David Schnaufer with kids- Winterfest
มุมมอง 1.3K9 ปีที่แล้ว
Early 1990s Winterfest of Acoustic Music. David Schnaufer brought talented kids from his dulcimer workshop onstage in a great performance. Inspired me to make sure tradition of mountain dulcimer continues with younger generations. Two of these young people went on to win the National Championship at Winfield, Kansas. Lloyd Wright and Casey Miles. David was the first national champion on dulcimer.

I just had my first dulcimer lesson yesterday. My instrument came to me as a sad gift and I didn't want to waste it. But I am actually drawn to the way the dulcimer allows you to play chords and melodies at the same time in a fashion that's amenable to a simple music person, a person who is intimidated by six strings or eighty-eight keys. But you demonstrate that there's a lot of sophistication in the dulcimer. I'm going to have to bug my teacher about how I can play songs not written in D and how I can use the instrument as a songwriting tool.

I was sitting by a campfire two nights ago playing my dulcimer when a whippoorwill started singing along with me. I thought of this, how David listened to the birds and wrote this song in response to their calls. It was a "David" moment, reminding me again of his beautiful soul, and his enduring imprint on my life. Knowing him and studying with him changed me forever. I need to learn this medley before my hands and mind give out!

I was fortunate to meet her son Harry James Jr. while traveling in Texas. He told me about his mom (Louise Tobin) and how she discovered Frank Sinatra when he was just a waiter. It was a fantastic and cool meeting. He is now about 80 years old.
