Welcome to R&D!
R&D is a TH-cam channel that explores the inner workings of the fashion apparel business from a behind-the-scenes perspective. Each episode features a new industry professional, or as we like to call them, a true craftsman, and examines their role in the fascinating process of making garments.
With over 40 years of combined experience, Rose and Dana come with a passion for sharing who and what they know. As the push for transparency within fashion continues, we’re proud to provide an honest, insider look at what really goes into making a garment. This show looks great! Is it in NY or LA?
They host shows in both NY and LA. This video showcases the show in LA.
So cool!
It's a great show for the fashion industry. Cannot wait to visit the show in LA ❤~!
Same here😏
Obviously a lot of thought goes into the planning AND development of new fabrics. I personally like the selection of more natural fibers I'm seeing when I shop, and I think the Preface show is great way to inform and introduce them to the market.
Pigment tracing…that’s awesome!!!
Impressive! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Super rad textiles!
I’m not an expert on the subject but I do know something about it. Are you sure he is correct? It’s usually the opposite of what he says. The organic fabrics are the ones that are usually eaten away and it’s the synthetic fabric is the one that is left behind. So for the first fabric, it would usually by the black part that is the silk. Are there different types of agents that react differently to different materials for burnouts?
Hi Josefk5659, thank you for your comment. Yes, we are 100% sure he is correct. David Park has been in the silk business for 30+ years. Do not think of the fibers as "organic" and synthetic" because that is not the reason a burnout works. The reason a burnout works is because the chemical reacts and dissolves the cellulose fiber (rayon), leaving only the protein fiber (silk) behind.
@@danabilhimer interesting. Thank you for your thoughtful response. I was only aware of agents that ate cotton and silk before.
Paper…it’s amazing how much paper plays a role in making garments, crazy!!!
Even more, this paper can last up to 10 years if handled carefully.
Very interesting 👍
We agree! Let us know what you want to see next.
So interesting to see the complexity in making beautiful fabric!
Thank you! The true talent is in the execution. It's not easy to set up these patterns to ensure the fabric fits in every corner.
Shopping second hand is where it's at! I've been doing this for over 20 years! Didn't realize all the varioud positive impacts on the environment by doing so. Very cool, thanks RDLA!
We LOVE to hear this! Spread the word and THANK YOU for watching :)
Everyone who wears clothes should watch this! I'm blown away by the number of steps and the skill and art that goes into making these beautiful fabrics. Question, if I may - I'm so curious about what the guy in the raw material selection process is doing with the scissors/sweater - any possibility you could tell me a little more about what's going on there? THANKS for these great videos!
Great question @Visickle! He is removing all the trims, buttons, zippers, labels, etc. so that the sweater is ready to go on to the next step...shredding! If any of the trims are left on, it could damage the shredding machine.
@@RDLA-US how cool - and what a process. thank you for replying!
Wow, amazing! Those machines are incredible
So greige is all fabrics in it’s unfinished state before the final fabric handfeel/look? Crazy to see the process of how fabric is made?
I mean “made!” Not “made?”
Correct. It is the state when it comes off the looms. There are all types of finishes that can be applied to change the characteristic of the fabric.
Super interesting and informative! Nice video!
Amazing tour! We love Massimo
Thanks for watching! We love Massimo too 💚
Fantastic video! Thanks RDLA! Massimo “Max” Barili is awesome!
We couldn't agree more! Massimo è il migliore!
Dang, just opened Pandora’s box. The processing is amazing! Really makes me appreciate the beauty and complexity that goes into even the most basic textile. So cool!!!
So glad you enjoyed the video!! The textile process is insane to say the least. Sooooo many steps AND soooo many hands (people)!! Most people have no idea. Spread the word, share the channel 💕
Thanks for this video! I would like to see you doing some videos on Sustainabile textile /apparel companies and how they excercise sustainability within their business models. Cheers!
Thank you for the suggestion! We will consider this in the future. We do believe in supporting companies that work with a sustainable mindset. Digital printing also checks the more sustainable box. You use only the ink you need.
Beautiful prints! Interesting to watch how it’s done.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Seterie Argenti sells their prints to so many brands from around the globe, you've probably seen them in the stores ;)
