    I think (correct me if I am wrong) this was addressed from a gas engine perspective due to surge when the throttle plate(s) close while the turbo is spooled. How is it different for a compression ignition engine that does not have a throttle?

    I'm shocked after all this time no one has called this out. Air DOES NOT flow through the surge port toward the impeller. It flows from the impeller through the slot and circulates back to the inlet. Look at any CFD analysis on the subject.

    • @chimpun1979
      @chimpun1979 ปีที่แล้ว

      The CFD engineer, scientist or user has to make the assumption(s) as to where the air will get into the turbo and set the boundary conditions. The assumption that the air is traveling through the impeller only may be correct or not correct. Therefore, testing is needed to confirm the path that the air will travel to the turbo. I "believe" that it goes through both, but the bulk of air goes through the impeller. However, the argument that more power is made on the slot than the hole type housing may not be significant. TESTING IS KING.

    • @pdvmotorsports
      @pdvmotorsports ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chimpun1979 This might be correct if it wasn't already a well studied and tested topic. I have 5 research papers in front of me based on CFD and gas test stand work. It's real clear what these ports do and there is a reason the technical reports all refer to them as recirculation or bypass ports, not surge ports. I'll call that that street name.

    Inconell is a brittle in the cold hammering but in the heat application its a flexible in the stress and tension

    Does anyone know what alloy the turbine wheels are made of? I am assuming it’s some type of inconel.

    Now please compare throttle response of each, it's what their actual purpose is. My chra is so savage I have to lift my foot off the gas pedal completely over speed bumps otherwise it gets into very uncomfortable driver induced oscillations.

    To be fair, test them at operating temperature.

  • @voltsoftruthBSbuster
    @voltsoftruthBSbuster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not use pure titanium, or 6al4v alloy, or grade 1 or grade 2 titanium, which are extremely ductile. I'm not saying Inconel is not a good alloy, it is, but this test is not fair, since Titanium Aluminide can be as much as 45% Aluminum so its as much as Aluminum as it is Titanium, hence it suffers from extremely low ductility, and is not a good representation of Titanium or typical Titanium alloy, which actually are very tough and have excellent flexibility and ductility.

    • @f1chtl
      @f1chtl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      TiAl is intermetallic and thus not comparable to Ti or Al alloys. it is used for creep resistance at higher temperatures, which both Ti and Al alloys do not offer. Also, pure Al is way more ductile than Ti because it has more independant slip planes, but this doesnt matter here because the TiAl does not have an Al matrix...

    These are impeller wheel , which is in front of the engine to take in air. The turbine does the opposite , it ecpells hot gasses

    • @califuturist
      @califuturist 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My question is: why do the gasses need to make a 90° turn in all turbos? Why isn’t a squirrel cage design used? Wouldn’t a 90° turn on the hot side conduct more heat?

    • @fastindy
      @fastindy ปีที่แล้ว

      These are the turbine wheels, the hot side. They have an inducer and exducer diameter just like the compressor wheel. Blade geometry and count is quite different for a compressor wheel.

      Yes, I am currently installing it in my car for that very reason. The switch to Inconel was for added durability when running extreme rotational speeds and temperatures. If you're not boosting the hell out of your car then there's no reason to worry.

      Grade 5 titanium which is basically a titanium mixed with other metals are harder and more durable than pure titanium. Titanium is really overated tbh.

    • @florin604
      @florin604 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ante Jakic Ductility increases with temperature, so I guess it won't shatter at nominal temperature.
