S5E40 Head East Never Been Any Reason 1974
S5E40 Head East young man they said. The band Head east out of Illinois was formed in 1969 and their debut record in 1974 would end up being their best and biggest seller due to the lead single Never Been Any Reason. This song is somewhat new to me and I have no idea if it was on Classic Rock Radio or not. Chime in and tell me. In any event this has it all: Cowbell, double keyboard with massive solos and muliple harmonies. Dig deep and turn it to eleven today in The Rock Cave. #headeast #NeverBeenAnyreason #songoftheday #sotd #therockcave

    Eddie Money was practically unknown in the UK but we had a couple of prominent DJs and presenters that really pushed him. 'Love 'Take Me Home tonight' but 'I Wanna Go Back' is everything that was special about US rock/pop that was barely a thing in the UK, we got the odd crossover like Mr Mister or Survivor but nothing like what you had there. I just find this song ironic that 38 years later I still go back to 1986/1987 to of my favourite years in rock and always will be. The original is maybe a 7/10 but its that sax that brings it to another level for Eddie.

    Really appreciate this episode and bringing more attention to Madness. They are, without question, my favorite band. Just saw them perform in NYC (May, 2024) and it was a great show featuring songs that spanned their 40+ years. As you said, they are not an underappreciated band in the U.K. where they are treated like a national treasure. Their latest album, "C'est La Vie" knocked Taylor Swift out of the #1 spot. That's as much a community service as a testimony to their popularity. ;-) But, here in the U.S., they remain largely unknown which is such a shame. I want to pick you up on one thing. Categorizing Madness as a ska band does them a disservice. That is the equivalent of describing the Beatles as a "mop-top band that performs catchy pop tunes for teenage girls". Madness has evolved a lot in their 40 years to the point where if one only knew them from the mid-90's on, ska would not come to mind. There is no question that their ska/rocksteady songs have stood the test of time and, in the U.S., are still immensely popular and what most people associate with Madness. At their recent concert, they performed many with most in the crowd loving them and singing along (including me). I don't know how to classify Madness now. To me, they are like a more upbeat, fun version of the Moody Blues. I particularly appreciate the orchestral influences which, while they don't raise the songs into the progressive rock category, add so much depth. Mike Barson's percussive keyboard style and Lee Thompson's sax are probably what helps preserve the ska energy of Madness' earlier music. Consider "NW5", a song written about growing up in the North London area with postal code NW5: th-cam.com/video/qm0bSqgOxOI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wlPBWsVeuMUm3T3r Many of their songs have great lyrics with a poignant message. But, as Suggs once said, "we have a tendency to play with our clown noses on" which undermines people taking them seriously. "One Better Day" or "Johnny the Horse" are great examples of this. Both are written about the homeless, the latter about the unnecessary killing for fun of one homeless man. But, in both videos, the band's playfulness and, particularly the latter song, upbeat energy, detract from the poignancy of the song. One Better Day: th-cam.com/video/7Xwh1J6VQnI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gHV4n1tYpMZbLReE Johnny the Horse: th-cam.com/video/sZMW5Dibxyc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ylUytd76rxSrmoVQ I could go on, these songs are only the tip of the iceberg. I get that a lot of people only like the ska songs and many don't care for the newer Madness material. But, it is great material that should have a larger audience in the U.S. Edit: It just occurred to me after seeing your comment with the list of links to their earlier songs, that they could have stopped in the 90's as a mostly ska/rocksteady band and they had already produced enough great material to be stand the test of time as a great band. One could make a plausible argument that they are two different bands to a large number of fans, but I see their catalog as a natural evolution as opposed to a hard departure as, for example, the way the Bee Gees cut hard into disco from their original pop.

    • @therockcave
      @therockcave 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for commenting. You bring up a lot of valid points and I will definitely check some of those songs out. I think because they did not take off here in America they are stuck in the Ska label because that's how record stores organized them. (What's a record store? lol) My personal experience involves finding Divine Madness box set and going deep. So good. I so wanted to see them on this tour, couldn't make it happen.

    • @steveinhudsonvalley

      @@therockcave There you go, you have a subject for a future episode: "Modern Madness, the evolution of the nutty boys to nutty men"... or something like that. 🙂 It is totally understandable that they've not escaped their ska designation here. Not sure if that is a failure of their marketing people or maybe their music is just too often tied to their North London working class roots to resonate with Americans. I'm reluctant to narrow them down to one more contemporary album, but "The Liberty of Norton Folgate" is a great album, almost a concept album, that showcases the more modern state of Madness. th-cam.com/video/wKW2bWSU9_k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Uc2L51fuMwVXxtS9 As someone who appreciates their 2 Tone label days, you might particularly appreciate the track from that album "On the Town" featuring Rhoda Dakar from The Bodysnatchers. th-cam.com/video/hUUl4H1y14k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ISQlt5zkiA16MfIv

    I’m a massive Neil fan and knew that most of Harvest was recorded in Nashville but I didn’t know that Linda Ronstadt was at those sessions until now. Assuming it was recorded in ‘71, she would have had Frey, Henley, Leadon, and Meisner - embryonic Eagles - as her backing band at the time. Is there any evidence that any Eagles were in the studio that day? What an exciting fantasy for a 70s music fan! Incidentally, the London Symphony Orchestra parts were recorded in London.

    Great White, IMO, suffers from the hair band stigma. These guys are actually very good musicians (you rattled off some of their later band destinations), the best of which is the lead singer Jack Russell. Save All Your love is incredibly difficult with myriad key changes and one of my favorite songs let alone a favorite by GH. They have 6-8 really great songs if you add Once Bitten to the catalog, and as you noted a great "drop the windows and cruise around in the summer" type vibe. (Note, it's Dokken we disagree on, they are "meh" for me, but one of your favorites). th-cam.com/video/7ZrwysCjnnU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=p6kzU_gznKssJLWn

    I remember some interview with Scott where he explained that the name came from the old STP merch and he just loved the logo. He said anyone can go buy one of those they're everywhere. So I did. I bought it so one Day I could hit a show and perhaps have them sign it but after wearing it as my party had for like 5 years it was no longer in autograph condition. Oddly enough Our Lady Peace lined up to me at a bar, I explained the hat, and their guitarist said "We'll sign it." Cool guys as well. I still have that hat in the closet.

      Are you from the US? Frankie took part in a televised MTV new years show back then, where the guys from Duran Duran joined them onstage while singing Relax. Maybe that’s why you associate them with that song 😀

      I get it. Especially this record. Not for everyone, but hugely popular. I prefer Tunnel of Love myself. That said, the majority of the 80's were New Wave for me.
