Converting a car to EV is not as complex as you might think - subscribe to see me working on various EV projects. Already completed an RX8 EV, and now upgrading that with a Gen 2 Leaf motor, inverter and battery pack.
Few upgrades on the chassis & bodywork, getting ready for the big review!!
Car drives so well, about time the body work got some love. So off to the bodyshop for some welding and TLC!

So looking at lots of upgrades, done some digging into the canbus logs and looks very simply like putting the Leaf motor into reverse makes it regen! Simples!

So after blowing a few things up and going on holiday, I now have the parts to replace the relays and pre charge to get back on the road!

So my pre charge resistor is dead, was this why my inverter died? or did the resistor die as a result of the inverter death? Not sure I could ever find out without putting the old inverter back in place...

Cooling system done, vacuum systems done, wiring done, motor spinning check! Even gave the engine bay a good wipe down! The upgrade is getting closer and closer.

So yes - I may have blown up the original 80kw inverter... but what a great excuse to double the power to 160kw!!! Part 1 - take the RX8 apart and prepare the new Inverter and Motor. So after over heating, she cooled down, I drove home - all good. After installing the cooling system - she no longer works! Anyone with any bright ideas - let me know!

No one believes I have made my RX8 / Leaf for £5k! But I have! Honest! I have done somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 miles now, and she has been absolutely faultless!

So here it is, my fully road legal Mazda RX8 with Nissan Leaf Drivetrain. I have used the full Nissan Leaf stack - Batteries, Charger, Inverter, Motor, BMS, Relays, Contacts, everything! Thank you for everyone who has helped or contributed over the years, time to build the next one!
I have managed to find 20% more power! Or I had not got 100% to begin with...

I keep improving the car, and it is a right laugh to drive. Managed to find a couple of bugs in my throttle code - one was causing slight hesitations at full throttle and the other was losing me 20% power.
First 100 Miles completed in the Nissan Leaf / Mazda RX8 full electric vehicle conversion.

So 100 miles done! lots of minor things to improve, no footage yet as the weather has been horrid. Drives so well I am well chuffed. Suspension is SUPER hard! Will need to work out what needs adjusting, few knocking noises to sort out...

Hello from 2024. It’s even easier now with can libraries available in ide. I just built a device with an mcp2515 and an uno. I’ve also written my code to look for only what I want and don’t let it repeat. As you mentioned CAN is noisy. So this helps big time

I did something more crazy, I put the Mazda steering box on the subaru, everything is fine, I just got stuck in the canbus part, I couldn't run your file with the arduino and mcp 2515 I used, I didn't get a reaction in other sources, can you help me, I just want to operate the steering box

Depends on the car but in theory yes
Could it be possible to remove the rear seats, and place the batteries there? Then you can remove the rear doors as well and replace them with custom panels that are much lighter. I think you could get a lot more range that way and then you'd get back your trunk space, obviously at the cost of making it a 2 seater

@@SouthWestEVUK oh awesome, thank you for the reply! I love the improvements you've made. Just curious bc I'm new to this whole EV conversion thing. How much range do you estimate you could get if the batteries were all fit in the back seat area? Would it be possible to disassemble and fold over a 100kwh Model S pack and fit it in that area safely? Wondering if the much smaller size of the RX8 would lead to 400mi+ range. Is there a software that can estimate this sort of stuff or where should I look to? Thanks again!

Hey Dave, what sort of documents did you have to submit to the DVLA for the engine change? I’m working on mine, and I am getting close to having to submit that. Thanks in advanced
The DVLA wont accept an engine change to electric. So stuffed on that point - I went deep into this rabbit hole, and have to pay normal tax on it. This was 18 months or so ago so may have changed.
I’m not too fussed about the tax, we are always stuffed when it comes to that, as you know, however, I just need to get things registered and road legal, do I just fall out the v5?
it's actually called a 'OBD' AND NOT o d b !! (on board diagnostics ) 🙂

Awesome! Finally I can hack my car 😂 so is that little arduino just an uno or something with a ftdi chip for serial comms? Like I could potentially just build one and hack up my old kcan adapter for it's connector?
Take a look at my notes in the video (text) there is a link to buy this Arduino - comes with all the standard outputs and a canbus shield all in one.
I have the same problem on a Nissan Leaf 2014 . Is there a chance of showing me where the charging relays for the Dc to Dc Charger are located…
The relays for the DC to DC are within the power distribution model - which is the lump on top of the inverter (so basically the top of the stack that has the motor on the bottom).

The only way I will go EV is if i can keep my Manual Transmission. Love the swap i want to do the same thing. Keeping my Rx7 rotary so i want to find a car to swap it. I'm thinking an AE86, lol
