Compressor Cover 101 - Surge Ports
มุมมอง 22K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Robert discusses different surge port designs and how they function.
I think (correct me if I am wrong) this was addressed from a gas engine perspective due to surge when the throttle plate(s) close while the turbo is spooled. How is it different for a compression ignition engine that does not have a throttle?
Turbin wheel 😂

Hello, with which of the 2 wheels I have the best performance, both wheels have the same average TD04HL 45.65/52mm 5+5blades turbo wheel/ turbine shaft&wheel for MITSUBISHI TD04HL 45.65/52mm 9 blades turbo wheel/ turbine shaft&wheel for MITSUBISHI

BIG DEAL = any one can measure ! = it is performance we need ! not much info or help here !
I'm shocked after all this time no one has called this out. Air DOES NOT flow through the surge port toward the impeller. It flows from the impeller through the slot and circulates back to the inlet. Look at any CFD analysis on the subject.
The CFD engineer, scientist or user has to make the assumption(s) as to where the air will get into the turbo and set the boundary conditions. The assumption that the air is traveling through the impeller only may be correct or not correct. Therefore, testing is needed to confirm the path that the air will travel to the turbo. I "believe" that it goes through both, but the bulk of air goes through the impeller. However, the argument that more power is made on the slot than the hole type housing may not be significant. TESTING IS KING.
@@chimpun1979 This might be correct if it wasn't already a well studied and tested topic. I have 5 research papers in front of me based on CFD and gas test stand work. It's real clear what these ports do and there is a reason the technical reports all refer to them as recirculation or bypass ports, not surge ports. I'll call that that street name.
Idiot
Inconell is a brittle in the cold hammering but in the heat application its a flexible in the stress and tension
Does anyone know what alloy the turbine wheels are made of? I am assuming it’s some type of inconel.
Now please compare throttle response of each, it's what their actual purpose is. My chra is so savage I have to lift my foot off the gas pedal completely over speed bumps otherwise it gets into very uncomfortable driver induced oscillations.
doesn't even hit at the same place mate..
To be fair, test them at operating temperature.
Why not use pure titanium, or 6al4v alloy, or grade 1 or grade 2 titanium, which are extremely ductile. I'm not saying Inconel is not a good alloy, it is, but this test is not fair, since Titanium Aluminide can be as much as 45% Aluminum so its as much as Aluminum as it is Titanium, hence it suffers from extremely low ductility, and is not a good representation of Titanium or typical Titanium alloy, which actually are very tough and have excellent flexibility and ductility.
TiAl is intermetallic and thus not comparable to Ti or Al alloys. it is used for creep resistance at higher temperatures, which both Ti and Al alloys do not offer. Also, pure Al is way more ductile than Ti because it has more independant slip planes, but this doesnt matter here because the TiAl does not have an Al matrix...
Now show the difference in weight, or is this channel only for useless demonstrations?
Thank you for your time and great video
Turban wheel
What abot 713 vs 718
Would be interesting to see the same test but with the impellers heated up to operating temperature
Is it possible to buy from somewhere that KT67 turbine wheel?
Great video quick and easy. My favorite thing, it went straight to the point.🤙
I can't find these for sale anywhere and I need one now
These are impeller wheel , which is in front of the engine to take in air. The turbine does the opposite , it ecpells hot gasses
My question is: why do the gasses need to make a 90° turn in all turbos? Why isn’t a squirrel cage design used? Wouldn’t a 90° turn on the hot side conduct more heat?
These are the turbine wheels, the hot side. They have an inducer and exducer diameter just like the compressor wheel. Blade geometry and count is quite different for a compressor wheel.
Sir have you studied about marine turbochargers Man, Mitsubishi, ABB
Such a useful knowledge
check out this turbo charger . comments welcome www.dropbox.com/sh/hv2isddyf6yaw5w/AAAJjByXbBZew47kAxkfYTGha?dl=0
AntiSurge kills power.... Fact!! All the turbo Guru's know this but they do look cool.
Very good vid, any words on the t51 type antisurge cover design?
Preach the truth! Very informative, and refreshing to see correct the correct information put out here
the inconel turbine weighs roughly twice as much
Thank You Borg Warner for offering us such an advanced product such as the EFR. We know to keep the Anvils and Hammers where they belong ;) Thanks to Forced for sharing the knowledge.
Will the titanium aluminide break if it's so much as dropped on the floor accidently?
No but will get ding and youll be sent home for damaging a 1 piece order
But the Titanium one is lighter better spool up right?
Yes, I am currently installing it in my car for that very reason. The switch to Inconel was for added durability when running extreme rotational speeds and temperatures. If you're not boosting the hell out of your car then there's no reason to worry.
Could you explain the trim values and what they mean to me?
Gt 35 Came to life..........
As long as you don't have an arbor press anvil in your turbo inlet you should be ok with the TiAl wheel...
you never know when Terrorist attack your plane with an arbor press ;D
is there any way you could show the backs of each of these housings?
I would love to see a compressor wheel basics video
percision turbos are better than forced performance
But they don't last for shit
Can I order EVO X TD05HA Titanium Aluminide CHRA cartridge from FP? What are the operating boost pressure, temperature and RPM limits of TI-AL over Inconel 713C?
try it with a pure titanium turbine
I doubt anyone has ever bothered. Same reason F1 manifolds are made from inconel and not titanium.
Grade 5 titanium which is basically a titanium mixed with other metals are harder and more durable than pure titanium. Titanium is really overated tbh.
how has it taken me this long to find your videos on here. i love getting this information, especially that i seem to miss the discussions every year at the shootouts. lets learn some more.
OK, and how dose Titanium Aluminide behave when it is on working temperature? Also so brittle?
+Ante Jakic Ductility increases with temperature, so I guess it won't shatter at nominal temperature.
What's the spread in weight?
2.5674²³⅝ gigahertz per kg photons.
I am Hypnotized. lol
can you make a video on the difference in evo turbos ? Mitsubishi EVO 6.5 RS TME vs Mitsubishi Evo 9 Stock Turbo vs Mitsubishi 20G Turbocharger
Fantastic information...i am even more happy my holset does not have those holes
Thanks for the video! Robert is full of great useful knowledge. Subscribed and ready for more! FP FTW!!
Turbins are what some people where on their head lol Just joking around Robert, love you educational videos. the more you know
wear
Also, Robert, please consider a shirt based microphone for better audio quality.
Nathan, you are correct, at least first time using it for video. We're much better at building turbos than we are at making videos about them :P
