Austrian A-Class catamaran championship - complete drone shots
This is the complete drone footage captured throughout the Austrian A-Cat Nats at lake Attersee. The regatta was sailing open and classics together.
It was just barely enough wind in two races out of five to get the A-Cat foiling. Overall regatta winners were Wolfgang Klampfer (AUT), Scott Anderson (AUS), and Andreas Pfurtschaller (AUT).

Capsize during Sailspeedmaster record attempt - 50kmh gusts - A-Class foiling catamaran
มุมมอง 39Kปีที่แล้ว
Upwind foiling at about 20 knots (40kmh) boat speed is an adrenaline kick, as apparent winds climb beyond 35 knots (70kmh). Usually the boat remains well manageble However, when 25 knot (50kmh) gusts hammer on the sail and get under the tramp lifting the entire boat, this can get quickly out of control. As I broke my tiller, I could not complete my speed-race. Need to try another time. Also I n...

Race 3 on Day 2 of 6 races had enough wind for foiling and was my and Mikes best race. Austrian Championship 2023 was won by Mike Mödlhammer on a foiling camaran, and overall Regatta was won by Scott Anderson on classic A-Cat who did prove to be even faster than foilers in these conditions. Awesome day with steady 10 knots of winds. Great to experiment more with foiling upwinds, especially being faster getting up onto the foils. As viewers requested to see more of the maneuvers, I focused more on them and how to pop the boat and land it. At these moderate winds it is as easy as it can get. The world looks different at 18 knots TWS where the number one challenge is landing the boat...
A-Class Catamaran - Jibes and light wind foiling up to 20kn - capsize and righting

Due to viewers request to show maneuvers, I focused this time on jibes. There is lots of room for improving my jibes, but I still hope it is helpful to show them and how to get the A-Cat flying in light winds of 7ish knots, what is the bare minimum. There is a great capture of a classic jibing mistake leading to a capsize with instructions on what went wrong and what to do better. With the new ...

This is the first attempt this season for a good time across the lake to race the sprintmaster track with the foiling A-Class catamaran. A Class is so bad, its just pay to win. if you want a faster boat you just buy a faster sail. mid boat
Ok, now you know that they ventilate,..... what do you do about it?
@@SamuelLanghorn great question. a few options: mischa heemskerk recommended to me sanding foils with coarser grit (eg 600 or 800) the colder the water. that helped, but not entirely. smoother sheeting and better body weight management can help aa well. finally when switching to exploder and their foils i saw biggest improvement. so i am concluding that foil shape has a huge role in this. even in these smaller boats vs americas cup multiyear foil tuning
@@flyinggorilla ...Switching to "exploder" what is exploder? a specific foil type? sanding: in one of my first books in competitive sailing I took note of the comment to give the hull and foil a little texture so that a thin water film can build up.... I did not know that there is a relationship between coarseness and temperature?
@@SamuelLanghorn 1) exploder is polish boat maker who also creates foils. their A-Cat foils ventilate less likely than the ones in the video, as theirs have a slightly different shape 2) salt water is heavier and less likely to ventilate than fresh-water 3) while cold water has also higher density, the issue is increased viscosity that can cause sooner ventilation. hence the coarser grit should help the flow stay attached.
@@flyinggorilla ok, verstehe.
wow, how is this so stable, we need a lake neusiedel setup version
Unless it's changed recently, the hook on your trap harness is what damages the boat the most when trying ti right the boat. Please let me know if this has changed
@@Kognito72 you still need to be careful. best to always stay a bit sideways (eg hips) and dont lean directly with the belly and thus hook on the boat. i had punctured my hull once with the hook. learned since then.
Blimey 🤩
Geile Aufnahme, super.
Beautiful shots; may I suggest more takings like the one on min 8:10 with the still drone and the cat zipping trough, so that the speed of the action can be appreciated in full?
Fantastic!
Nicely done!

What an awesome vid!! I soo miss sailing catamarans!! I’m to old n beat up to do it anymore!! Thank you for letting me ride along…awesome memories!! (Nacra 5.2, 6.0, and Supercat 19)…how the technology has changed! 😊
@flyinggorilla any chance you can share spec / pictures of your cradle and slipway set up?
sorry, could you be more specific what your ask is?
@@flyinggorilla could you share a quick video on that little cradle and slipway you have for your catamaran that you launch it from the shore into the water please
I love the way this boat sounds cutting through the water. Excellent camera angles as well.
That's rude. Just wish they'd been around when I was (a lot) younger.
I love that trailing camera. Thanks for putting up a great video!
May i ask what year platform you use and which type of daggerboards? Is there a big difference in the different years?
exploder 2022. yes there is a big difference. the new exploder daggerboards are more stable and forgiving than any i had before.
Excellent 👌
Can I ask what software you are using to extract gps data from your camera? I presume you’re using a GoPro? I’ve just upgraded to hero 11 but it only shows kph or mph.
the spanish company Telemetry overlay has the best software for that. it is affordable and has powerful sync options. simple video overlays are easy. for multi-cam videos i figured exporting the speed overlay with green-screen works best (and use the overlay in the video editor as an additional track). and gopro 11 should work fine, telemetry overlay extracts gps data directly from videos.
It's foiling alright but the speed seems low, definitely not more than a fast cat would get in the same conditions with straight boards?
indeed the upwind performance is worse than a straight board cat as the water resistance of the large foils is so much higher. downwind performance is roughly similar, i go downwind 17kn with a straight board F16. however, to learn foiling this boat was really helpful and fun.
when I was young, A class was YUUGE and the trailer would tilt the hulls so it could be towed
Needs some basic lessons, specifically how/when to let the sheet out.
After the dump/capsize, your entry/exit from the starboard hull into the water looked a bit reluctant/lackluster. I might have tipped forward and pushed off with my knees, and directed my body into a forward flip, entering the water aft of the boom a small bit, and saved walking on the mainsail. Your harness/ diaper/butt-bucket should have allowed enough slack. Up until you were overpowered, you looked a dashing figure. Almost super-hero like. Regarding potential errors of judgement, a high speed pitchpole is a disaster. Keep fooling around and find out. It will make your little capsize seem like a walk in the park. The catamaran looks stunning. Not sure how shallow waters could accommodate those appendages.
Brilliant perspective! How did you attach it to the boat? Is it tied to the mast tip?
Super video. Brilliant idea with a cam flying on a kite/parachute.
So close to saving it! Great shots, you certainly have a great deal of experience and ability, plus a good dose of bravery!
@dunk856 When I first read your comment, I thought it ended with "plus a good dose of brewery!"
Really nice cat, what is it ?
Exploder a-cat
Whats the reasoning for not getting them higher out of the water like other foiling boats?
This boat is super lightweight and only 18ft long and has less than 90kg. So it is a boat that is suited for relatively flat water anyway. You could still use longer foils, but then the drag becomes higher in non-foiling displacement mode. In that mode a foiling A-Cat is already slower than the non-foiling peers, just because of the drag from the longer rudders. The final argument is class regulation that dont allow any longer ones or drastically different shapes like t-foils. hth
that was heart breaking to see that Moth accelerate pass you.
Love the videos you make, probably the best A-class videos I seen on TH-cam. I just picked up a DNA but have no ideas about controls. Is there any info you can point me to about anything on DNA f1 boats? Also where can I get your 3d printed flying cam mount for GoPro?
Competed for 25 years in Hobie 16,17, & 18's years ago. That's all pretty much gone now and I'm probably too old, but sure envy these guys on those great boats. Always admired the A class cats and almost got one about 15 years ago. Great video, especially while racing!
доигрался хер на скрипке... Интересно, с полного оверкиля он сам смог бы его поставить?
Using your mainsheet hand to hold on = capsize. Ask me how I know that.
ok, i ask you!
@@flyinggorilla then you can't uncleat the main in time - or at for some reason it did not go out and, of course this has never ever happened to me...
@@SpaceCrete all good questions. there is no cleat, so it was me hanging on. mischa heemskerk watched the video and suggested more rudder rake, so that the foils dont lose grip that easily, and the wind gust doesnt blow under the tramp lifting it. what we observe is that i tried to tighten the main really hard and simultaneously turn into the wind. however i lost grip on the foils so that maneuver failed. the gust came like a hammer from 10 to 25 knots in a secod. so probably yes, a different reaction, or even better an earlier reaction would be needed.
@@flyinggorilla That is my problem - not reacting fast enough. Going upwind it is amazing how much a cat main depowers with minimal release. Reaching, not any sure options, depending on the boat. Head up and flip. Head down and pitchpole. But the rudders don't seem to work very well just in air.
Mate I am 100% envious of boat and youth as I am too old and fat now. The start was good but on that knock next to last leg a tack would have been better I thought. Love the foils sailing has come a LLOONNGG way with new designs and materials. What is the weight of a fully rigged A class now?
foiling A-class fully rigged is about 90kg. classic A-Class boats are at minimum 75kg.
How is the visibility of the Vakaros Atlas in this mounting location?
surprisingly good. works well from trapeze. also it is in reach to start the race timer, or ping the line.
Carbon fibre is so amazing! The catamaran is so light that one normal-sized person can apply enough righting moment to get the capsized catamaran upright again.
It really is!
Where is this lake? So beautiful !
Thanks. It is lake Attersee in Austria, right in front of the alps.
I was expecting a pitch pole and some flying
fun video to watch, but too much chasing velocity in those light conditions. You'd be better to stay on the boat and sail deeper or higher. Its about VMG, not just V.
thanks for watching! indeed, in that light conditions it is very risky to chase for velocity. However, we raced A-Class classic (non-foiling) and A-Class foiling together, and as the classics have less water resistance and a sail shape that works better for non-foiling downwind, there is no chance to win against the classic boats but try to get onto the foils when there is a reasonable chance. I lost the bet with choosing foiling mode, but displacement mode wouldnt have brought me to the front either. The Austrian A-Class champion foiled better than me in these conditions and took a top place in that race. bottom line you are right, I learned in further light wind regattas this year that more patience and being more conservative by going downwind shortest distance, very very deep derisks and pays off more often than it harms due to a lost opportunity of speed. thanks!
Smooth recovery!
Yes! Thank you! Only caveat: i broke the tiller extension. you can hear the crack of the carbon tiller extension in the video. I do have replacements of those as it is better to break the tiller extension than the cross-bar or rudder stocks of the boat.
Those foot loops look sketchy. It might be an idea to set them up like straps on a windsurfing board, ie. just wide enough to allow your toes to fit through. Too loose and you’re likely to injure an ankle!
yes, I know what you mean. however, i figured the risk of injury is lower if staying attached to the boat vs. making a flight off around the boat while hanging in the trapeze. in fact i took a small injury away during this capsize, but not on the foot in the footstrap. it is the forward foot taking all my body mass and inertia that strained my foot tendons. so while i generally agree with your comment, I feel only safe on this boat when "locked in". thx for watching!
@@flyinggorilla Yeah it’s a tricky balance. Had a few similar incidents on the Musto and a board. I’ve always wondered if there isn’t a better solution for footstraps - something that lets go under too much tension etc.
Those froot loops looks sketchy as well, we don't eat those around here but I feel like I digress
Great video. Glad to see the A class is alive and well. I used to race US 1, designed and built by Dave and Jerry Hubbard. It had a hiking board rather than a trapeze but still a fun piece of kit.
When you are foiling, there seems the right rear rudder is too high and overpowers the tiller heading. is that something a sheet adjustment can fix, or is the wind too variable?
great observation! I probably had too much lift on both foils and rudders. Those angles are adjustable on the water.
I didnt know you could MANUALLY control your flight height, super cool
yes, thats cool. the shape of the main foils is also somewhat self controlling, because the higher the flight the lower their lift. to a limit.
flying... thanks for the video!!
Thanks for watching!
I reckon you would hit 30 if you stopped that deck sweeper from flapping!!!!!!
hah! indeed that drove me nuts too. in the meantime i got great advise from steve brewin to make two small modifications to stop the flapping. now i just need proper winds to prove it works :-)
I have the same problem with my deck sweeper, except I have a bungee to try stop it
Good racing. Nice job. The slow drag to the last mark must have been frustrating.
indeed. always hard to estimate how much to try to go onto the foils or go straight downwind. as foilers have more drag than classic a-cats flight time is essential. still lots to learn, its great fun
How heavy are YOU ?
same as boat class :-) which is 75kg
Loool, Attersee? Richtig cool! Was kost so ein Gerät?
~35kEUR Segelfertig und damit eigentlich in der ähnlichen Preisliga wie eine Motte.
That was pretty cool
