I am based in Nashville and play a lot of styles like jazz, latin music, and gypsy jazz in addition to the more typical things the mandolin is known for. Wild Fiddler's Rag on mandolin
มุมมอง 4333 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here is a video I posted on Instagram earlier this week, and it was requested that I put it on TH-cam so it's easy to slow down and transcribe! This tune is called "Wild Fiddler's Rag." I played it in the 2006 Walnut Valley Mandolin Championship in Winfield, KS when I was 16 years old and won the contest (now the National Mandolin Championship). Originally a contest fiddle tune, this tune is pa...

Please do more mandola jazz videos!
Thank you Isaac, thats what im talkin about!! Your friend The Duke Beeler, tulsa time!!
Very nice. Thank you Isaac. With all those chord shifts, the action must be really low and strings light guaged, is that accurate to say?
Thanks for the comment. Strings are just mediums. Can’t remember what these were, but i typically use D’Addario or String Joy mediums. I do like my action on the lower side to help with articulation, but not too low so as to buzz. I do play pretty hard depending on the musical moment.
Wonderful sound, Isaac. Do you have any instructional materials/tips for mandola players?
I don’t have anything on mandola! My tip is that I just think about it like it’s a mandolin, but in a different key. So if you call a song in C, I think about playing in G and think about the chords as if they were numbers. 1 6m 2m 5 etc. 👍
YESSS THAT BLUEGRASS STRUMM now I don't hafta sound like just a fiddler who randomly picked up the mandolin and never plays
Awesome!
Two of the baddest, most efficient right hands in the game
My man! 🙌
Memories of Billy Bauer's (my dad) skill, musicianship, pure loveliness. 2:41
It has the punch of a Gibson L5 but with an underdone of a baritone guitar
Wow, very cool… a single string mandola…sounds great, and lovely playing.
Thank you!
Nice double time lines ! Reminds of Gonzalo Bergera style double time ! Very legato like
Thank you! I love his playing, so that’s a great compliment to me 🙏
@isaaceichermandolin You deserve all the compliments man ! I like you're modern approach to the genre and especially on the mandolin ! Makes me want to go out and buy one . Any recommendations on entry level mandolins that won't break the bank ?
Sir, you have a truly beautiful instrument. I had to Google the artist who made it. I am looking for the octave mandolin.
Thank you. I really love this mandolin, and I know it’s really special, even in the world of high-end, boutique mandolins. The builder is Michael Heiden. 🙏
bravo sir
Beautiful
Love it, The Duke Beeler in T-Town
Fantastic! I could listen to you play all day!
Thanks!!
This is first video I watched of playing jazz on mandolin and damn... This is so good
Wow thanks!
Sehr gut❤
what make of mandola is that? JOnathan Man?
Jim Triggs 🙌👍
Hi. Fellow musician here but Ive never really tried my hand at mandolin. Do you tend to use the standard tuning usually? I'm trying to wrap my head around your playing! I used to play violin, so would it be a little easier for me to get my foot in the door? My best... Ruby
Oh yeah, and you're incredible! I really enjoy your playing!
Totally! Standard tuning all the way. Take all that violin knowledge and go for it!
Sooo beautiful , one of my all time favorite Jango pieces. That mando has a ring to each and every note, a fantastic sounding instrument and of course it is because of the talent of its player. A pity the audience did not appreciate it fully enough to remain silent.
Thank you so much!
Holy Moses. Your playing is absolutely inspiring. So much story telling and beautiful little punchlines in your phrasing. You had me giggling and giddy and now I need to listen again. Subscribed and absolutely a fan.
Man, thank you so much! Comments like this make my day and motivate me to keep posting stuff online! Cheers
I’m a jazz guitar player who’s been playing since 1988 and around 2005 I got my first mandolin. At that point, I learned a little bit on it but didn’t pursue it much. In recent months, for some reason it’s all I want to play. I’m charting out all my scales and chord/arpeggio pairs that I like to use, and working out chromatic intervalic patterns that I like to use on it. Seeing you improvise at this level is really inspiring. I can definitely hear a lot of what you’re doing and really like it. I can’t wait to get there!
Stick with it! FYI I am leading my second mandolin retreat in Mexico in February. Check out the Mexico Mandolin Retreat!
This is simply lovely ! What a touch ! What a tone !
Thank you!
Very nice ❤
Awesome!
Perfect !
Eli's class man
Brilliant tips, I’ll be referring to this video for a while. Thank you!!
Thank you! Cheers
Honestly, probably my fave mandolin player on YT so far, regardless of genre. It's the tastefulness of it in combination with the skill, ya know?
Talk about a compliment! Seriously, thanks so much. Makes me want to keep putting up videos..! Cheers
I much prefer shrub capo because they are so versatile. You can move the rubber and leave strings open. So if you have two capos, the world's new oyster your feedback would be interesting on this using shrub cap, hours or even two cap hours
Hi! I have never used a capo on a mandolin!!
Sir, I need your help. I often struggle to choose the right version of a chord on particular. A chord has three versions - root, 1st inversion, 2nd inversion. So, on a particular note which one to be played? Please let me know. And one more thing, is there any rule that if I need to play a chord on particular note , I have to incorporate that note in the same position in the chord? Suppose - I am in the key of D . I need to play an Emin chord over an E note. Which inversion should I select for this? Please help me to understand this .
Thanks for your comment. It would be hard to give a detailed answer in this setting, but I can tell you that overtime you develop your go-to chord voicings based on the situation and style. Often times I play many voicings and move between them interchangeably. As for the Emin7 chord… play frets 7, 5, and 7 for the notes D, G, and E. Often times we put the 7th tone in the bass. Cheers!
@isaaceichermandolin Thank you so much Sir for the reply. I understood your point of view
Jimi loved that #9 chord.
Thank you for the concise explanation of the altered dominant sound. I’ve heard that term thrown around, but I haven’t heard it explained this plainly. I’ll have to practice that. I also like playing the whole-tone scale over an augmented chord (or sharp 11 chord). I learned about this from the Ray Brown Trio’s version of “Take The ‘A’ Train.” The first II chord is augmented, and Ray Brown plainly plays the whole-tone scale.
Хорошее объяснение! Good explanation! Thanx.
Hey Isaac, your teaching is very well presented. Many thanks from Victoria BC.
Hi Isaac. Thank you for the lesson! Could you share what spruce your top is made of on your Heiden? It is sublime.
Thanks for noticing! It is Engelmann spruce. It has so much sustain. Cheers
Ok, this is really awesome. Swingin' and singin'. I may have heard a mandolin in this role before, but I don't think so. And it really works!
Thanks so much!
Are you from Oklahoma?
Yes, I grew up outside Tulsa 👍
@@isaaceichermandolin nice, NW Arkansas here!
