Airspeed & Altitude: We're Just Getting Started
Come on guys, much to do about nothing.I owned an ecroupe for a while and was an instructor in alon's for a year or so. Great airplane do not act stupid!
My first ride in a small aircraft was in an Ercoupe in 1958. I was 11yo, the plane belonged to a friend of my dad who took me up.
Hey..I would love flying that Ercoup😊
I helped rescue a 415C in 1993 and I'd not recommend starting a NEW pilot off in the no rudder pedal design. It's like going from automatic transmission to standard shift - to me, a lot more difficult. I got my license in 172's. No ball - stepping !
Not all CFI know what they are doing. This guy is scary. Spent 95% of his time aloft with “his head in the cockpit.” Even in the pattern, he should be looking out for other traffic. Scary guy.
I'm not sure the Ercoupe not ("Air Coupe"), was ever billed as stall proof. I do believe spin proof was in the marketing. Since anything will stall in a specific configuration, it would be dubious, at least, to claim anything is stall proof other than the ground you are standing on - and even with that, it would be only for as long as the ground was on the ground.
It not suppose to be stall proof it suppose to be SPIN proof!
Flaps?
GOD BLESS AMERICA 🇺🇸 🦅 FROM PAKISTAN 🇵🇰
Without a rudder……how would you recover from a spin?
Congratulations….. Your videos brought back good memories of my 415E model (with the cut out elevator) which I owned in 2010 for several years. Quirky maybe but great fun to fly after retiring from a military and civil flying career involving everything from DHC Chipmunk through DHC Beaver, B-N Firecracker, B-N Islander, Beechcraft King Air 200, and many other run of the mill light aircraft such as C150, 172, 206, Grumman Cougar etc. then progressing in weight through the 4 engined Turboprop Vickers Viscount, Lockheed L382 ( Civvy C130) Boeing 727 etc. Also early in my flying career I was also privileged to fly British Army Air Corps Anti Tank choppers (ATGW) after learning how to ‘pole’ rotary aircraft on the wonderful Bell 47! Later I was flying 20 seat Super Puma choppers to the North Sea oil rigs after military service! I mention all these types, and there were many others, not to brag but to show how varied my flying experience has been and to maybe get things into context when I say that out of all that lot the little Ercoupe was/is “a very interesting” and loveable machine to fly and having so many early safety innovations incorporated by Fred Weick the designer. I’m sure some of your pilots in your Ercoupe videos probably have a wealth of experience in their own particular fields of aviation too but as I watched their facial expressions I related fully to their concerns when the nose wanders, or often just before a crosswind touchdown combatting a very demanding urge, i.e. trying to push their feet through the floorboards! Ha ha been there many times! One or two anecdotes now about the illustrious Ercoupe……. 1.Referring to the ‘drive it like a car’ comments my particular 415E, Canadian registered in 1948 was ‘driven’ when new, through the streets of Downtown Calgary, minus wings, to the Calgary Stampede Ground. I have a picture of the first owner who was the Western Canada Ercoupe dealer of the time at the controls gunning the engine down the street with its prop whirling! He was selling flight experience tickets at the show apparently. 2. There are all sorts of ‘strange but true’ stories about the Ercoupe available on the internet of course but for me one claim to fame I like was when the USAAF purchased 2 or 3 Ercoupes for…… wait for it…… JATO trials!!! Yes the Ercoupe was THE first aircraft to be fitted with Jet Assisted Take Off rockets during WWII. There is an online photo of an Army Captain piloting the Ercoupe at around 100 feet trailing two plumes of smoke while the tail dragger that started off the line at the same time for comparison has just got its tail off the ground…. Look it up, (search google with keywords JATO ERCOUPE PILOT WW2) the pilot Capt. Homer Boushey had to have had some huge cahones! This was experimental development of course aimed at getting heavy bombers off short runways. The photo caption says: “The Jet-Age is Launched as the first take-off is made of the Ercoupe aircraft with jet thrust acceleration at March Field, (Riverside, CA) on August 12, 1941. Capt. Homer Boushey, US Air Corps pilot was at the controls. This flight proved the value of jet-assisted takeoff (JATO) as an auxiliary to piston-engine propulsion and, moreover, the value of slow-burning solid rock propellants.” 3. There are other stories showing how easy the Ercoupe is to fly, one was of two kids playing around who got themselves airborne and landed two states away when they ran out of gas, another was when the old man was swinging his prop and the missus was told to sit tight in the cockpit and “don’t let the engine die when it fires”. Not only did she do that but she fired it right up and it took off “on its own” as the old man dived out of the way! She had flown with him before but had never handled the machine. Her first attempt to land was a big bounce affair but she got away with it and then she succeeded at her second attempt by wheelbarrowing on the nose wheel until it collapsed. Some scary moments alright but not the fault of the Ercoupe! OK I have banged on a bit but I can heartily recommend the humble Ercoupe to anyone in any doubt. Now in my late 70’s I am still flying ‘interesting’ machines, after just selling my Comanche 250 I enjoy my French built Morane Saulnier Rallye, another aircraft with fabulous all round vision and it comes complete with automatically deployed leading edge slats and Fowler flaps, very similar in this respect to the Boeing 727 whereas the 727 slats are manually deployed! Keep the vids coming! DW
Just watched the videos now for the first time. My father (now deceased) approached me 45 years ago asking that if he bought an ERcoupe and paid for me to get my private pilots license, could we go flying together. Gee dad. Let me think about it (for a micro second). He was close to 50 at that point in his life and unfortunaley, he could no longer hold an MOT (Ministry of Transport) flight medical. He had flown J3s for his flight training in his youth in the mid to late 40s. The aircraft he wanted to buy had been owned by a freind of his who had recently succumbed to Cancer. He bought the plane. I did my training, soloed in 35hrs, did my check ride at 65hrs and had my tie cut that day. My dad and I enjoyed many hours of flying the circuit and short cross countreis at/from and to our local airport (YBW). The Ercoupe is the ultimate example of "flying all day under the shade of the same tree". It is very tame but as has been pointed out, the cross wind landing of this aircraft is more than different. YBW has north/south and east/west runways but seldom do the winds follow the compass and at an altitude of 3940', Density Altitude is always a factor. Because of the winds, cross wind landing are the norm. Absent of any isolated rudder control you do crab the aircraft right down to the pavement. That's where the real fun begins however. As soon as the mains hit the aircraft will rapidly (some think violently) stop the crab and at that piont, the nose has to be down because your control is now "ONLY" by way of the steerable nose wheel. So you have to be ready to "LET" the plane GRAB the yoke and correct itself from the crab wing level position to the having to steer it straight down the runway mode. This takes a lot of getting used to and does scare the Hotel Echo Lima Lima out of a bucket load of folks. Besides that, I flew C-FIIT for many years and hundreds of hours. I got to spend many of those with my dad and gained great reward from watching him continuing enjoy his life long passion even if only from the right seat. The ERcoupe is very unique and in my mind, a great plane for someone who just wants to go flying. It is ultra-simplistic. You won't go anywhere quickly but in this plane, the journey is the reward. Hope this helps. Cheers!
God the plane is beatiful. Jenny is too! Great series guys
So you're never going to slip hard against a strong crosswind, or to make an emergency landing on a short space.
Too theatrical, plane is historically easy to fly per many pilots.
Had a rudderless Ercoupe. No problems. Love it. Would buy another rudderless ercoupe.
my alon had rudder pedals! not overly effective but a great airplane to fly! Crosswind landings no problem, just land sideways and it straightens out by itself. The gear is so strong it doesn't matter. The real beauty is the sliding cockpit , just throw the beer bottles out no problem!
Snowmobiler here. My main ride is big bore and very fast. Sets the skis back on the snow at 55 m.p.h. This coupe is like me riding my grandson,s Bravo 250 Yamaha. So light..so quirky.. you love it. Makes me giggle every time i flick that little snow machine around in a ditch!. Looks like a blast.! Hyabusa riders can still enjoy a moped!
That is one really nice super clean Ercoupe!! Wow!
My uncle told me about two guys who we’re trying to get the Air Coupe to spin. They finally did, but couldn’t get it out.!? But it is a Great airplane!
some people have modified these to have rudder pedals =)
Flew one 40+ years ago. It was a KICK! Weird but cool at the same time.
st george utah!!!
Love flying the Coupe in between other aircraft. Something to be said for just flying at the end of the runway in a cross wind and keeping it simple. I prefer to land on grass in a crosswind, less stress on the tyres and aircraft. Plenty of Coupe videos on my Channel. ;) ;) Only 7 in Australia, 6 are flying.
Scared? Whats the big deal about having no rudder pedels? I had a couple of cessna's, and flew several other planes including an Ercoupe, and it was the easiest one to fly, and fun. Scared, LOL.
Beautiful airplane!
This was definitely great to hear and helpful
Just like driveing a standerd to automatic car! I was going for the clutch! My dad wanted me to buy a coupe in Vernon b.c. ! Didnt happen ! Happy driving / flying😮
Please change the 90's style lettering on the nose are.
FYI, the nickname "Scare" Coupe does not refer to rudderless pedals. It was the fabric covered wings model of the Aircoupe. It utilized "PK Screws" to attach the fabric to the ribs. When airborne the low pressure on top of the wings created a look the resembled a upholstered couch as you could see every button of those screws. That was the part that was scary. Most of them now are traditional recovered or metalized wings.
Wow! Serious historical treasure! I believe because of my age 64, that these planes are so few that they must be made perfectly airworthy and then unfortunately, stored in museums. They are so incredibly valuable as a historical artifact that we can no longer afford to let private ownership and use take them or lose them to "accidents" from the citizens of the future.
Two full grown men, full tanks, warm day. Good luck climbing. Scarey plane.
Having flown a 46 415C Ercoupe several times, you are letting the airplane fly you. Just enjoy the ride and don’t fight the fun. It’s not a T-6 😂
Just getting my fixed wing license and have an option to pick a 1946 up. Would yall recommend it for my first plane?
Decades ago I knew two brothers who had a 1966 Alon 'Coupe. IIRC, it had rudder pedals added to it. They took me for a couple of rides in it. IT WAS REALLY FUN!
Jesus going to let me flying to him when he comes. And that can't take you to Jesus only Hell bell 🔔
As an experienced coupe pilot ....i lost count as to the number of mistakes made in the attempted coupe landings.....i suggest that you stick to aircraft with rudder peddles...
If you keep trying to fly the Ercoupe like it's a Cessna you're not going to like it. Land in the crab.
You are over thinking it. let it weather vane and land it that way it will land perfectly!
I've got about 3 hours in one after a 10 minute check out. They're a hoot. Just fly it down the runway and land it in a crab just like most of the Boeing and Airbus pilots do now.
坂本九
It’s got the V tail bonanza wiggle wag.
It was a beautiful airplane but also a beast.
This is an amazing some people just don't love beauty
my grandfather was a b-17 pilot in ww2 bad ass bomber
so he was a war criminal?
oh he is a war criminal. I like this guy keeps removing my comments. can't handle the truth
Wow you feel the same way as i do! Love anything that flies!!!!!
Needs power stearing? And a alarm! Hahaha lol!
Helped push this plane into the hangar at Pope AFB NC in the early 90s. It’s a great looking plane inside and out.
I've flown it before with no trouble. Loved flying it. Loved having the top down. And my arm out the window.
I was there when there were working on the plane the oil had a strong smell
