    I found concept very “odd”, even by sitcom standards. Though not knowing your baby daddy is the subject of many media. It always read as “gay” without being “gay” cause the 80s. Two men living together, bickering and raising a child? I was surprised there wasn’t so much jokes at that setup’s expense. Still enjoyed the show but I imagine if it was rebooted there would be A LOT of changes

    • @ralpheichenlaub7004
      @ralpheichenlaub7004 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There were a few jokes in that vein, but I think if was on in the 90s or 00s, the show would be riddled with those type of jokes followed by a "not that there's anything wrong with that" sentiment. The 80s was full of unconventional nuclear families and this fit the trend so well with 2 dads and a judge to fill in the parental roles.

  • @gallery7596

    Videotaping the series makes it now look very dated, and special effects done in that format can be especially unconvincing. Clearly "I Dream Of Jeannie" was one of the models they were drawing inspiration from, but these producers didn't seem to have the right touch for fantasy-situation comedy. They certainly had the right lead; Corinne was just about perfect (funny, charming, and appealing like a Barbara Eden). However, with regard to the also important role of the dad: Larry Hagman this guy was not. He had zero flair for comedy, and if the show had continued I think they might have pulled a Darren and re-cast him with another actor. But, unfortunately, a lengthier run was not in the cards, and that's a shame as this could've been a really fun series that might've lead to the kind of roles Corinne deserved.

    • @VaultMasterDBT
      @VaultMasterDBT 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Franc Luz, who played the dad, primarily had a background in daytime soaps and nighttime drama series. He did, however, play the dentist in the original off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, so perhaps the producers of "Free Spirit" felt he could do comedy based on that. He wasn't even the first actor cast in the father role on this series, though. Christopher Rich played him in an unaired pilot, and I felt that he worked better opposite Corinne Bohrer. You can see clips from the Rich pilot here at 16:03: th-cam.com/video/KnzwzvPcLZ0/w-d-xo.html

    I've been watching this show on Tubi since I barely remembered watching it as a kid. I had seen it to where I recognized Stacey Keenan when "Step By Step" started, but I couldn't remember a single episode. Just knew it was Paul Reiser from "Mad About You" as one of the dads, knew what the other dad looked like, knew her, the theme song, and I could remember the weird loft apartment. The show isn't bad. It's also referenced in an early episode (maybe the pilot) of "Full House." They actually did have a paternity test done in the first couple of episodes, but the results were inconclusive as to who was the father. What you do with a paternity test is test markers of the child's DNA vs. the mother's vs. prospective father or fathers. It can be inconclusive if it is in the range of above zero to less than 99% match. How this happens is typically the child has had a DNA mutation that won't show up in the mother or father's DNA. So, you can't 100% guarantee that the child is fathered by the prospective father. It's rare to see that, but it does happen. Or the real father wasn't either of them. Honestly though, I think her mother was really weird to have her child raised by two men that she obviously cheated on one or the other and broke up their friendship. That's a big gamble to take. She also assumed neither were married with their own families? It's very strange as a concept. Nowadays, it would be easy. You would have one father who had come out of the closet by the time he's awarded custody, so she would have two dads, which isn't even much of a concept since gay couples have kids now, so it wouldn't even be interesting enough to put on TV.

    • @ralpheichenlaub7004
      @ralpheichenlaub7004 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @luckdragongirl it was a unique concept. I think the paternity test episode revealed that only the judge knew the truth. But I loved how Nicole never cared about the results and proclaimed they are both her father. No questions asked

    I heard on another TH-camr's channel why this show was cancelled. It was part of TGIF, and ABC signed a deal with Miller-Boyett productions to have the entire TGIF block be their shows. Just the Ten of Us was not produced by them, and I can't remember if they tried to move it and it did poorly in the new day/time slot or if they couldn't find a day/time slot and just cancelled it. While I do love the Miller-Boyett sitcoms, that deal didn't last forever because Boy Meets World was not one of their shows and became a staple of TGIF (and my all-time favorite TGIF show) as well as another staple (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) that wasn't their show joined TGIF. If they hadn't signed that deal, it would have been great. Just the Ten of Us probably would have lasted at least one more season. It also sucks that this show hasn't been digitalized to be presented on any streaming platform or released on DVD. I did buy a DVD set from a guy who transferred taped versions from USA Network, but the quality isn't great. It definitely reminds me of my childhood watching shows I had taped on VHS. I just wish it would get a real DVD release.

    The show deserved more than one season. Should've lasted at least four. If the timeslot was an issue, they could've brought it back to Saturday morning, airing it back to back with SBTB: The New Class. I liked the idea of taking the characters we were familiar with, and dropping them into a newer, more mature setting and dropping all the campiness of the original series. It was Saved By The Bell, with a 90's edge to it, and it actually worked. Zack finally began to realize that all of his clever little high school tricks and schemes wouldn't help him in the real world, so he and his friends had to actually start growing as characters. It's ironic that the good series gets axed after one season, but The New Class got seven seasons of hot garbage.The fact that The New Class couldn't hold on to any of their cast members (outside of Belding and Screech) for more than a season or two tells you everything you need to know. The College Years was an underrated gem.

    • @ralpheichenlaub7004

      @GarimusPrime83 I'm curious if the cast/creators thought it would last longer. And what material they would have delved into. • @GarimusPrime83

      @@ralpheichenlaub7004 Don't even bother with The New Class. The first season kids were carbon copy knockoffs of Zack, Slater, Screech, etc. They were so terrible, that they were all dropped before season 2 beings. Then, they decided to just take all the newer kids and drop them into the same situations as the original cast. It's terrible. Screech and Belding are still there, but they're both turned into cartoonish comedy relief. All the kids are there one season, and gone the next, with no explanation. It's the most watered down series I've ever watched. At least the original cast had charm. The newbies had nothing going for them.

    Honestly, I liked Saved by the Bell: The College Years BETTER than the original. I kinda wish they'd kept an ethnic female for one of the girls instead of all three being...unseasoned(I mean it was the early 90s!!). I'm glad they got rid of the muscle dude Mike and brought in Holland Taylor. Screech should've kept a steady girlfriend or they should've just paired him off with Leslie who ended up kinda pointless once Zack started to pursue Kelly. Overall, I think it would've lasted longer in a better timeslot...and maybe they could've taken "Saved by the Bell" out of the title.

    • @nancyhey1012
      @nancyhey1012 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s an idea 💡 they could have paired Screech with Leslie, I don’t know why they didn’t think of that instead of just having him have the one episode romance with Linda. Leslie seemed like the type who wasn’t put off by Screech’s goofy and nerdy style, so they could have worked out well as a couple.
