Great Sand Dunes National Park: Climbing High Dune and Discovering Zapata Falls. CO Adventure Park 2
Join us on an unforgettable adventure to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in southern Colorado! 🌄 Home to the tallest sand dunes in North America, this unique natural wonder is nestled against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains and spans over 149,000 acres of diverse landscapes-including vast sand dunes, alpine forests, wetlands, and grasslands.
Our journey begins with a half-mile trek across the dry bed of Medano Creek, which typically flows from late April through June but was dry during our visit. This led us straight to the towering dunes, where we set our sights on Star Dune-tied with Hidden Dune as the tallest in North America at 741 feet from base to summit! 🏜️
After conquering the dunes and taking in the breathtaking panoramic views, we explored the Pinon Flats Campground. With 88 sites suitable for tents and RVs (up to 25 feet), it's the perfect spot for an overnight stay amidst nature-just be sure to check site descriptions for the best fit.
To cool off from the heat, we ventured to Zapata Falls, a hidden gem offering a serene retreat. The short hike to the falls involves wading through chilly, shallow waters, so water shoes or sandals are recommended. The refreshing cascade and the tranquil atmosphere make it a rewarding destination for those seeking a peaceful escape. 💦

    Strange rule about no water discharge on the ground in that campground? I guess a cold plunge in the creek could wash off the day and wake you up! You guys are hiking animals -- no hold back. Beautiful area. Thanks

      It is an odd rule to us, especially given the campgrounds are designed more for small RVs and tents that don't have indoor showers. It was actually in both campgrounds.... Our real issue is that there was no indication of this rule until we arrived. We would've prepared differently had we known in advance. I suppose it's a response to people not using appropriate soaps for outdoor showers. 😞 ~J

    Can the shark fin be relocated to the front of the roof closer to the windshield. I have a slide in truck camper and need the shark fin moved. Is there any special electrical connection that needs to be sourced, or is regular speaker wire or some other type of commonly available wire usable to make the length necessary? If the shark fin can't be relocated, what will happen to the truck functions (i.e. radio, gps, etc.) if the shark fin is removed altogether?

    • @MidlifeRovers
      @MidlifeRovers หลายเดือนก่อน

      As we mentioned in the video, we stopped where we did because of the special antenna cable and connectors. FWIW, our system has worked fine for over a year other than the GPS gets a little off on its location (typically when off-road). This said, we do not use satellite radio which is what I'd imagine would be impacted the most. ~J

    • @deanvandress4693
      @deanvandress4693 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MidlifeRovers ok thank you. I also don’t use satellite radio or the truck navigation, so, if there isn’t a harness or ability to splice in extra wire, I’ll probably just remove it and cap the hole. Nice video! That’s for the prompt response.

      @MidlifeRovers หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@deanvandress4693 NP... Remember, if you remove it you will lose your regular radio and GPS location. It's all in the sharkfin. Most slide-ins will go over the fin while installed. ~J

    • @MidlifeRovers
      @MidlifeRovers 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He estimated about $4000 total. It depends on the number of people on the plane, not necessarily how many are in your group. We ended up saving some on both trips because they had to go out to pick up some people when they dropped us off, as well as, two people wanted a quick trip when they picked us up. So, we ended up paying about $3200 in the end. Honestly, I would try to plan well in advance and try one of the other outfitters. The problem is that it is also hunting season, so the really good ones fill up quickly! ~A~

    Excellent walk through with honest evaluation of the performance and concerns of the topper. With the extra weight have you needed to re-gear your truck? What additional add ons would you have chosen? Do you feel satisfied with the solution to the seam leak? How has it held up since then? Thank you!

    • @MidlifeRovers

      Thanks! The topper itself is pretty light so no worries there, however the gear and build-out can impact the payload side of things. Our Rebel came with 3.92 gears so we are very happy with them while running 34s. We did add air bags to assist with our payload. As for the topper, no we wouldn't change anything. The seams and leaks seem to be holding back the weather fine now. But we are planning to reapply waterproofing this summer. ~J

    I run Geico and it was very simple. I didn't even have to talk to anyone, it was all done online. I added a $30K rider for addon equipment which is probably a little low but it was a comfortable middle ground between jacking up my premium and ensuring I have enough coverage. I look at labor as a lost cause when you're doing it yourself.

    We are in Colorado and use State Farm. When we got our AT Summit I called our agent and explained what the topper was. After sending photos of the interior and exterior of the Summit along with a copy of the invoice they said we were good to go. Our existing insurance policy covered the Summit as well. Our agent sent the information to the regional office to confirm this and said nothing extra was needed to cover it due to the fact it did not have both sleeping and cooking facilities. Even having a heater and sleeping it was covered. If it did have sleeping and cooking facilities they would have increased our premium a bit to cover it but since it only has sleeping it is covered under our existing policy. It seems like policy coverage can vary greatly from state to state! I guess in this instance it is better to keep the build simple or go for something registered originally as an RV if it is going to be a full build out. I hope you find some good coverage soon.

I then asked for an Owner's Manual (which should cover stuff like seam sealer) because I did not get one. I was told in a somewhat condescending manner that it is "so simple" they didn't figure anyone needed an Owner's Manual. SMH...@@MidlifeRovers

      There seems to be some inconvenience in their responses for the sealer. They told us they don't "typically" need to steal the atlas seams. But when they sent our replacement fabric they had clearly done so on it. We are adding both steam and fabric sealing to an annual "service". Keep in mind that while the fabric is advertised as "waterproof" it is not without some maintenance to keep it that way. ~J

    Have you guys tried looking into Hagerty? Not sure if they do truck/off-road side of things but I know they are good for modified cars.

      We mentioned them in the video. The truck isn't old enough for Hagerty. ~A~

    I had this nightmare when I built out my sprinter camper in Massachusetts. No one would cover it. When I moved to New Mexico, my local Progressive agent had no problem issuing an RV policy based on what I told him it’s worth. Go figure.

    Is it not an option to just put a blanket additional insurance rider? That’s what I did on my Jeep to cover additional parts and labor. It’s just a rider for an additional amount say $20k on top of the value of the vehicle?

    • @MidlifeRovers
      @MidlifeRovers 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Name your insurance company because none of them I talked to were open to it when I suggested that option. ~A~

      Well, I went through the process with Montgomery Insurance and, after many emails and questions, they said "we can't rush the coverage on such a vehicle". That's after I said look at our TH-cam channel to see what exactly we do with it. ~A~

      I'm not sure how to reply with pictures on TH-cam. If you DM us on Instagram (@midlife_rovers) I can for sure. I will say that we have heavily modified our hatch and tailgate seals. The factory hatch seal was okay, but let water in when opening.

    Just found your channel and really glad I did. I also have a travel channel focused largely on national parks. I can really see your channel explode once day. Great content. In the fall, myself and a few buddies are doing a trip to new Mexico and bandalier is on the list as well as a bunch of other sites. Anyways guys, I wish you much success on your future travels and growing the channel. You got yourself a new sub.

    Love the video and we just returned from our 85 day inaugural trip in our AT atlas/1500 Ram to Alaska. A few of your tweaks are things I’ve thought about- lightweight awning walls (I’d love screen), our spare tire and propane tank arm swings to passenger side so we have to remove tank and sit on ground next to heater which is on driver side. Thank you for info on truma heater hose reroute so we can get heat to area needed - technician made changes for us. We had an extensive interior build done but wish I had discovered your site first as I LOVE your wall storage. We also have solar and shore power for our 280 lithium battery but because we drive around so much, our alternative does the trick, however we’re still trying to figure out best zero breeze solutions should we decide we need and will make use of shore power plug. Planning for Newfoundland/Labrador for next adventure. Keep producing such informative and entertaining videos!

      Yes, the tweaks are never ending. We're glad you were able to implement the heat duct reroute as it made a huge difference for us. We have a Zero Breeze from our roof top days and haven't determined if we really want to lug it around as of yet. Thanks for watching and hope to see you out on the road. ~A~
