I just bought a trumpet. I don’t know how to get a sound. I blow but it sounds like a deflating tire. Don’t know how to blow so I get a musical sound. Very upsetting. Can you help?

what is the fingerings

Hello David. Thank you for your videos! As a trumpet player, I've experienced the classic pitch issue when playing off stage, but never understood why it happens. That said, looking into the Doppler effect, all the information I find on it refers to pitch differences caused by movement of the sound source relative to the observer. Distance is not part of the equations I've found. Is there another Doppler effect for static objects?

Thanks, Professor! I've dealt with this issue for years. I find that giving myself a downbeat, as you suggest, just about eliminates it. When I'm practicing with a metronome, no issue. Interestingly, I've recently started using KTM for single-tonguing, which also seems to help. I had been using the tip of the tongue behind the top teeth.

I repeat my earlier comment, the tone of this horn is absolutely wonderful. I myself don't think fast enough to change keys, but I admire those who can.

I'm stunned with the tone, that is truly exceptional. The bell is a touch larger, and a somewhat different shape, but there's no mistaking that fabulous sound. I'm really stunned.

I think that we are looking at a D trumpet with 5 descending valves. Or am I wrong? Any one for Eb trumpet with 6 valves? You might need more fingers but could be useful! Or go for the Vienna Phil solution. 3 valves but with mutiple safety keys. Weidinger would be so excited to see his invention still being used.

I have been having this problem and it was terrifying. Worried I got brain damage. I thought similarly that was taking too much air. I was always taught that the more air the better, but this is clearly an oversimplification.

The wildest thing about this videos is that university faculty are expected to wear a suit in the sweltering Arizona climate.

I d learned to wrap my top finger over the bell Supposedly it may dampen the bell resonance but it’s comfortable as well. I will have to try the new way I learned in this video

David. How does one purchase your book on Lip Bends ?

I am very grateful to Mr. Hickman for making this video. I naturally tip tongue. However, about a year ago, I was persuaded to switch to dorsal tonguing. What a struggle, and it proved to be unproductive even after many hours of conscientious practice. So today I returned to tip tonguing. What a relief. And then I watched this video. I only wish I had seen it before making the switch. I never would have done it, and I would have saved myself from fighting against what comes naturally. Mr. Hickman's explanation, which is based on anatomical differences between us, makes perfect sense. I am now a subscriber and will follow his sage advice.

Let me tell you: I am not a great player as you, but I know, that "high a" must be above high c, otherwise is is not "high a", but "a above the stuff" ( Mahler Symphony). Similarly, "double a" would be "a" above double high C (impossible to reach for 99.998% of the people)

Wow, this is all news to me. I potentially developed this problem as a trombonist trying to play trumpet, and noticed when playing large bore trombone and tuba this was not a problem. I will definitely be doing k tonguing exercises. Thanks for this video.

I looked this up on TH-cam today after coming back from a gig where this happened. I haven’t done much playing in months so figure it might be lack of practice. However, it’s something I’ve dealt with from time to time over the past decade. Particularly when lip fatigue begins, air begins leaking into my sinuses, then it’s hard to even sustain a 2nd line G. After a few seconds off the horn, I reset and may get a few more notes out before air begins leaking again. From there it’s a downward spiral and means putting away the horn for the next few hours or till next day. I didn’t realize it’s a problem others struggle with.

Is it necessary to use any other book in conjunction with this book? Many people suggest the H L Clark Book and others. Should a beginning or Come back player worry about any other material until going through this book?

This problem really ruined my trumpet playing career. I played thru college but it became very painful and disheartening, to the point that I stopped playing. I’m glad to finally have found information about this. Thank you.

Generally speaking the High G Sharp in Pictures at an Exhibition is played with the same fingering as your Middle G Sharp with the 2nd and 3rd Valves but oftentimes that High G Sharp can sound out of Tune depending on the Trumpet. Rotary Valve Trumpets often have Keys to make those notes play more in tune.

this is an interesting aspect. In general acoustics is always an issue and challenge to consider, especially in large halls.

I had this problem and it is scary. Looking back, I think I must have been over inflating my lungs when I practiced Clarke and was trying for the "8 to 16 repetitions". Thank you Professor Hickman for this advice.

I remember attending a clinic given by David Hickman in 1978 when I was just starting out on trumpet. I still remember his emphatic teaching on forming a correct embouchure.

Thanks a lot for this informative video. I’m guessing for 1st and 2nd year players, the recommendation is to just keep practicing and try to strengthen the palette? I pinched my boys nose shut and his problems went away, but the pressure was now hurting his ears which proved the air was getting in his sinus canal. Weird problem.

Some people like to use fingerings (or slide positions) a half step lower than normal. This is OK on the "false" tones, but regular fingerings are best on the fundamental tones (real pedals) because they are actual notes on the horn. But, it may not matter all that much as long as you are puckering correctly.

Re 8.10 Show us the study where air speed was actually measured and correlated to pitch. Where, that is, at what point in the system , was the air "speed" measured? Through the aperture?
