down from the collar should you place a name for an adult? Trying to make matching mama and baby sweaters 😊

      Hey! I haven’t exactly measured to say for sure! But I’m usually trying to make it right across the chest and in line with the armpit area!

    Can I use a thicker thread to embroider on a sweatshirt. I feel the DMC was too thin

      Oh sure!! Sometimes I even like to use yarn and it works well also.

      What thread do you suggest. But not yarn

      DMC Pearl is thicker than regular DMC gloss. You can try that! I’m linking an example! They range in sizes. amzn.to/44mgrMP

    Have you ever used a different font? I’m not liking the way it does some letters on the name I’m doing!

      hey! I definitely use different font sometimes, especially because they really just look funny sometimes! Scroll through Canva and see what you might like, playing with the different fonts. If you know you like calligraphy or handwritten fonts, type that into the search bar and Canva and see what you can find! I hope this helps.

      I did try Oblique Rain and Heavenfield recently and liked them both! I usually click around until I find one. It takes a minute with some name 😂
