A Simple Odyssey
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 ก.ย. 2012
The videos on this channel are a way to chronicle my adventures throughout Nevada, California, and beyond, well beyond. There'll be camping, hiking, and whatever else crosses my path. I'm not a bushcrafter, nor am I an expert on the outdoors. I'm simply a guy that's tired of wasting away his life by sitting in a recliner watching the world go by. I intend to reach back twenty years and find that spark that seems to have been lost. I can't change the past, but I can shape the future.

It was fun to see your video I started going to Sierra City in about 1960 with my parents. My grandfather had a cabin at the west end of town, As a child, he used to take a train from San Jose to Sacramento, then take a stage coach from Sacramento to the family house in Sierra City. The Sierra City Hotel used to be called the Sierra Buttes Inn and had the only restaurant in town. The old brick building with the steel doors was very dilapidated and was the old Wells Fargo building. At one time the Hayes family owned 13 gold mines in the area, with the one at the lowest elevation being right on Hiway 49 by the little creek the crosses under the highway south of town. The old Hayes family house was just below that elevation. level, going toward the Yuba River.
Thank you for that story. I always appreciate personal stories. They add another layer to the video. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Very interesting. Did you make the video yourself? If so Im impressed. Regards from Ody Slim
Hello Ody, yeah, I'm trying to figure out how to work with AI generated images. I can't afford to travel right now, so...I'm learning to use AI software. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it, there's more to come: good, bad, or otherwise. 😎. Thanks for watching. Who knows what's next?
Thank you for giving us a look at the little town of Luning. I have driven by there many times myself, wondering what there was to explore. I like that you are willing to walk around a little "blink & miss" place like that. Safe travels, and thanks again.
@@edvonp I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Is the restaurant still open?
@@BlackdogADV I believe so. But I can't say for sure. Anyway, thanks for watching.
I’ve lived in Doyle and Herlong (the town right next to Doyle) my whole life. I even lived at the winje’s store at one point and my mom and step dad ( Jeff Winje ) ran the store for Jeff’s dad, Mike, who was the owner. Unfortunately it had to be sold. Even when I was a kid ( I’m only 18 now ) it was amazing. The store was up and running, there was a cafe, there is a community center, and there is still Doyle days which is a little kind of fair with music and dancing, lots of games, plenty of food and things to buy. It’s amazing and there is much more to explore around there.
Excellent story. Thank you for sharing. I enjoy reading stories like yours: it gives the video another layer of interest. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
saw one in 59 north of Seattle ,it walked past me in the woods about 15 yds. away.i was siting under a big fir tree in the needles...
It's amazing how many people have stories of Bigfoot encounters. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Great stories, I just wish they didn’t make them look like gorillas
I seen one in 2020.
Once you see one, you never forget. 👍 thanks for listening.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Good story. Never a good thing to come upon one of these creatures. Sounds like your guardian angel showed himself to that creature. I hear they are big too. 😊

I heard that 1972 was when Silver Springs became a town. I moved here in 1993. Where the Pizza Factory is used to be a donut shop where the Silver Strike is there used to be a casino called Pipers and that was the place to be. Were the Nugget is used to be a smoke shop.
Thanks for the info. I enjoy reading comments like yours. It's a layer that adds to the video. Thank you for watching.
Fun fact. Those streets used to be 2 way
Yes road trip Wednesday. When you pulled in by Lake Tahoe i was wondering if we would see aliens crawling out of the lake or an alien spacecraft flying out based on past weeks adventures any way thank you for the road trip i remember some when i was in the area 🇺🇸😀

I want to live in Winnemucca; it's fantastic.
It's a great drive.
Hello, my name is Jeffrey and I live in Germany. My father died shortly after I was born. I recently found out that he grew up in Quincy, California. His name was Arthur Goodhall. He went to high school there until 1981. Did any of you know him? I would be happy about an answer.
Well, Jeff, I never met him. But, maybe one of my viewers did know him. Thank you for watching the video, and thank you for your comment. I hope somebody out there knew your dad.
Some info about the place. ** 1. The population is probably nearby farms. ** 2. The owner is in his 90s, as far as I know. ** 3. Based on pictures I found on my first non-recorded trip, the bar looked like it used to be a huge deal. Very busy. ** 4. The little room off of the store was some sort of tiny kitchen. I'm guessing for the workers maybe. Because it used to have a stove, sink, dishes, etc. ** 5. I made a lot of phone calls to places in the area, including government, and made posts to local Facebook pages, trying to find out about the fire. I never did find out what happened. But the building that burned used to be like a duplex for railroad workers. So when they stopped there, they could swap workers. I originally checked the place out because I seen it was for sale many years ago and I was curious. I found out that it was shut down in 1997. Then in 2018 when I started my TH-cam channel, I stopped as we were driving by, so I could record the area. Some of my camera footage was damaged and lost, and all the sound was corrupted. I knew nothing about editing back then, so I couldn't salvage any of the audio. So my first video on the place, just has "music" in the background. I did go back to record again years later and the footage vanished before I could get home to Alturas. I was finally able to get usable footage in 2022. By then, the cabin/apartment by the pumps had burned down. I did get some footage of it, in the first video. Looked like people were using it to dump all their household trash they didn't want. Clothes, paperwork, toys, dishes, some actual trash, etc. P.S. If anybody checks out my two videos or any other videos on my channel, please be kind. I'm learning how to record and edit. Huge step from 7 years ago, when nobody was even allowed to take my picture.
@@stephaniemhoover4741 thank you for the information. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
@@eagleteam6 I'm always looking for more video of the place. I swear I see something different in every video and every time I go there.

Tour bus, eh? Yup, stamp mill. Wonder where the underground workings were?
Look for large piles of rocks and dirt!
Someones nice home until it was trashed, what dreams they had it was probably nice at one time.😊
@DianeLawrence-d1x First, thank you for watching the video. Whenever I look at these abandoned places, I often consider the lives of the people who lived there. It must've been difficult. Thank you for your comment.
I just love exploring Nevada Desert in the fall an winter months, to see where people lived an what they did.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching. 👍
i'm 64 yrs. old now but i spent a night in union with my family as a kid around 1971-1972. i slept next to an old brick bldg. that had a plaque inside stating that "samuel clements" (mark twain) had stayed a few nights there. a lot of silver and copper mines in that area. at that time there were still a few houses with folks still livingt there full time but it was already recognized as an official ghost town.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing a personal story. I enjoy reading personal accounts of the places I visit. Thank you for watching.
Nice to see a new adventure never know what is on those left and right turns while exploring love your talks along the way 😀
@casedoumasr656 thank you for the compliment.. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 👍
The carcass at 08:40, next to the auger, is a mower frame. The open gear would most likely make it a John Deere #4. A few other manufactures also had an open gear box, so with out stamped numbers hard to say. 10:40 more the same. Nice little stop.
Thanks for the info. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.
Lots of fun explores in NV.
I agree. This state is amazing. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment.
I passed by there last time the drove through Hwy 50. Wished I stopped to check it out. I’ll check it out next time I fly back in the southwest since I’m planning to retire in Nevada.
Cyanide smells like almond extract or cherries. Hard to describe odors.
That's what we were thinking. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Visiting those places is interesting. Thanks for watching, and thank you for the comment.
The Stamp Mill must have been removed. Hills of slag.
Hello glad to see your back and found a mine way out in the middle of Nevada from what you say the military wants to buy it so then this is privately owned .Still nice seeing things from lond ago 🇺🇸🤔 yes Roaming people be ware out there
Yeah, unfortunately, eminent domain is likely in play. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.

Thinking about moving to Silver Springs, this video was highly informative since we're viewing from New York. Thank you! We were out there last year and loved it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
A nice little town. I have been there several times before, and heading back tomorrow. Can't wait to get there!
It is a nice place: quiet, no traffic. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Ive been going to this town since I was a little girl with my parents and sister. My dad had a friend that owned the Taylor's house. We would go up every summer. When I turned about 42, I left the Bay Area and moved to Plumas County near Graeagle. I never went back. Ive been here 20 years now. My sister has a house between Sierra City and Downieville. I love this area. I hope you went on Gold Lake Rd. and checked out Sand Pond and Sardine Lake and the resort behind it. You have a beautiful view of the Buttes from there.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
Next time go down the ally way by the bank and restaurant, there is a patio are to set by the rive. Also go through the bar and onto their pation in back by the river. The river runs behind all those shops. Also by the courthouse there are gallos.
They drain the Lake about every two years or so to make sure the parasites are all gone.
A nice tour. Very quiet there. What day of the week was it?
Lovelock is always quiet: except during Burning Man. I was sometime during the week...probably on a Tuesday. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
My grandmother was born in Silver City Nevada in 1894
I’ll never be there myself, but love to see it.
Really enjoying the videos.
Thank you.
Would be interesting to hear some stats on the towns you’re visiting. (Population, average temp., crime, main business, cost of homes). Well done!! You have the perfect voice and cadence (reminds me of the Waltons), just need a better camera.
Thank you for the compliments. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. Thank you for watching.
