Thank you Ralph. I have purchased your book and am using it everyday in my practice
The perfect fourths exercise is like magic, thank you so much for your videos!
Thanks for letting me know you like it
I feel terrible as I just thought Doc had passed on a while ago.. I’m blown away. Always loved Doc and Maynard. After Maynard had passed away, I had just taken for granted that Doc passed for whatever reason.. so glad I found this and I’m totally amazed!!
Amazing shape in contrast to my recent vintage impulse buy. I bought a 1951 Buescher 400 model 225 (pro jazz horn for its time made from 1949-1956) for $35 off of craigslist that was in rough shape abused by some kid i suppose with 1/2 dozen dents. I used penetrating oil to remove slides and gave it a good bath in rubbing alcohol and dawn dishwash and water. I wish the slides moved like yours. Although I'm a beginner level, i played notes up to C5. I had a local top player try it out and he said it sounds wonky at the moment. Maybe it would sound better with dents fixed etc. I found a napbirt natl assoc of brass instrument repair guy who for $400 would remove dents and go over it and align valves and if i wanted would remove lacquer to raw brass. He would need to get the slides moving easier too. I have original case but can't get rid of slightly undesirable musky smell but horn has no odor now. I guess ill fold my poker cards in this gamble and not spend the money to fix it since not sure what would turn out and thinking not worth the gamble. Anyone interested can let me know (Its 9/20/24 date of my post) and could get it cheap.
Maybe Ralph D or any older trumpet players might know.....i payed cornet but just a beginner. The bell on his trumpet looks small in diameter to me - could be wrong. There used to be old vintage trumpets called peashooters that were thought to help play or sustain notes in high range. I would think he is playing a state of the art modern made trumpet , but does it look like a pretty small diameter bell?
Yes. It is a state of the art trumpet he helped design. I believe he has to conserve air when he plays now. The bell is a little smaller.
Thx Ralph
Thanks for watching
The F'in GOAT... In 1995 my father lived in Nashville TN and took me to see a trumpet player (can't remember his name right now), and I remember he had such a cheesy vibrato and played a lot of "country jazz". My dad knew him personally and introduced me after the concert. He asked me who my favorite trumpet player was and I said, "Doc Severinsen". He then said, "Oh...Doc huh? He has no style and just is good at playing". I asked him, "isn't that a style in itself", and he said no. Again...This is coming from a pro flugel/trumpet player who I remember being so cheesy and not very good...Wish I could remember his name, but I'll never forget than cheesy vibrato
Nice playing! I'm proud to call you my Trumpet "Goomba" from the Northeast!
I appreciate that coming from a pro. I do what I can when it comes to jazz. I really like it but i no my limits. Thanks.
Thanks I would agree with your comment. Thanks
This is neat. I think the triplet vibrato should be written as sextuplets though going from G to Ab.
Absolutely phenomenal you know why he’s alive still from expanding those lungs he’s getting oxygen to all his vital organs that’s why he’s so young for 97 years of age I guess he was 95 when this concert was done phenomenal
To play that pure at age 95? Amazing!
The tonight Show with Johnny couldn't have been the same without Doc fronting that orchestra those were amazing times that will never come back never such beautiful years I was glued to that TV come 11:30pm I'm 70 years young now but it was fun and thrilling, RIP Carson, Doc have many years more!
good job
@@sammyjacksonofhollywood1245 Thank you. Glad you liked it.
Great find! Hope you get a chance to play it every now and then. The Olds horns have wonderful sound characteristics. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful, being able to play high notes with trumpet is already hard, especially at the part to arrange those notes as a tribute for your country, America. I hope you can do more things for America and other people with your skills of playing the trumpet instrument.
🐐
Wow!!! Thanks, Ralph God Bless America!!!
Enjoy the book. There is a lot of good information in the book. Let me no if you have any questions.
I was there. His last concert was August 27, 2022, not September 1.
Yes That is correct. The Concert was in August and not September.
Madone! Sweet lyrical playing here Ralph a-la Doc. Btw, was this near AC or Ocean City? That's my Italian family home turf. Ever notice all the best lead trumpet players are Italian...Conrad Gozzo, Al Porcino, Bill Castignino, Johnny Bello, Bill Catalano, Johnny Coppola, Johnny Audino, Bill Chase, Chet Ferretti, Lin Biviano, Vinnie Tanno, Tom DeLibrio, Nat Pavone, Vince DiMartino, Allen Vizzutti, Joe Giorgianni, Dan Fornero...the list goes on...
Hello. That was 40 miles from ocean city. That was one great list of trumpet players
Nice video Ralph, keep in mind as we get older, our reflexes slow down, sucks but...we try to stay on top of things. I'm looking at your record collection and are those reel-to-reel tapes along with the 33" and 45" LP's? That Clarinet book is a b!tch! Also, Bill Chase recommended to get some violin studies as well.
Thanks for writing. Your right about that reflex stuff. I do have some reel to reel. Keep in touch

Grazie per aver condiviso questa tua bellissima esperienza.🌈
Thank you to. Appreciate it.
just to say i played on a second hand 1970's olds super for a while and previously i also had an olds clarke terry; you could blister paint with that. the harmonics really sang. i remember now too i had a DEG custom which i believe in the first year was made on the olds tooling- i learnt that later and it explained why it was soo nice to play. (tuning bell model).
Thanks. Very interesting stuff. I appreciate it.
It's great to see the legendary Doc Severinsen playing! I wish one of his many friends with the means, would give him a well deserved tribute concert. I'm in trumpet heaven whenever I listen to any of his performances. His incredible, magnificent unique sound, artistry and virtuosity covers the whole spectrum of the instrument, with unmatched power and feeling. Doc, without a doubt, will always be considered one of the greatest trumpeters ever. His legacy as a musician, band leader, educator and entertainer will continue to inspire all generations to follow. He will always be my #1 trumpet idol.
My number one also. Thanks for the thoughts.
Awesome! How many years old then. 95 now and still Awesome ! 2024. Still qick and handsome, the music speaks for itself. Love you Doc!
One of the great ones
Hermoso concierto excelente músicos felicidades y bendiciones desde México
Thank you for sharing this overview of a remarkable event!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed iy
Cool interview. I would love to see those horns restored to their former glory
Yes. He is thinking about doing one of them
Thank you very much for the info. Just leaving about some of this stuff.
With the tuning bell you pull the bell out 1 inch and leave the tuning slide all the way in-per Mr. Schilke's instructions. That's the way I use my vintage B6L-B ala Chase and Lin Biviano (though Lin played a B1L-B-the L means tuning bell and the B for beryllium-copper bell)). Mr. Schilke also used to boast "the Martin-Committee was designed by a committee of one....ME!" The Holton MF Horn was based off of Maynard's 1954 large bore Martin-Committee model. Freddie Hubbard & Miles played the large bore version, Dizzy, Lee Morgan, Ernie Royal, Bob McCoy and Conte Candoli played the M bore version
Thank you for share 👍
Thanks for the video. Doesn't the printed page show the articulation as B T Ku, but you mentioned B T B? Does it matter if the 3rd articulation is B or Ku?
Thanks for writing. Yes it does matter that the last note is ku. The Ku gives you a new note without changing the embouchure or using the tongue. Keeps the lips vibrating. Added benefit is that after a period of time it helps you with the tu ku and tu ti ku articulations.
How did 40’s trumpets have move able finger rings but not the 60’s trumpets
That is an interesting question. I don't know. Could it be just because of the different models.
Awesome find!
Got lucky. Thanks.
great looking horn. that's a keeper Ralph. Enjoy
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
I think I will keep it for a while. Thanks for watching the video.
For sale ?
Ultimate find. Play it for us,please.
I'm not good at it but I love it.
Thanks for writing. You do not half to practice these lessons in the extreme high register. It is actually better to practice in your normal playing range.
Another good lesson thank you Ralph. I note mentioning tongue against the lower teeth and pushing against the lower lip are both elements of the Jerome Callett's TCE methodologies. With your tongue against the lower teeth when pushing out against the lower lip does your tongue get a bend over effect? It appears to me that there must be some amount of tongue ending up forward of the lower teeth and being between the upper and lower teeth, again all elements of the TCE style of embouchure. I think I have read where Jerry and Carmine did talk over trumpet playing between them. Did your time with Carmine include and talk on TCE?
Good stuff Ralph. Nick from Slidell.
Thank you. I will see you soon.
@@ralphdavella554
Thanks Ralph. I have just got the Caruso book and have been using it for warm ups range and endurance but it is really good to have it explained by someone who really knows how it should be used.
Thanks for texting.
I feel like I'm lifting a 500 pound weight just trying to get up to the first C above the staff. I can't fathom how people go past that and sound so effortless. I've been a brass player for three decades now (mostly low brass.)
If you really want to play up in that range you can. But you half to really want to do it for what ever reason. 99 percent of the time you are better off putting you time into practicing other things as you know. I will be putting my time into practicing other things myself in the future. Thank you for writing.
Doc 👍
Thanks Ralph. Great tips and advice
