    When one says, “no attempt at detail” I often find it a bit presumptuous. The right brush stroke or mark, with the right value, hue, and chroma, in the right place can often be the detail that is true and necessary for the painting. I suppose a criticism pointing out a lack of an attempt at something is itself an impressionistic and nondescript point to make in itself.

    Thank you for lingering on the paintings and explaining the colors and forms (as much as possible). It's much easier to see the architectonic structures and colors when a viewer is given the time needed to absorb it. Your selection of paintings is very strong, that is, I like almost all of them.

    Comme Manet toujours avait l'habitude de dire "J'ai toujours trouvé adorables les prostituées -en depit de la syphilis qu'elles m'avaient transmisée." The seemingly oh-so posh British accent of the narrator notwithstanding ...

    Dear Mr. Humphreys. Thank you for this talk. I have seen Friedrichs Paintings in Berlin as well as in Hamburg. Your are absolutely right about the colours in digital reproductions. It's very often made lighter than in reality. I am a fan of modern art but I believe that, what you so vividly described with being out of balance when looking at the paintings, works better than beauty over time. Fashion will change but we will always retain our primal instincts. My very best wishes to you.

    Thank you! Hope you can make a video about Anthony van Dyck. His brushwork is worth seeing, so playful and free spirited. I saw Shiele’s work in Neue Gallerie NY and in person it is extremely unpleasant. Which means it has an emotional response on a viewer.

    I don't understand the term "wrong" when looking at paintings. An artist has no bounds. Photography's job is to show realism, not painting. Nothing is "wrong" in art.

    I have to admit I laughed at some of the paintings, but when Rousseau applies his style in the right way, like the jungle paintings, he creates some of the most remarkable images in the history of art. Thanks for this one.

    Facts: The Elevation of The Cross and The Descent from The Cross are featured in an obscure novel called A Dog of Flanders Those paintings were stolen in 1914 by the German Army and then taken to the Kaiser's palace in Berlin. They were not returned until after the Armistice in 1918.

  • @edwardcabras
    @edwardcabras 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I really enjoy your presentational style. You show the full painting when most videos zoom in too much and show people talking or random shots of a city instead of lingering on the actual work. And of course its relevant to talk about the artist's life too, but you talk mostly about the actual painting, which is what I want to hear. Great job.

    Only non-artists call anything by Latrec impressionist. Why are these put on by people who are dead and deaf to art? The only person who could begin would be an artist drug addict and criminally perverse! Go man go! People know so little about art and what they do know is all wrong. Paint them but don't listen to them. Smoke opium and drink real absinthe. Real Absinthe has real psychedelics in it. Beta-Asarone is the precursor of TMA-2..If you wish to get close Old Vermouth is a good substitute. Artemsia Absinthium, Wormwood is not necessary. Calamus root is the essential ingredient. With the drugs in real Vermouth. The old dark yellow Gin was pretty psychedelic too. I just a bored chemist and Ethnobotanist. Try real Absinthe once at least. Even if you have to make it. I used a recipe from 1865. They had eighteen recipes and more for the Greek Desuchio, at163 proof. Greece, you say you went there or used it? TEHE!

    Not sure when this video was produced, but Almond Tree in Blossom is not in the Louvre, which relocated most paintings dated from 1848 on to the Musee d'Orsay in the 1980s. So, in Paris, if you want to see late 19th Century art and on... go to Musee d'Orsay.
