The slab you were wondering about was the Cattlemen's cafe. Best place to eat through the late 60s.
thank you that helps will let people know on a future video
@@route66roadrelics66 I lived in Truxton in the early 70's...mom and dad worked at the truxton station and truxton cafe. Back then the school only had 2 rooms but we only used 1. 17 kids in 1st - 6th grade in 1 room with 1 teacher. The small building connected to the Cafe used to be living quarters with a rock fence out front. Met Steve McQueen there, watched Ralph Hunter catch fire in the Texico and used to sell cactus to the travelers from the east coast who had never seen cactus before. I sat in some of the cars you show in the video. Ray Barker spent most of his day hiding from Mildred because she would put him to work. He would come in the cafe smelling of cigarettes, aqua velva, and brycreme. He always had a smile on his face.
Graffiti is like tattoos.

i want to ride my H-D to the grand canyon zip-lines ... i just can't get away though, it would have to be a shorter vacation.
@@RulgertGhostalker one of these days it will happen
@@route66roadrelics66 I could hope so... it's looks like an interesting journey all along the way also.
@@RulgertGhostalker it is one thing a lot of people do is break it up in sections they do every year too instead of all at once
@@RulgertGhostalker you might like this video about the Arizona sidewinder th-cam.com/video/-Ohssdk1Lmw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ov49OZjkwK5zCt5i
@@route66roadrelics66 well, yeah...I would probably only ride 5 to7 hours a day, depending on how I felt, and the weather....I certainly could not ride from Wisconsin to the SW all in one shot...I would do camp grounds, grocery stores, laundromats, and the occasional restaurant to spoil myself when I need it.
What are your best budget travel tips?
I'm back Big Mike! So glad to see this video. I just found it because as you know I just subscribed about a week ago or so. My Route 66 road trip is now about 5 or 6 months away. Can't wait!
Awesome! Thank you!
Greetings from Salinas Pueblo. I am currently doing a video of our visit to this unique place. Love your video and appreciate your hard work. I started my own travel channel in January and look forward to hitting 1000 subs and the 4000 watch hours. I love the challenge and especially enjoy sharing this gorgeous country with as many people as I can. I have gobs of information and experience because I’ve traveled this country fulltime for over 31 years and been to over 250 National Parks, all of the ones in New Mexico, hundreds of State Parks and other public hiking locations. Many of which you have been to. Safe travels to you. Edit on!
Good luck on your channel, thanks for watching.
Oatman was my hometown through the 90s. I've got many great memories of my time along the Mother Road.
Great memories
Stopped there when I was a kid several times. Big fun.
@@icescrew1 good memories
Old dream of mine was being able to take all of 66 in its prime. See all the small towns at their peak

Thank you for such a wonderful video, Big Mike! I turned 70 in July and retired on August 1st. For many years, I've planned to take my first big road trip after retirement along Route 66. I'll be selling my home in the Spring and moving to St. George, UT where I'll settle for good after a very successful business career. I can't wait to hit the road and I must say, your video makes me wish it was Spring already. Thanks!
You are welcome you will Love it Thanks for Watching
Thanks Big Mike!
You're welcome!
It’s like a museum of bad ideas.

Interesting but the background music is too loud. Had to turn it off after 2 minutes.
Sorry it was one if my earlier videos but if you check out ourlatest videos i think the music will be fine thanks for watching
The Eisenhower Administration was responsible for getting our U.S. highways built. But you did a great job keeping Rt. 66 nostalgia alive 👍❤️🇺🇸
@@BrianKay-i9m thanks
I worked in a Deep Rock gas station on US-66 in Oklahoma City in 1966 and 67. I-40 was under construction but not yet open any further west. The station was 24/7 until 1967. We pumped gas, washed windshields and even vacuumed out customers cars on request. There was a hoist and a tire changing machine. Gas was $0.25.9 except during gas wars.
Good memories!
You missed so many in New Mexico, most of which are still open, most notably the Blue Swallow motel in Tucumcari and 2 in Santa Rosa that are also still open for business, the La Loma and the La Mesa. Still a very interesting video.
you can check out our other videos about those motel i was doing the closed motels for this video thanks for watching th-cam.com/video/65HW3-rTvXI/w-d-xo.html
In May I have to make a run from OK to CA for my daughter’s wedding. Plan has been to take the Electra Glide, think I’m gonna run 66. Thanks!
Sounds like a great trip, good luck with the wedding!
There's not really much left to run. All the highway signs are gone except for paint on the road and what is left is in bad repair.
@johngaither9263 go check out my website www.route66roadrelics.com almost 85% of Route 66 is still there lots of stuff to. See but often names of roads ect have changed
Great stuff Mike!!
Thanks
I love the history facts and the black and white! Nice!
thanks Linda
Where's tow mater at? 👍🇺🇸
Well done, cheers.
Appreciate it
My father drove the family through Truxton in 1975 on the way from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon. I remembered the name of the town, and stopped by a cafe there in 2007 on the way from the Denver area to Los Angeles.
good memories
They should use a cars theme and have a car show every other weekend. It'll make it back on the map. My kid is 8 months old, and I've seen it probably a couple hundred times in four months 🫣
Seligman az or galena kansas both have lots
I remember Whiting Bros and Terrible Herbst stations when they were in operation. There is still what's left of a Whiting Bros station and motel on a side road along the east bound lanes of I 40 around Yucca, AZ
Cool memories
I live in Kingman now, but I remember driving from New York to St Louis where I would pick up Route 66 on the way to LA several times before I 40 was built. I'll be up in Seligman for the Fun Run next May.
Nice
Great stop! There's so many great joints along Route 66
yes there is
Hi big mike good to see the old station being restored . Cheers mate🇦🇺
yes it is a good project they are doing
I live the black and white.
Thanks
I actually drove by it myself on the way to Arizona. It was in better shape back then but not by much cool place.
Its a interesting place
Thanks
Thank you for watching
Just some constructive feedback. This video would really benefit from some pictures of this place throughout the years. Maybe even a nice drone shot or overhead view where you can point out certain things about it
Thanks for the feedback i am working in doing some drone footage the old photos are a little tougher copyright issues thanks for the input
Nice edit Big Mike!
Glad you liked it!
So much to learn with editing
It’s amazing how the movie “Cars” has sparked so much interest in 66!
Yes it does help
The Esso gas station, when you filled up and they pumped your gas they gave you a tiger keychain. The keychain actually had a tiger on it. Wish I could find mine.
Good memories
F Troop was filmed in Los Angeles at Warner Brothers Studios western town. A funny show!
Yes it was this place was made as a knock off i believe
Things have sure changed! I’m 72 and I remember a lot of this when it was operational 🎉
True true
My parents use to take Route 66 back in the early 1950's and told me stories of their adventures taking road trips. My dad's brother also drove Route 66 as a long-haul trucker and he loved to stop in those towns along Route 66.
Good memories
A lot of good 66 stuff I have never seen in other videos. Nice job!🎉
Thank you
yeah.., this is what non-thinking, unintelligent fahrt sniffing disrespectful immature, paint huffing a-holes like to destroy..
Sucks.
Went there as a teenager with my parents .
