2024 05 Making Spotted pond inside the greenhouse.
A quick video because someone asked about ponds in greenhouses, in doing so I found a cameo appearance of Elmar Meier to whom I can trace my animals way back in the 80's.. A very talented keeper.

Clemmys guttata moved to a new quarter in the greenhouse.

After some dozen years in the Dome, the growth of local trees was beginning to reduce light. So I moved them to the more open greenhouse. Again I am providing land as well more than one water option. The pond area is newly planted, with time the lad will become suitably overgrown. Basking areas will also have visual breaks so that one animal will not necessarily be able to see another basking.

This is an update for Joseph who gave me this little girl. Firstly the 8ft viv is not a problem and she seems quite at home. Then the brightest spot, under the Arcadia LED strip does not bother her, in the same spot there is also a small spot LED and a 50w Tungsten. The secret is to offer security and time. The rest resolves itself. Its early October and time to prepare for hibernation.

These two Ackies are clearly fond of each other. I was looking for them expressing a preference for a particular strength of lamp in the morning. This behaviour I have seen quite often, but thought it worthwhile recording this time. Taken in April 2023.

Basking spot temperatures and power density

November 2022 one of many runs where three lamp types, an MVB, an HID and a LED are offered and the pair of Ackies then chooses where they bask. I just need to count the visits over the course of the video. Repeat the test many times and then take an average.

LED lamp Vs sunlight, the shadow test
มุมมอง 1292 ปีที่แล้ว
A quick and dirty test to compare brightness of an LED Vs the early morning sun. Both the reading under the lamp and the sun were about, 98000 lux. Our problem was that the Power Density readings were way too small for the lamp and we need to understand why.
Ackies using lamp and heat.

Once the Ackies are up to temerature they then manage their body temp by not being in the sunshine but staying somewhere somewhat warm. I ve seen this over and over in the viv and I think now beginning to understand it.

I love it Roman. Is this your breeding group?
Its part of it. 1st and second generation. I have too many really, its hard to let go.
Are the water lelies not toxic for the turtles?
@@peterminnes4227 no they are not, often earliest clue that hibernation is over are bites on the new leaves.
Nice enclosure..👊
Great to see some more videos Roman
👏🏽
Glad to see you and the herps are doing well!
Looking good Rom 👏
I am very interested in keeping spotted turtles in the uk would love to get any advice for doing this.
Great work Roman
Hi Christopher, yes absolutely right. 1) Recommending the power density for your animals is extremely tricky because the understanding of solar power in the course of the day and in the course of the year is shrouded with misconceptions. One could, as I have done, simply take a set of values that are deemed to be an average set by the insolation industry - and set them out as the standard set; so IRa values from say 200w/msq to 400w/msq would work. Indeed, I have found these values in tests with some dozen species, and about 250w/msq was their preference. BUT, but, there is an elegance in nature in how solar power works; and that discussion has not yet been touched upon. I thought this may have been simple to state, but as always, the obvious has trickery behind it. That change in wavelength ratios as the day progresses also changes with seasons in the same way, and to mess with our heads even more, the intensity changes also. So to get back to offering a guide that people can use is taking time, a year so far, but this is important to get right. In the meantime, the numbers I would use are 250 w/msq. for temperate animals, moving toward 350w/msq for desert lovers. That should be the reading in the centre of the basking spot, with cooler options in the periphery. Cooler shelters areas must also be provided as even in the hottest desert many animals can shelter in cooler, more humid burrows. 2)With a PD meter its easy to measure the strength of a lamp. A visit to Reptile Lighting FB page will turn up measurements that have been made on the more common lamps. I am hoping the industry will include PD readings for their tungsten/halogen lamps with time, printed on the side of the box, just as is done for UV lamps.
Hi Roman, sorry I've only just seen this but thank you for your detailed reply, makes total sense! Since watching this video and keeping up with the info on Reptile Lighting, I have switched to heating/lighting all my animals this way and have noticed a marked improvement in their behaviour (the collared lizards especially appreciate access to this day long radiation rather than having the bulb dim once the enclosure/basking area hits the "correct temperature"). Yes, hopefully the manufacturers will soon start to put this info onto their packaging as it really is valuable stuff. Thanks again for all the work you and the Reptile Lighting team do and for sharing the knowledge. It's most appreciated! 🙂
Awesome thanks a lot for this Roman, really interesting... So am I right in thinking that what the hobby could do with (in order to help us hobbyists select basking bulbs more appropriately), is 1) a recommended power density basking guide for each species. And 2) What power density each manufacturer's bulb provides at certain distances? (Much like what has happened for uvi exposure and uvb tubes etc.) Thanks.
Exactly, we are still developing the best methodology to share with the wider public.
Can you explain the lighting used in the brightest spot again? I heard an Arcadia bar lamp that’s not LED and a 50 watt halogen?
OK thanks for your question, my note was a bit hurried. It's a test vivarium and had 3 similar positions to allow inmates to choose which lamp set-up they prefer. I'm shutting it down for hibernation, so only the middle location is running near full configuration. The central basking spot is a controlled temperature heat rock set at 20c. In the back I have an Arcadia strip LED (Jungle Dawn I think its called). I front of it I have a smaller LED pointing at the basking spot, I also have a 50w Tungsten lamp pointing at the same spot, together they raise the surface temperature to about 30c. (it showed 27.9) Dotty, the Gecko chose to sit on the rock in a partial cryptic position, and it had a secure escape route planned. She has been in the viv about 2 weeks now and is just venturing out. I have seen her sneaking about the middle a couple of times.
@@zaba1959 So the middle basking spot is setup the same way that it would ideally be set up for a sun loving reptile like say a bearded dragon, with a small spot that has a strong LED lamp like Sansi?
@@gryllidaeperkcal1369Sorry I missed your question. I have used Sansi and like them and so did my beardie. I used a 50 watt incandescent to provide IRa. Many of the LEDs that I have used from China change names, A similar lamp called Daskoo I tested and liked, it has since morphed, been renamed and surprisingly gone up in price considerably.
Yay! 😁
How old is the gecko?
a few years old. I have no idea.
Thanks for sharing, Roman
Aren't they choosing the mvb on temperature and Kelvin. 1 to 2 degrees hotter. There is no 7000 K T5HO unit either.
Before I reply, I don't seem to see where you get 7000k from. The T5 may well have an equivalent kelvin value of 7000k. Of course its not a black body.
Also could you explain what you mean by temperature and Kelvin. The temperature of what?
id love to see you include a royal python into this
I dont have Royals Im afraid.
Now watching this (one on the MVB) the female? Paul burrows btw!
Thank you for this! Should we be pairing a Tungsten Halogen Lamp with a Deep Heat Projector to increase available IR-B to more closely mimic the sun? Or is a halogen and UVB sufficient? Given the current technology available, it’s my understanding that a Tungsten/Halogen, DHP, and UVB working together is the closest replication of the sun we can get in a vivarium. Is this correct?
For full spectrum , provide a UVb lamp, a visible light lamp such as an LED, make it a bright spot lamp shining onto the basking spot, then onto the same spot shine a tungsten/halogen lamp. The heat projector may be useful for providing heat at night if you feel you need it.
Thank you for sharing, this was helpful. I had been wondering about how the pangea store brand would measure up to the Arcadia, and this gives me a pretty good idea. Also, it was really helpful to know more about how they work, especially how wide the heat goes. I am doing my best to learn more about reptile heating and will be checking out more of your videos. I found you from a question and answer article (not sure what magazine? ) you wrote on reptile heating, referenced by Bio Dude. It also is helpful, and I will be referring back to it.
Thank you for this very thorough explanation of light - heating - dimming!
Thank you very much for your comparison. I am building the next enclosure for my snake and want to be sure to do the better heating and lighting for her. It's videos like yours, that show the science behind, that helps.
Just finished watching it all. The science of reptile lighting finally makes more clear sense and is reassuring to know with regards to the husbandry of my Leopard Gecko. Thank you Roman. Checked Mr Jinx tonight, still in his log den after over 2 months, happy as ever! 🤣 Though I'm almost freezing, but it's doing me more good than harm I guess.. 😂
Mine is about to go down now. Slowly dropping temps and light.
I hope you brits have a nice holiday.🙂🎄
I prefer to have North West European species, but I'd make an exception for this North American species, they're stunning and not too big as adult.
Very interesting

I would love to work with spotted turtles one day- they are so cold tolerant here in the U.S. Could you explain the unusual winter weather you’ve been having in the UK that you think led to the winter kill? Thanks!
Yes it went warm and they got active, then it turned cold for a long time. I think this played a a factor.

Where's the chinese leopard snakes?
I had used them as a complete novice to just see how they behave in a bigger vivarium. They have moved to a friend who specialises in rat snakes.
Did you give them to Francis Cosquieri?
@@monsterkajiu1912 I did. I am hoping he breeds from them as they were most engaging and gave me a lot of pleasure. I am unable to keep snakes due to a domestic phobia.
I have a question, which bulb is best for visible light metal halides or spot LEDs?
@@monsterkajiu1912 Count the visits to the different spots over the course of a day. th-cam.com/video/4Cnm0COUG_s/w-d-xo.html
Hi roman, I have a quick question, which is better for obtaining visible light metal halides or spot LEDs?
Really interesting design and very well built. Unlike a glass terrarium it can be easily moved should the need arise. My large glass terrarium filled with rocks, soil, plants etc is pretty much impossible to move unless I dismantle it, which after all the work put in, I don't want to do unless essential!
Thank you for sharing, this was a very interesting watch. Learnt a lot about how each functions too. Hope you have a good Christmas!
Great video Roman thankyou and merry Christmas
Thank you for looking into this and explaining your findings.

I love that you give us the numbers and details much appreciated
So any news yet... did they work out to be different sexes due to incubation temps

Are the fans connected to the on and off thermostat?
Yes
My experience observing similar set-ups has been the same. Sometimes the snakes use the RUBs as hides or to rest on top of it they don’t choose to live in them.
Would you be willing to share a part list for your lighting build?
so cool that must have taken a long time to build
