High-Risk DXpedition to Burkina Faso: James KB2FMH at XT2MD
James Gallo, KB2FMH, is no stranger to adventure, but his recent DXpedition to Burkina Faso might just take the cake. A retired New York City plumber with a flair for storytelling and a passion for ham radio, James recounts an expedition marked by danger, diplomacy, and a healthy dose of camaraderie. From navigating military barricades and armed escorts to having their equipment confiscated by local authorities, James and his team faced challenges most operators would only read about.
The United States government warned against travel to Burkina Faso-a country classified as a Level 4 red zone due to threats of terrorism and violence. But for James and his international team, the lure of activating XT2MD and making history outweighed the risks. What they didn’t expect? A visit from plainclothes special police and a three-day shutdown of their operations.
Enter the President’s uncle, clad in royal garb, whose unexpected intervention turned the tide. With his influence and connections, James and his team retrieved their confiscated gear and resumed their work, ultimately logging an impressive 76,000 QSOs.
This is a story of perseverance, shared humanity, and the power of amateur radio to bridge even the most unlikely divides. Join us as James brings his trademark humor and vivid storytelling to an unforgettable adventure.

    Having lived in the Middle East for 20!years, the first day I arrived I was educated in how the US state department would be of no assistance whatsoever, and I should try and reach the British consulate instead. On dxpeditions to AP ( 1 man ) rows of machine gun equipped military personnel was common at the airports. De K2XR Great video !

    Another habit that annoys me while running a pile up: the station I answer sends my callsign to me. I know my call and do not need it sent to me. The issue is that it costs the running station qsos eventually because it consumes time. For example if three stations do it in a row, I lose enough time that costs one more qso.

  • @kyleinokc
    @kyleinokc 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    To learn to break the pileup, be the guy running the pileup. Doing POTA/SOTA gives you good experience with smaller pileups. It really helps to be on the receiving end because you're learning how guys are breaking the pile. Now you can take that knowledge and try breaking pileups with that technique.

      Having been on the receiving end of the pileup, Randy gives so much solid advice especially with etiquette. Guys who try to bludgeon their way through my pileups.... I intentionally don't work them. It'd be easy to work them so they go away, but then I'm rewarding bad behavior and other people start doing the same thing.

    I'm not a contester but I like to work DX whether it be on CW or single sideband. And I have managed to break pileups with my meager 100 watt station with an indoor antenna. So yeah I think it comes down to timing if you're a little off frequency and things like that but I've broken pileups. I really got to say this again I just I really think it's about timing and things like that 73 good video

    increase speed when calling - this works for a select few people but I would say it doesn't for most everyone else. More often the problem is in the other direction - answering CQers at a speed much faster than the CQer is sending. Slow down, call once and get the QSO, instead of calling fast, getting ?, then sending again at same fast speed, then getting QRS, then finally slowing down to get your callsign understood and the QSO in the log.

  • @DeanWood-bd5pq
    @DeanWood-bd5pq 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    There are other reasons why a caller doesn't answer the CQer's exchange the first time: a) the callsign got covered up by another station calling on top of the CQer. The caller usually hears the exchange but doesn't know who it was for. b) Transmit locked out in multi-op and couldn't reply at exactly the right time.

  • @StuartM0TTQAmateurRadio
    @StuartM0TTQAmateurRadio 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    On the "short callsigns aren't always good" - I chose mine purely for being good phonetically, with no thought at all about CW. Then I started doing CW and thought "oh no, all those dahs, the weight of it" but in fact it makes it quite distinctive and it's not an issue.

    Yes, trying to get into the pileup. It's finding the appropriate time and patience. Lots of patience some of the operators may listen above the frequency and sim listing below. It varies it can do. Makes it harder when you when your qrp. It's a challenge though qrp is excellent I think. All the best, DX 73S G0HDA

    Great conversation, with several things that were new to me. I’m intrigued by the club leadership development idea. My club leadership seems to be good at finding what individuals have energy for, and putting them in a role to share that passion. It might be writing (digital promotion), social communication (welcoming new comers), technical (offer radio building help), organizational skills (organize events), etc. I’m all for recruiting new hams, especially younger hams, but let’s not forget how contagious good energy is. How can we bring out and highlight the energetic souls, whatever age, who are passionate about the hobby?

      My setups are all Single Operator One Radio, limited antennas. One QTH has an FT-710 MFJ 1984 EFHW and an 6BTV I use only for 80m. The other QTH has a home brew EFHW for 80-10m, I have just purchased an FTDX10 for this QTH but not used it yet in a contest. My goal was similar radios for possible SO2R in the future, but all SO1R ops to date. An FT-710 since December 2022. In VE3 I am in a suburban setting with some noise. Less noise in a more rural setting in VE1, but still have a few neighbours but way more space. In my opinion I have little technical advantage. I spend a lot of time in the chair, and in contests I am able to pick out signals others may miss. I frequently compete in Assisted categories and try to work the mults. I can quickly move through the available mults and QSOs window in N1MM. I need to better understand when openings occur and how to recognize them. I try not to sit in pileups too long but come back frequently. I try to listen to how the calling station picks his calls and tail end or if they are open front load my call. Biggest contest muscle is staying on as long as I can make to QSOs. Not a whole lot of magic unfortunately mostly repetition. I have started reviewing previous performances to see how I did and how it went to give me an idea for this year. Hth. De VE3RGO lots to learn yet.
