SR71 Pilots Symposium 2023 Evergreen Air & Space Museum
A group of USAF SR-71 Pilots, SRO's, and Crew Chiefs gathered in Oregon last year for a weekend of meetings and talks. They were set up next to SR-71A s/n 61-7971 at the Evergreen Air and Space Museum in McMinnville Oregon. There were talks and guided tours of the jet. Arnie Gunderson was there from Pratt & Whitney. He worked on the program in the 60's. We were able to talk to pilot Buzz Carpenter for several minutes. Great guy, very down to earth and willing to talk about anything airplanes.
They had a large set of airstairs with both cockpits open. Visitors were allowed to wait their turn for a visit to the top where SR71 Pilots and RSO's were answering questions all day.
I will never forget this day.
This channel spends most of it's time covering aircraft that I find in my travels. I am particularily interested in the stories and pictures of an individual aircraft and it's post military history. This channel is working to provide a current video look-see of real airplanes. It is a special moment when we meet museum staff that allows us addition "behind the scenes" access to these vintage aircraft. It is the hugest fun ever to do this kind of work and it would seem that many people are interested in my amatuer enthusiasm. I do not preport to be an expert in anything but please come along for the ride and see what we get up to. Recently we rode dirtbikes out to the XB-70 crash site memorial and ain Atwater we got inside a SAC USAF B-36 bomber. That's our highlight so far. Please hit SUBSCRIBE to help us along.

There are several different versions of the engines used non 262's. The early ones wore out fast and that's possibly all that was left when the war was over. Metals were developed to deal with the heat and the Luftwaffe was able to produce motors with a 100 hour TBO. That's what they were flying at the end of the war. Very low number produced.

A few comments from a Dane ;-) 1:09 The sticker is from the workshop who maintained them - KAR stands for Karup ( Denmark) Main base for F-35 Drakens in Denmark, FVK simply says ''flight workshop kommand''. 1:20 The little censor is a distance radar measurer for the gunsight, and the camera is not a targeting camera, but a real recce camera. There was mor than one camera. This jet is actually a RF-35. No targeting radar as the F-35 had. 3:09 The 35XD is the special Danish version with the bigger engine, and A/G cabebilleties, and upgraded INS nav system. 3:23 They did not have a problem with tailstrake, because it was designed from the beginning with the tailwheels. That's why you could tell on the radio whenever there was a Draken in the padern '' Viking 35, final - four greens'' . The idea to the jet came up during ww2 - loooong before Chock Y passed the M1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_35_Draken

Good comment. But the actual one is two seated trainer. And the AT in the tailnumber indicates Trainer. Recognissance was AR on the tail and an A indicates Fighter Bomber version. All Danish Drakens got an update. And the nose received a Laser Range Finder. After that modifikation all Danish Drakens had merely the same nose.

The problem though is this as well as all deltas have to destroy a significant amount of their lift to pitch up, and thus have to have a larger wing than is necessary which negates the advantage of having to “carry” the negative lift of a conventional tail. The F-16 was a tailed delta like the Mig-21 it was specifically designed to fight against. This allows for 100% of the wing to produce lift.

Cool walkaround, fun to see one of the NTPS Drakens. Some random facts: - Saab-Scania was Saabs parent company up until the 1990s, it was a merger between Saab (aircraft, cars) and Scania (trucks). The companies then split again. The cars had the full name on the hood badge for many years. The Saab griffin logo is still used by both companies today. - The Draken was optimized for interception, the double delta wing shape was very good for climb, speed and short takeoffs/landing. - The small tail landing gear was added from the J35 B model and onwards, when Draken got a bigger afterburner. - The Draken was capable of supercruise. - Swedish models carried an early digital modem, for receiving data showing altitude, range and direction of a target, sent from a ground station. It could also send non-voice commands for the pilot. - The aircraft can be taken apart at the middle for easier transport. - The final version was the J35J model, which came after the J35F. The reason why they jumped from "F" to "J" is that by this time the Draken would only serve at one airforce wing, F10 in Ängelholm - and J is the 10th letter of the alphabet. F10 has since been shut down, but the facilities is now home to Koenigsegg, a sports car manufacturer.

The Griffin logo comes from Scania and it is the coat of arms of Skåne county in Sweden. Skåne, funnily enough, is translated to Scania in english. Saab logo used to be twin engine aircraft until the merger with Scania. The first Saab 99:s still have the aircraft logo In Finland, Valmet built 12 planes and 32 single seaters with 5 Cesars (2 seat trainer) was purchased from Sweden. Finnish Air Force used them between 1972 - 2000

From Wikipedia: Saab 35XD (Xerxes David) was an export fighter bomber version of the Saab 35F for the Royal Danish Air Force. X stands for export and D for Denmark. It competed and won against the Mirage III and the Northrop F-5 in 1968.

Hi from a Finnish Draken pilot. Nice walkaround! Those stripes along the front leading edge were actually guides (reflecting) for night flying purposes. Those double tail wheels vere for the use of aerodynamic braking (stic way back) before the wheel brakes vere allowed to be used. Realy a great fighter designed by the Saab! Cheers.

A story I'v heard is that the early models, short tail, would run out of fuel before they stopped accelerating. That is, they had an undetermined top speed. Not sure to what extent this is true, if at all.

@@HomemadeAviationMovies Only the car part. SAAB is a long story. Basically, it started as a military airplane manufacturer, started up a car business, and merged with Scania-Vabis. Split away the truck business to a separate company. Then, sold SAAB cars to GM. Purchased more military equipment manufacturers in Sweden including a submarine producer (Kokums). So it is split-offs, mergers, sales reorganizing, etc over the last 75 years... I am not even sure I got everything correct.
