What is the best material for FPV drone ducts? | Material Testing [Part 1]
Man, this was one hectic video to film XD.
During my hachidorii V2 testing, I realized that 3D printed ducts were much more viable than I gave them credit for - It even came to a point that I genuinely was curious how far we can go with them and how well they'd perform as 75/65 ducts. I wanted to find out which material was the best. Naturally, I thought to myself that ducts should give some degree of protection to the motors and propellers for our whoops - so this video goes over some tests related to the material's stiffness and weight.
For our samples, we tested PLA, ABS, PETG, HP PA-12, PC, ASA, and the Mobula 7 V2 and V4 ducts in three criterias: Weight, Axial Bending [Squish], and Tangential Bending [Flippy-Floppy]. Yes, I gave those tests those names XD. These three tests will help up guess how these ducts will perform when load is applied to them - similar to how they'll react during crashes.
Random thought but I might redo the Squishiness test - this time using calipers. The values I got were all very close to each other given that I was only using a ruler. Well see in part two but this should suffice.
In part two, we will intentionally crash my hachidorii V2 build using the different samples to verify if the data we got from this first part is correct and to identify other important information like durability and type of damage we can expect from each material.
*DISCLAIMER*: Filaments come in many different variants and will have different characteristics depending on the additives blended in. These are just the results I got from the samples I have and your results may vary.
Thank you again to @PCBWay for helping me manufacture these ducts! I've tried their 3D printing, CNC, and metal printing - and I genuinely am excited to get to work with them. This video would've just been "PETG vs PLA" without them XD. If you guys need something made, perhaps for a personal project, I highly recommend them!

I've been flying primarily 65 and 75 whoops for more than a year now and I've made a few rules for myself that I knew I should follow when building whoops: lightweight is key and smaller is easier to fly. However, with the release of the new Air75 and Air65, I was curious and wanted to see what the other end of the "whoop spectrum" was like. I thought to myself "Is heavier and bigger that bad?"...

Got it down to 17.3g's and going to put it up against DaoDesign's Nuffin (your 1.5mm t700 cnc frame is lighter at 1.6g vs 2.1g's of the nuffin). Trying to build an ultimate dense tree track whoop (well toothpick technically cause no ducts). Also I printed your ducts in PETG-CF and 3.5mm instead of 5.5mm and comes in at 2.3g's. @@im_ricebowl I'm building up a few of his bigger frames and saw he had the smaller nuffin - which ended up leading me to your frame as well. The initial goal was for both to be open prop and I love the feel of them both without ducts. Then I liked the idea of quick swapping for the occasion and went through a bunch of duct iterations combining a c03 cam mount and middle top lipo mount into the duct structure which makes it much stiffer while not gaining weight. Once that's ironed out will share those files on thingiverse as a remix of yours or something.

Bingo! that is why I mentioned PLA was the unofficial winner cause in reality, it should really be a balance of weight, flex, and stiffness. The Meteor 75 is a biiit more flexible, while the Mobula7 v4 tends to bend during hard crashes and sometimes stays deformed, causing the 40mm props to scrub against the duct edges. @@im_ricebowl Would be really interested in your opinion on the Air75 as compared to the Meteor 75 Pro. One is 10g heavier while the other has much much bigger motors!

@@chesterlim15 Ikr! very different drones but I'm really hoping the air75 performs well or atleast finds it's own place in the whoop category. The 75 pro was super smooth for me and I think the air75 will be a middle ground. we'll see when I try it out!

@@chesterlim15 Ikr XD I started this year with a whoop and a 3in. Now, it's a whole flock of drones 🤣. Ideally, I only have 3 drones (whoop, outdoor open prop, and LR) and just have loads of spares for those 3 XD

the beta FPV batteries are really low quality, they are treated poorly and will never meet the suggested flight times, but the whoop is pretty solid. I am kind of interested in the pre-order of the 2024 version, I just don't have any use for a tiny drone. I'm lucky to have a local group and room to fly.

@@greedfox7842 imma agree with that XD tho their lava batteries have been getting praise so atleast we have options from the same brand! I like these small drones just cause it's so easy to travel with them and sneak in a few flights in some spots XD.

The mob 6 eco is a mess too. It literally eats the batteries. New tattu batteries are swelling up and get noticable damage. They dont hold the voltage as well as before. The eco vtx is sucking so much power, that flight times of a minute and a half are normal for cruising... And the worst part is, happymodel isnt responding...

@@im_ricebowl its a rolling dumpsterfire. Im now in contact with Gao from HDZ and this dude is so helpful with that issue. One email and HM is responding. They now told me to flash to beta 4.5 and try again. Im scared for my Tattus 😂. I already bloated 3 of my 5 (new!!) Tattu 300s. It sounds a lot like the fault lies in the SuperX HD at the moment.... HM and light boards apparently dont mix well. Think about the elrs diamond board. That thing was a dumpsterfire too acording to the forums.
