Talking from experience with a single mum who moved out of an abusive relationship to keep me and my sister (we were both adopted from different families) safe. In the long run, yes, leaving is the best thing you can do especially if you have support to help you. But leaving can also be the most dangerous time of a woman/man's life when they've been in an abusive situation, especially when you have to take children with you and have to involve them. When my mother moved out with us, she was working full time and doing a uni course, and he (my adopted father, now thankfully no longer my legal guardian) had cut her off entirely from their shared bank account which only he had the signature on. In turn that meant she had no access to money because they had put it all together. He took the car registration so that she couldn't drive to escape and repeatedly went into her work and tried to get her both fired and also expelled from her uni course, and accused her of abusing my sister and I. And what's more, to get back at her for leaving, he took my two teenage cousins into his care (due to them not being able to live with their parents) and he abused them to almost the extent of torture. And he wasn't doing it to them because he hated them, he was doing it because ALL he cared about was hurting my mum. More than he wanted custody, more than he wanted to hurt those teenage boys, more than he wanted anything else, his end goal was always to hurt her and to remain in control of every aspect of her life. To let her know that even though she wasn't living with him, he was still in power. More than anything, he was emotionally and mentally abusive. He had us so isolated out there (living out of town) and had many ways to make sure we would stay put like animals while he went out and OPENLY cheated on my mother because she was powerless to object for the sake of the kids. It's not only the physical aspect of the abuse that makes it a dangerous situation, and it takes absolute bravery and absolutely all of you to bring up the courage to leave, when that person is who you are literally dependant on. Leaving sooner than later is always the best option, because you become stuck in an abusive home or relationship, it's so easy to become brainwashed by the fear of what will happen if you leave, brainwashed by the belief that you can never survive without them.

That was rally a hard scene to watch it is really hard to live a abusive person I was married to one but he was abusive by words not physical hitter

The fact that this movie messed us up emotionally and got us stuck on this film and how the chemistry these two had was amazing I even imagined myself in this situation and let’s say it made me bawl my eyes out

The whole time on that boat he was her illusion and he helped her to keep going 😢 . This movie just made me love and hold on to my husband even more . I have no more words for what she went through, so I'm just gonna say Shailene Woodley was amazing and I love Sam so much!!! They really do look like them too!
