Would be nice if you could add an extension for when the tailgate is down so you could sleep/camp in the back or have a secured extended bed area. Or even a tent extension.
Have you seen our version with the integrated pop up roof?
@ yes but I’m looking for a lower profile model. I prefer not to have anything hanging over the cab.
NO 3” mattress is comfortable.
This one is incredibly comfortable, you should check it out in person.
Hello Cardiff!
🤝
Rivian sold 11,310 pickups in 2023. So designing a GFC specific to Rivian is a niche market that seem more of a PR/marketing stunt than user-driven marketing. Also, they don't seem well suited to GFC-style use of camping in the backcountry. By the time you get to the dirt road you might already be low on electrons. Maybe a guy could carry a few five-gallon Jerry cans of electrons to pour in when the wheels stop turning. Also, tires specific to electric vehicle would not be well suited to travel on dirt. More eco-Woke than practical.
Idiot.
Maybe you’ve missed all the other video’s of Rivian R1T’s off-roading and overlanding?
Eco Woke?
Wait til you see the build series 👀
I've taken an R1T plenty offroad, been winched off stuff, etc. There's plenty of national forest out there in range of fast chargers, which means plenty of fun to be had out there. It's no solid axle rock crawler, but it's very good at what it is: a giant awd torque monster. The best part is absolutely hauling ass around a forest road drifting and stuff, all without any sound aside from the tires on the dirt. Quiet offroading is a treat.
Love it. GFC - industry standart.
Thanks homies
Looks very nice. F150 Lightning owner here. Have you done any of those yet?
Thanks Matt! Yes we have done quite a few lightnings, shoot us an email or a call if you want to see more info!
Looks great. Picturing ski storage secure inside, angled up above bed height, vs adding more wind resistance w exterior ski racks… amirite?
The bed isn’t tall enough for skis to clear between the roof and mattress as the overall tent assembly is really thin. Bindings and rocker/tip height is quite significant over the length of the skis
@@GFC But in theory could you take the mattress out to increase size if you really needed to?
Yes, but you still have bindings to contend with. Could definitely make it work, but not sure the juice is worth the squeeze compared to roof mounting. Unless you were traveling very long distances with limited infrastructure
Love all the thoughtful design choices 🤘
Appreciate the kind words Glenn!
Looks very good. I am waiting GFC builds camper for Cybertruck
Would be an interesting design challenge 👀
@ Should be 😜 Not flat edge. Button on edge you already have experience on R1T
Gave you a sub from Upstate New York. Do you make one for 2022 Chevy 2500hd 6’9” bed ?
Thanks Ned! And yes, we do make them for your truck!
Super cool, but super $$$.
Appreciate the kind words and thanks for checking it out!
If you’re buying a Rivian, the camper is budget lint. 🤣🫵🏼
@@Chris-bg8mk Spending more than 10% of the Rivian price does not feel like budget lint. Definitely an awesome idea, but a bit much for my use case. The topper may serve me better though.
Can we purchase that fairing for other vehicles!?
The rivian being unibody makes fairing design pretty straightforward. We don’t currently have timing or a plan to launch a fairing for existing customers, but will definitely pass it along to the team!
Good work. The Rivian R1T is the right sized EV pickup truck. Several vendors are introducing toppers of one style or another for Rivian.
The form factor is killer, just like a first gen tundra
ORDERED. Install in Scappoose in FEB! Sooo Stoked.
Heck yeah! So stoked for you!
How does it do with dust? Rivian’s tailgate lets in a lot of dust but it can be fixed with a little bit of stick on foam, but if the camper lets in dust then it’s a waste.
How are you sealing your Rivian tailgate? I haven’t had any success. It always comes up through the gooseneck section for me.
The camper seals well from both dust and water 🤙 it’s got gaskets all the way around the panels
can you make the fairing available for other builds? my hybrid maverick would benefit from using it.
Will definitely pass along to the team!
Nice work keeping it low and having external access to the buttons. What are you plugging the lights into? How about the brake light?
Currently working the lights into a battery pack, but looks like there’s relatively easy access to the 12V power in the gear tunnel after digging into the beds bulkhead panel. Third brake light is wired directly into the factory CHMSL harness. Not too different than doing it for modern ram trucks 🤝
@@GFC Not to hijack the Rivian video thread, but the factory CHMSL harness is what you recommend for GFC CHMSL wiring on the Ram? I was going to tap into the trailer brake controller.
It all depends on the year and model. Have had a few that require getting under the headliner iirc
Do u have it for the cyber Truck yet
We do not currently
Lmao 70 bucks for two small 3D printed pieces of plastic is disgusting. Everything in this "hobby" is highway robbery
Make it for less and start selling them on Etsy! Nothing stopping you. Just make sure you spend the time testing and engineering reliable solutions with excellent install guides and customer service after the fact.
Will there ever be an "extended length" version of the GFC? Something that offers a little bit more cab-over length for people with 6.5 (or longer) foot beds? To me, the only pain-point is having to remove part of the mattress in order to access above or below the bed platform. The extra length would allow for a separate trap door or just a gap/space to allow the whole bed to remain intact while traveling from top to bottom inside the camper.
I want one, but worried about garage door clearance
What kind of truck do you have?
I just want to say, man my truck is good looking! Kidding -- what I want to say is I'm impressed by how high quality this topper is, even in this early prototype stage. No rattling whatsoever. Can't wait to get my greedy hands on version 2!
🙌🙌🙌
Very nice. What’s going on with the LEDs? Are those powered from the socket in the bed?
Thanks man! They are 12v and can be powered off rerouted gear tunnel power or a secondary power pack in the bed
In theory you could run them on the 120v in the bed, but it wouldn’t be the most efficient
Are there mounting points for a rooftop tent on top of this?
You could absolutely mount a roof top tent to this, have you seen our camper?
Would there ever be a 2-in-1 design to go from camper to topper and vice versa? Any chance you’ll come out with an option to have a bed struts that open up like Alu cab? I find that as the best design for moving the bed up. I get your current design but find it cumbersome.
Has the leaking and moisture issue resolved towards the pivot?
Great video and explanation! Do you have any considerations for some of us that have growing families and would like a wider bed up front, more overhang over the cab so it is easier to have somebody sleep and still have standing height inside the bed when the weather is bad. A non wedge style would be amazing as well so sitting up in bed over the cab would be amazing.
How many kids are you camping with and how old?
@@GFC 2 kids 5 and 7, we currently fit in a king size bed hardshell RTT but would be great to have room for us to all sleep up top together while they are still young and room for a pass through when they can have a bed in the bed afterwards. Campers like the Topo Badlander or Tune M1 might work but they don't seem to have the overall build quality of the GFC. I also don't know other than maybe material shipping constraints why most are not longer than 10 feet when there is so much room on a Full Size Truck over the cab. If cantilever is a problem, I am sure deploying some temp supports that are supported by the cab roof would also work.
I love the extra engineering and attention to detail. I've been using a softopper for a few years... originally thinking it was very important to me to be able to remove the topper whenever I want. But now nearly 3 years in I feel like I'd never take it off if it was just water/dust proof and carwash friendly. I'm strongly considering a GFC camper for my tacoma in 2025. I've also been very pleased with the Superlite RTT on my 4Runner.
So good to hear! Appreciate your feedback. Ease of ownership is super critical on a daily driver
Great videos! I'd love to sell these
Glad you like them!
Hi, super cool build. What are options for carrying a spare tire on that truck? Could you carry a 37 inch spare in normal spot? (Doubtful) Or bumper rack or what? That’s the only downside I see.
Hitch hauler (like a rigd supply) or in the bed. Lots of folks, ourselves and 74weld included, have been carrying gluetread patch kits rather than full size spares on trucks with big tires.
Space grade campers, love it brother🤙🤙
Appreciate ya Scott!
Any plans to expand the mounting design from the rivian to other trucks? The new ranger specifically has sites to have things bolted to the rails that would work great! (Not that I don’t like the clamps, they are beautiful, but ford is really pushing to use these sites in their builders manual)
We have a great solution for mounting to the 6g ranger platform that has worked well on the dozens of units installed, lots of off road abuse, especially the portal axle ranger raptor in our last build video.
Gfc led the way and I had a v2 but for the life of me I don’t get they let their competitors innovate and evolve more with options of side windows to solar and a roof fan. I get they probably don’t offer it to streamline production and maximize profit while keeping costs lower but they could have really monopolized the market by even offering just solar and a roof fan option
Our process of streamlining manufacturing helps us to take care of customers and make sure we keep building the best product on the market, both in value and quality. Taking care of customers is key, and that is often counter to profitability as we build our brand and community. Have you seen the updates in the new pro? Lots of neat things happening. All of that said, keep an eye out for accessories in 2025 👀🇺🇸
Super sick truck with portals. The L track solution from Freedomcoast is rad. How did you fasten the L track through the Bedrug carpet into the bed? I want to do this. Very nice work on this Ranger. Super rad.
Freedom coast has a few vehicle specific kits, requires drilling. Super clean solution.
@@GFC Did you use some sort of backing strip with nuts on the threaded bolts, or did you use what they call a cross nut which is sort of like a rivet and mushrooms below the bed sheet metal? Did you use any technique to seal the holes like a fluid film or a rubber strip or something I haven't thought of?
This isn’t our truck, I’d guess it is using the cross nuts and some corrosion inhibiting paint
@@GFC Ok cool. Thank you. Rad truck. Drill holes in Raptor. Makes you think a little before drilling when it's your own truck and it costs over six big bills. So sick. Keep up the rad work.
Yessir, it’s a committed solution! A decked system might be a good middle ground for no drill, but the L track is so lightweight and clean!
Was the issue with the sagging tent resolved? Per GFC forum, a lot of complaints regarding the V2 pro tent
Yep, there were only a couple of tents that were affected due to a tolerance stack issue. Because we make the tents in house in Montana we are able to address things like that immediately 👍
@@GFC Awesome! Glad to hear the issue was resolved 😊
Of course! Always happy to help, and we will be ready when you are!
GFC is the only overlanding camper company that puts engineering up front like this. For me, that inspires. It's ultimately the big reason I bought one (besides the treehouse feeling in the tent). It's a whole different ball game than the competitors rebranding and reselling stuff from China. There's a place for that, too, but it's not on my truck.
❤️🇺🇸
Dude. Sign me up
🇺🇸🤝
OEM+ gang for life. Sadly, can't justify portals on my daily driven Ranger, but I certainly want to match that bed setup! The L-Track and rug is so smart. Only question I'd have on this setup is how that rug holds up if you're transporting wood. Does it hold splinters and get annoying to pick out? I live in a cold climate so the rug would be nicer than rubber matting that's going to get stiff in the cold, but not if it's going to be a nightmare to clean out.
It’s an outdoor marine style fabric so it holds things like sprinters significantly less, but is going to be worse than a rubber mat or truck bed liner for stuff like that. I’d say give it a go!
Best quote from one of my professors who was a materials science/weld engineer: “After a lifetime of welding and studying its effects on material properties, the best advice I can give you is to avoid it at all costs” 😂 I like listening to you explain your design ethos because it matches mine. Someday I’ll have enough saved up to put one of these campers on my truck
Thanks Sam! Appreciate the kind words!
I really like the approach of GFC. Would you ever consider building a camper that is flush with the top of the cab with no overhang? Basically a camper in the size of the topper. Of course it needs at least a 6 or 6.5 ft bed to make sense. A lot of us mount an RTT on mid height bed racks to keep the height as low as possible.
I feel like have the extra height/room in the camper is worth the slight mpg hit! I doubt your Tundra will really notice that much of an MPG difference anyways. Very curious what GFC has to say though
@@joemahan311yeah it will definitely be a trade off with useable height, but good that I’m short lol. MPG isn’t really my main goal. Lowering the tent part (100+lbs?) by 6-7 inches would help a lot in handling and off camber stability. A lower roof heigh would also help clearing trees on the trail. These 2 were actually the main reasons I took the RTT off my FJ, even though it was a 6 inch thick light weight tent
Stoked to see you here man, really love your channel. It’s something that could absolutely be done, our 8’ bed camper does something similar. That said, like Joe commented, you might not see too much of a hit with that old school v8. Love the rcsb tundra 🤝🇺🇸
@@GFC Thanks! I want my RCSB to be a "rocklander" capable of very technical trails. So my goal is to keep the roof height and center of gravity as low as possible. Granted, the standard GFC is already pretty good. I like the look of the 8 ft camper, but it would be a lot cooler to have that on a short wheel base that can go anywhere :)
If you’re in Southern California we should link up and do some testing!
Traveling through Bozeman on my way to Yellowstone and it's GFC everywhere 😮
Heck yeah, team GFC out in the last wild parts of the lower 48 🤝
Time to offer a hard sided option instead of just the tent
Why’s that?
@@GFCBears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica
Most hunters in bear country camp in wall tents.
No. Don't go lower. I was thinking it was not tall enough. My current shell rakes taller toward the rear. Really helps with hauling mowers smow blowers, etc.
Would you want to see a high roof option?
Really really nice work folks! Love it
Thanks so much!
This looks really good. I actually reserved one and really appreciate this update. Originally, I didn’t see the extrusions on top of the camper and I was wondering it could be used to put an ikamper on top? Also, will that be an add on or will it come with the camper shell?
Thanks so much! Yes we make crossbars that would work great with mounting a roof top tent, or you can take a look at our camper that will offer a tent with a pass through (standing room in the bed) as well as better aerodynamics.
@@GFC hey thanks!! I did think about that option but we have 3 little ones so not sure how that will work unless there’s another version that’s bigger. Will there be a demo anywhere in Northern California in the Bay Area?
We will be doing a tour for sure but the timing is tbd. Hopefully in the next couple of months! Lots of customers that sleep kids down below, but the rivian bed is somewhat limiting for kids that are > 4.5’ tall.
@@GFC thank you for the info. Pricing still the same as posted on your site?
Yessir!
Yep... Looks like you're on track to design a very Rivian friendly pop-up truck camper. 🤞🤞
We’ve been shipping those for a couple of weeks now 👀
Jonny Lieberman’s😊 Spinach Omelet R1!

I don't get trucks. Nobody really tows. Few use the bed. Many put a camper on top...which basically is like: R1S????? It makes zero sense.
Where do you haul muddy gear in an r1s? What about big sharp awkward objects? How about big bags of mulch or loose dirt? What about hauling trash to the dump? Or loading up gear for an adventure where you need more space than an r1s offers? It’s like the majority of the r1s but with an added garage. If you don’t need it, and mostly haul people and clean things, definitely don’t buy a truck.
@@GFC 1. In the back with a liner. 2. Same. 3. same. 4. same. 5. Roofbox and hitch locations (same if you don't like the liner option). The Garage you speak of is INSIDE where folks can't steal shit, or OUTSIDE still in locked roofbox or on a hitch mount. Trucks make zero sense. SUV or a Van.
Weird take. I’d never take my trash to the dump in an SUV, and dirty gear on a tiny cargo liner leaned up against upholstered interior fabrics sound like a nightmare. F150 (truck) is the number one selling vehicle in North America 🇺🇸🤷♀️
@@GFC As a 4Runner, LR4 owner and Sprinter owner...it sure as hell isn't a weird take. It's real life bud. Most of us get it. Not the truck cosplayers I guess.
Good luck in the hunt! We make product for just about everything, SUV’s included. In fact, my other car is an 80 series land cruiser. Trucks serve a great purpose, and not everyone wants to drive around in a giant van that can’t off-road or have their vehicle optimized for carrying people rather than gear.
lol randomly the best off roading review of a rivian.
Thanks hombre!
