What brand of hotdogs are you using? I find the hotdogs in the US have different flavor, maybe more cloves than in Finland.
@cookiegirl2cookie197 I got some local store brand, Wegmans. I think if you find ones that have pork as a main ingredient and in natural casing, you're gonna be pretty close.
Looks yummy to me! I'm making the very same thing right now. Well the south Texas version lol. Our family's potato salad has chopped egg, celery, sweet onion, diced dill pickle, mayo and mustard, salt and pepper to taste. Tastes even better chilled for a bit. I'm throwing a whole chicken, sausages on the smoker and have an ice cold frosty beer to help with hydration. 😁 Happy New Year!
@historygal7 Sounds really awesome! Happy new year!
Yummy!
@sisuguillam5109 Thank you!
Mistähän tuokin perinne on lähtöisin? Täällä Ruotsissa syödään yleensä hummeria tms. alkupalaksi ja häränfileetä perunagratiinin kanssa pääruoaksi.

Sorry, but where are the amounts of how much of each
Hey I added amounts in the description. There's quite a bit of leeway with the ingredients how much you want to use each.
How did you make your starter?
@NinaHollingsworth-m2s I didn't make it myself. There's a thing called Carl Griffith's Sourdough starter - all you have to do is send a self-stamped return envelope to them and you'll get the starter. carlsfriends.net

The most embarrassing mistake in the Finnish language: mispronounce "júhannussíma" as "júhannússima" :D
Are you perhaps a fan of Fingerpori?
Itse tekisin ehkä mieluummin kanapeita noista, tiekkö sillipala per sipsi ja sitte kermaavaahtomätiä, joko siihen palan päälle tai alle, ja ehkä vielä joku vehreempi tillin rimpsu koristeeksi.
Hyvä idea, kiitos!
I've been struggling to find pickled herring (just can't get myself to like the German style after getting used with Ahti/Abba/Boy), but this makes me want to build a brännvinsbord 😃 The salmon caviar is fantastic. Great video, thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you! That reminded me: I wanted to try making vorschmack, but kept forgetting. I know that at least some varieties of it are considered traditional Finnish dishes. Would it be uncommon to have it on a Christmas/New Year's table?
Usually most new year eve'sh dish is considered boiled frankfurters with potato salad and rosolli with pickled herrings but I wouldn't mind vorschmack as a main dish. Vorschmack became famous in Finland mostly by being the absolute favorite dish of The President and Marshall of Finland Mannerheim.
Oh interesting! I wouldn't say it's common, but it is associated with very fancy dining for sure. I once ordered some from Finland, my first time eating it, and it was delicious.
I see pickled herring in stores in the US, but it's usually more the German style ( roll mops) Only place that I've found matjes herring was IKEA and closest one to me is over 400 miles away.
@cookiegirl2cookie197 So one of the most unexpected places where I found pickled herring was a Kosher supermarket. I live in an area that has a sizable Orthodox Jewish population. I think they originate from Poland, the Baltics and Ukraine, so it kinda makes sense that they would have similar foods.
@finnishyourplate Not here. Mainly Scandinavian and Finnish but in third and fourth generation so they still make pulla and pancake put there really isn't any imports coming.I was kind of thinking of going to west side of state in search of lute Fisk but needs to be seen... I just spotted some herring on Etsy so I ordered it. The price wasn't too bad (not great, but cheap enough so I can have some for my rosolli and rye bread)
@finnishyourplate I bet you could find some Scandinavian type anjovies/sprats for Janssonin kiusaus in those markets too.
@cookiegirl2cookie197 Yes absolutely! I've also seen sprats in stores that have Baltic groceries.
Love that I found your channel. I am a Newfoundlander that lived in Finland for a number of years and married a lovely man there. We now live in Newfoundland and I so miss so many things. We always do a split meal for Christmas. And hubby loves a piirakka baking marathon. Can't wait for your next episodes.
Excellent, I'm glad you're here. Stay warm!
@@finnishyourplate LOL 14 C here today! No such thing as climate warming. LOL. Can't wait for your next episode. BTW lived in Vaasa and Helsinki. Go Finland.
It's interesting that an almost identical variation of this dish exists in every northern and central European country. In the former Soviet countries, this version is known as 'vinegret' (although apples are very rarely added, and it's dressed simply with oil), and there is also "сельдь под шубой" (literally "herring under a fur coat") which is herring with vinegret and mayonnaise (most often made as a layered salad).
Yeah there's definitely a lot of similarities, even here in the US I can find similar dishes in surprising places, like the Kosher supermarket for example.
Even here in Finland there are several different versions of this. Mine is just beets, carrots, some finely chopped onion (raw) and maybe some gherkin. Some people add potatoes, apple, even herring.
Kiitos! Growing courage to make Rosolli and homemade joululaatikot through your videos! Iloista joulua
Iloista joulua! Start easy, like the potato casserole for example, and work up from there!
Not sure the exact brand, and I'm going back many years (2001-2) but there were rolls named perunasampyla (sic) meaning potato roll, but the crumb and density was perfect for bulking homemade meatballs and sausages
I have a friend who lives in Finland and told me about the rice porridge, I looked for the recipe and found your channel, and now I´m stuck in a loop of finnish recipes hahaha. Nice channel :)
Excellent, thanks for joining, hope you find something you like!
My grandmother was Finnish she always had molasses in the house.
In Finland or in the US? For what it's worth, molasses in Finland is mostly made from sugar beets. I have not compared the two to see if there's a big taste difference.
Wow, I've never had potatoes like this. It is very similar to sweet potato casserole I assume. I'm not a sweet potato fan but I'm intrigued with this potato recipe. I would love to try it!
You know, oddly enough I don't really like sweet potatoes either! But I do like this casserole.
@@finnishyourplate I like the change up from our classic mashed potatoes at our holiday table.
The Finnish cuisine suits me so well. I like some sweetness in main dishes.
@daniil_berezhnov Daniil! What's stopping you, go right now and make yourself some!
New to the channel, I thought the pun on the channel name was really cool x) I'm not into fruit jam but I really love the ones with nuts like chestnut, and we have a pumpkin one with nuts in it. I'll have to give this a try with one of those!
Thanks for joining! Oh chestnut filling sounds good! I would do hazelnuts as well in a heartbeat.
@@finnishyourplate I just got as well doce de gila/chila. Not sure what it's called in English. It's used in some traditional Portuguese sweets and I love it a lot x)
All looks great to me! I wouldn't pass up on either of the two! I would love to try that cheesecake with gingerbread crust. I've never been a fan of graham cracker crusts on cheesecake but I love gingerbread.
Thank you!
You've still done great! Your videos always inspire me, maybe one day I'll try baking if I have an oven in my apartment.

I am making it now with a mixer. I am afraid to “mix” it too much before adding the dough hook. I think my dough was too sticky. Maybe I did not knead it enough with hook. How long did it take to mix in butter and knead?
The strong mixing before adding the rest of the flour and the butter helps to create the strong airy texture that's needed because there's so much butter in the dough. But I would say a minute or two is plenty at this point, there's not a whole lot of flour yet. Once you have the dough hook in, add almost all of the flour (maybe like 90%) and then add the butter. Leaving a little flour at the end also helps you in case your dough is too dry so you can omit it. If it's too wet, just add flour, just a little bit at a time. When all the ingredients are in, keep mixing until it comes free of the bowl.
That reminds me: how popular is lard, salo or other pork fat products in Finland?
Not very popular. You can get pork belly, or bacon of course, but lard alone is not really used.
@@finnishyourplate Suolaamattomana linnuille ja patojen/pannujen rasvapolttoon.
@@markonikula2611 Joo, totta.

Lanttulaatikko is a favourite I make a few times a year according to the Beatrice Ojakangas recipe. Darned hard to cut through, though! That's when I discover I really need better knives. Individual servings freeze really well.
I'll have to check out that recipe!
Lanttulaatikko and bataattilaatikko are my favorites. Thanks for dropping the video! Hyvää joulua.
Bataattilaatikko is a great idea, I should do that sometime! Hyvää joulua!
At christmas time here in Finland different readily made root vegetable purees are sold at the supermarkets so you can make common casseroles easily; all you need is to add some molasses.
Yeah they are very quick to make that way, and a good alternative. Besides molasses, I would also add a hint of Christmas spices - cinnamon, ginger etc.
Apart from salmon soup, I've only tried rutabaga as a side (simply cubed and boiled) and compared it to potatoes. I thought the additional sweetness didn't go that well with the main dish (which is a bit strange for me because I usually like some sweetness in dishes), but I can totally see how one can like it if they grow up with it.
Maybe it's also the cabbage-like flavor that rutabaga has? I can see why it would be a little off putting.
The thumbnail is kinda noicy, hard to see the pic and top text.
Yeah you're probably right. Sorry about that.
