A prrof coin is struck using a set of dies specifically prepared to be as perfect as possible. In modern coining processes, the dies are a mirrored and frosted finish. In predecimal Australian coins, proofs are not mirrored and frosted. They're specially prepared dies which were then sent for striking circulation issue coins once the usefulness of the proof dies ended.
